I wear summer gloves, and use a parasol and wear long pants and shirts in the sun. I got a pair of thick cotton gloves that I wear during driving, as well as arm sleeves that are UPF 50. I have a great indicator of sun blocking power because if sun gets through, I get an awful rash. Here are a few things I've found that work well:

• Underarmour UPF 50 shirt very lightweight and stretchy, I wear it running in 80 degree weather and it does fine.
  
• Athleta indicates on their tag anything that has a UPF of 30 or greater. Their summer pants are awesome.
  
• Linen doesn't have a very high UPF but you can wash with Sun Guard. Lasts for 15 washes!
  *For hands, I use a mineral sunscreen like vanicream. It seems to last longer than chemical sunscreens, and I wash my hands a lot as well. You can also use something like Eucerin after washing hands.

If you're going to be outside all day in strong UV it's absolutely required. I live in Australia and in the summer I stay out of the sun in the middle of the day and afternoon completely if I can help it.

You can actually buy a laundry treatment that can build up the UPF rating of your clothes if you want extra protection too.

And make sure not to rely on sunscreen alone! Sunscreen has to be reapplied in good quantity on a regular basis. It’s good to wear long sleeves and a hat, as well, preferably in fabrics with UPF.
Examples of UPF clothing lines are Coolibar and Mott 50. . Places like Dicks Sporting Goods also carry sun protective clothing.
You can also use something like Rit Sun Guard to treat your clothes and give yourself extra sun protection for up to 20 washes.

You might also consider investing in a sun blanket or an umbrella with UPF as well.

Stay in the shade and avoid direct sunlight. Photosensitive lupus patients are supposed to avoid going outside in the sun between 10 AM and 3 PM, as that is when the sun is strongest.

Have you tried UV laundry additive? You add it to your wash and it adds sunscreen to your clothes. My friend's mom is allergic to the sun and it lets her wear normal clothes outside.

Please consider investing in some good pieces of UV protective clothing. They can be more expensive than regular clothes, but I think you definitely need them. Coolibar and Solumbra are good bets. Invest in a good UV protective hat (or several). Wear sunglasses if possible. Do not neglect the back of your neck (which is where skin cancer appears a lot of the time) and your hands. Both Coolibar and Solumbra offer sun protective gloves. I know another redditor also once mentioned Tilley. If there are other pieces of clothing you have that you cannot replace with UV protective clothing, try out SunGuard. (Keep in mind it gives you less sun protection than dedicated UV protective clothing, however.)

As for sunscreen, higher SPF is definitely better. Though the difference, some argue, is minimal, your skin cares about the rays that get in, not the ones that don't. The most important thing to remember with sunscreen is that you must reapply every two hours because sunscreen loses its effectiveness, even if it is a higher SPF sunscreen. Also, remember to protect your lips with a chapstick that has UV protection, and apply sunscreen to the back of your ears.
