The Risen Empire and The Killing of Worlds (the two parts of the Succession series, also both published as one booked titled The Risen Empire) by Scott Westerfield. Hard space scifi which I really enjoyed and wish the author would add more books to the series/universe.

SF doesn't get much harder than The Martian by Andy Weir. It's about an astronaut's efforts to survive while stranded on Mars after a failed mission. All the science is plausible.

I can also recommend The Risen Empire duology by Scott Westerfield for realistic space battles.

Anything by Asimov, Niven, etc..

I enjoyed the Star wars novels, but haven't read any of those since high school.

Neil Gaiman writes some neat stuff, but I'm unsure of whether it qualifies as sci-fi.

Also, most people who love sci-fi, or who are English, tend to enjoy the writings by Terry Pratchett.
