Sounds like a beagle to me. Went from a Lab previously, one of the most outgoing breeds, and thought I had a broken dog. Nope, they just have an insane sense of smell and food is central to who they are. Being in the room with you is all they really want.

As to tripping in the kitchen, this gate has been a lifesaver.

We have these and they're the best.

As far as being "top of the stairs compliant" that's more up to the layout of your stairs. In order to be compliant, the gate has to be able to be screwed into the wall, which this gate and many gates do, but you have to have the correct layout of your staircase to do that.

I highly recommend the type of gate that stays mounted, but has a latch that lets it swing open.

Srsly. We have one of each type strategically placed in our home, and if you know it's gonna generally stay in that one spot, this is the way to go. I almost broke my ankle tripping over the other one, because I was carrying my kid and too lazy to take it down.

Do the big stuff now, like tying/bolting furniture to the wall (example), mounting your TV (example), etc. just so you don't have to bother with it later. However, add the other baby-proofing items as you need them. You don't need gates right now unless you're trying to keep dogs or other kids out of a room. You definitely don't want the misfortune of tripping over a gate at 3am with your screaming newborn who has no use for a gate. When you do get gates, splurge for the ones with a swing open door (example), as opposed to the ones you have to step over(example of what you DON'T WANT). Definitely worth the extra money.

When your baby starts getting more mobile (around 6+ months), babyproof the main room you guys spend time in REALLY WELL. It doesn't have to be pretty, just effective. This way you can all relax in the room together instead of spending the whole time keeping your baby off of furniture/away from cords.

As for other rooms, consider whether or not you can move items to a more safe/secure place as opposed to just locking a drawer. For example, maybe instead of keeping a bunch of cleaners chemicals under the sinks in the bathroom and kitchen and laundry room, you move all of them to one central location (like a closet) that is securely child-proofed. Then you're not constantly fiddling with the child-locks on every cabinet, just one closet.

Just get the clamping kind. You don't have to screw in anything. We have three of these in our house. I've added them twice (first kid, second kid). They hold up great and don't require any screwing. I didn't install the wall cups.

This was $32. The gaps were too wide for our small breed puppy (7lbs at the time) though. Also consider buying used through Amazon, it's just a gate after all!

There are gates with relatively easy pass through so you don’t have to climb over them.

Are you able to install baby locks on your cupboards? We have a cat that liked opening up drawers and we just didn't like that for sanitation of our dishes, so we got baby locks. There are the kind that can lock doors together like this or this, and there are kinds that go inside the cabinet if your door doesn't have knobs/handles like this. We have the inside kind and it's definitely helped. As for your fridge, you might just have to take off any magnets and things and find another place for them if you can't deter her from leaving things alone.

Edit: Also, if you're looking for a baby gate of sorts, we used one similar to this while training and pet-sitting. We still have it for our cat room to keep the dogs out of the food/litter and the cats are small enough to squeeze through the bars or they'll jump. It's fairly cheap for not needing to screw it into the wall, and the door is nice for not having to take it down or step over it whenever you want to use the kitchen.

Why put a lot into it when it’s only temporary, just use this, I have one and it works great. Just put a 2x4 on one side if you need to for it to fit properly.

I actually have 2 in my house. Good price, fairly sturdy if you do the temporary install (instead of screwing it to the wall, it uses rubber boots and tension rods). I give it 4 stars lol.

u/hellorubydoo · 2 pointsr/beyondthebump

I got gates off amazon that have a cat door on the bottom. My cats refuse to jump gates so this was the only option. My baby isn’t due until April, but it works well for keeping dogs out of room cats can go in haha

I have these ones! They are easy to use one handed.

Whoops! Sorry we bought ours as a set but I can't find the exact one (we bought it at babies r us when it was open) but it's one like this. Didn't actually drill in just tension screws.

When we first started letting Alphonse out of his kennel in his room while we were gone, we put up a puppy gate like this one. We installed it the simple way, with the pressure pads that tighten against the door frame.

