The big deal is that it's supposed to be a book about a world in which black people are dominant and whites are oppressed, yet black people get called "coals" and white people inexplicably get called "pearls".

The bit about a black guy being called a "beast-man" is very much a big deal, because it's the kind of description that was used to justify slavery way back in the day. Even now, if you look at white supremacist propaganda, you see black people being compared to apes and monkeys and such. It's a very sore point.

Finally, read the first page or two on Amazon. The writing is atrocious. It reads as badly as Atlanta Nights.
