It is older, but Rise of Nations is a fantastic empire-building RTS. Think of it as Age of Empires with even more eras (think pikemen vs. tanks). I don't think it is available digitally but disc copies are still easy to find (here is a copy that includes the expansion).
Yeah, I lost my cd so I havent played it in a couple years or so. but in America, you can grab it for $10 from Walmart or something. its an awesome game, you start off in the dark ages (or bronze age, I cant remember) and move all the way up to the present/near future age with nukes and submarines and stuff. Its really fun and fast-paced. If you've got the time and money, give it a shot

Amazon does take Visa gift cards and AmEx giftcards. You just need to make sure that whatever card you buy can be registered online with a name and address(AmEx for sure does this, but do some research because it's been a while since I've done this). It's $7.69 on Amazon, including the expansion. What hardware do you have? It should run on any relatively modern system, except those with Intel graphics cards. Tool tips don't display correctly with Intel cards, making it extremely hard to tell which icon does what, though the game was still playable on Windows 7 64bit.
