That list did not include the University where I took a Beatles class. I wonder how many more they missed?

Our syllabus was three books - a general history of Rock & Roll, a history of The Beatles, and a song by song analysis (Revolution In The Head), plus listening to recordings of all the Beatles records and the first round of solo albums. We had assigned readings and discussed the albums in chronological order. Great class!

Binge on whichever ones you are attracted to, for whatever reason. Then when you want to get systematic, read this book:

Revolution in the Head

Every so often as you go through the book, you'll feel an uncontrollable urge to listen to whatever songs he's discussing. So stop reading and do that. Then continue with the book.

Good morning, good morning, good mornin-guh.

My best recommendation:

Step 1: Order this book:
http://www.amazon.com/Revolution-Head-Beatles-Records-Sixties/dp/1556527330

Step 2: Make sure you have access too the complete Beatles discography including the two volumes of "Past Masters" single compilations.

Step 3: Clear a Saturday, maybe a whole weekend, of all other plans.

Step 4: Find a comfy chair, a good set of headphones, and fill the fridge with beer and food.

Step 5: For each song mentioned in the book, in that order, play it before you read about it, then read about the song, then listen to it again.

If you're not a fan after this, you probably never will be (and that's ok), but at least you will know more about The Beatles and their songs than most people.

Enjoy!

Edit: fixed typo.

Edit 2: To answer your question more directly, what makes The Beatles still stand out today is not only their ground breaking experimentation, ever-changing style, and the astounding number of songs they managed to put out in less than 8 years, but, at least in my book, two main things about those songs:

  1. With two, later proving to be three, very talented songwriters in the group, they wrote an overwhelming majority of the songs themselves. This is of course not very common in modern music, where most artists have songwriters, producers and professional musicians doing most of the work for them.

  2. Compared to the song catalogues of most other artists, I dare say The Beatles have an unusually large portion of songs that are extremely catchy - catchy enough for most people, not only fans, to be able to hum along to them after a very limited number of listens - while for the most part still maintaining a decent level of musical sophistication.

    Hope this helps!
