If you like platformers or retro/pixel style games I'd recommend you pick one up. Or better yet, grab one of these baddies.. you can definitely find them cheaper than the one I linked here, and there are lots of great NES and SNES games that stand the test of time. I mean emulators are great too, and nostalgia is certainly a factor for me, but old games can provide a cool throwback gaming experience, and offer a sort of window into gaming history.

Not only Japan, the Retro Duo console is a thing. I happen to work at a place that sells this and the two consoles OP mentioned.

If you're solely interested in NES/SNES I recommend this. You could also look into getting flash carts to play most roms on original hardware. Also I recommend playing original hardware on a CRT, because most modern TVs introduce lag when up-scaling NES's 240p up to 1080p, resulting in floaty inaccurate controls. If you see at least a few Wii U games you think are interesting, which I think there are tons, you should buy a Wii U.

Gimme some Tech Daddi!

If I had to pick, I have this on my wishlist because I miss all my old games. I still have my SNES from when I was younger but it doesn't work anymore. I got it for Christmas so every time it starts to get even a little chilly I want to curl up in a blanket and play so badly and it's killing me that I can't. Super mario world is my favorite game and I have a lot of happy memories attached to it, mainly being that it was the only time during my entire childhood I ever got along with my sister. We hated each other growing up, still don't really get along, but super mario world always tickles me and makes me happy because I had such a great time with it. I wanna be able to feel like a kid, and smile. Not a lot makes me happy but being able to play my old games this winter would. Plus it would be fun to be able to play with my son.

Sorry that sounds so mushy/sentimental, haha.

Something like this.

I don't know much about brands or how they perform.

I know this is not exactly an answer to the question you asked, but check this shit out.

Here is the emulator I used for a while. Some folks complained about a smell of melting plastic from this model but I never had that issue.

Works great!