Our precious, 14-lb doggo knocked the damn thing down (twice). I'm still not 100% sure how, because just a normal nudge from me wouldn't budge it. He had to have been running at it full speed.

So now it's hardwired - fully mounted & screwed into the door frame.

u/ItsACharlieDay · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I want this gate for my dog. One, because the one now isn't good enough for his size and two (the main reason) is so my mom doesn't have to constantly try and lift her leg over the gate or trip over the dog/gate.

I wish I remembered the brand that we have. I think it might be a Regalo, because it looks a lot like this, but with a little cat door at the bottom.

The one piece of advice I would give is absolutely do no buy one like this. Those little holes will become footholds for a little one to climb over. Everyone I've known who has gotten something like that has had to replace it as soon as their child figured out how easy they are to climb. Stick with the vertical slats only - no horizontal bars except at the top and bottom.

u/goldfish_king · 1 pointr/dogs

I have this gate. It's 31" tall and adjustable width. I also live in an apartment, and it can be pressure mounted. I found it worked very well, and it's not expensive at all.

Theoretically a dog could body-slam it down I suppose, but I have a hard time imagining a 40-pound dog doing it without hurting itself.

u/thespottedbunny · 1 pointr/beyondthebump

For the gate, we have this baby gate: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001OC5UMQ/

It comes with these plastic discs that you screw into the wall. Then, the round pressure mounted anchors sit inside those discs. The discs keep the mounts from moving. My 13 month old can (and does) shake it like crazy and it doesn't move.

Here is what I got off of Amazon and I have been very happy.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001OC5UMQ

I did have to attach a board over one of the two just because the gap was a bit more than desired and the smaller of my two buns could get through it. The other gate she can not get through, since the door gap is smaller.

u/kitty_hampsted · 1 pointr/puppy101

We put a tall baby gate in our laundry room (6x10 feet). His crate is there if he wants it, water, and then some chew toys. I've also seen people recommend getting a cat box and filling it with sod or whatever your puppy potties on if they have accidents in this space.

Just be mindful of which gate you use, he learned how to climb the first one in two days. We've had these for a couple months and they keep home pretty well contained. Best of luck!

u/BKMD44 · 1 pointr/AskReddit

Just got this gate, it's awesome, my dog can't jump over it, it has a door with a latch that you can use to walk through (no more climbing over) and it's sturdy. He doesn't even try to get through it anymore!

u/KillerSiren · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

This would be nice but if its too pricey our pup already has his own wishlist

As for training I see a ton of great advice here (some of which I'm stealing) but don't forget to have fun and be patient. My personal thing I do is, I make a clicking sound with my mouth when he is doing something wrong. Its not a loud sound but after some time if used properly your little pup will know the clicking is his version of "no no" to a child.

My dog is an older rescue so he is a little set in his ways but he is lovable anyway.

Congrats on your fuzzy child 😃

We used these. It's a compression fit. Our little one likes to pull and try to climb it, but so far it hasn't budged. I've even ran into it in the night and it didn't move. (I'm a pretty big dude) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001OC5UMQ/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_i_8zbYDbF7B2JB3

Few other things I found while digging in my Amazon orders:

u/Muttly2001 · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Was going to suggest this but you mentioned it swings so I assume that is kinda what you use.

u/couper · 1 pointr/puppy101

Does your baby gate have horizontal bars? Our pup learned really early on to climb out of his x-pen by sticking his feet on the horizontal bars, climbing to the top, then jumping off. It was really scary, one time he got his foot caught and was dangling upside down. Luckily we were at home, but I crated him from then on.

Now he's older and roams more, we use baby gates that only have vertical bars so he can't climb out. There are what we have: https://www.amazon.com/Regalo-Easy-White-spaces-between/dp/B001OC5UMQ/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1469486747&sr=1-1&keywords=baby+gate. You have to make sure though that the vertical bars aren't wide enough for your pup to fit though.

u/squeamish · 1 pointr/Showerthoughts

Why do people still have those goddamn scissor-like wooden ones? It can't be worth saving $20 to have to fool with unhinging that thing every time you need to go into another room. Get a damn swinging gate.
