I grew some Somango XXL last year with LEDs. Used this for veg and this along with the first one for flower. All Fox Farm soil and nutrients and only distilled water. I topped it a little late (at 8 nodes), but that thing was huge by the time it was ready to harvest. I was scared it was gonna outgrow my tent (3x3x6), but some trellis netting fixed that. It came out great, but the buds weren't as tight as I had hoped...probably because I didn't keep the lights close enough during flowering and neither of these LEDs have a solid red spectrum. Either way, I got almost 7 zips, and that's pretty nice for a first effort. Made my $ back plus more and still had plenty for myself. All that stuff about the old LEDs kinda scared me, but they've definitely come a long way. There's a smaller version of the one I linked in my first post, so that might be my next investment. The heat and electricity usage of MH and HPS kinda scares me. The setup I used only made my electric bill go up by about $30 a month on average, and of course the more expensive months were during flowering when I had a bunch of fans going including the HVAC exhaust that was connected to a carbon can inside the tent. You could put your face up to the exhaust hose and there was no smell at all, so that was good. How's your electric bill with that HPS? I'm trying to weigh the long term cost of HPS vs. that expensive LED.

I just bought this light and it is the best light I have owned but it's more expensive and not what I started out with.

For someone starting out I would get something like this which is 300 true watts or this which is around 260 true watts. Both are going to make your closet hotter so you may have to get an intake/exhaust fan but they will give you 10x better yield. I have grown with both of them.

I also have a few of these which will still be way better than what you have currently however these blurple lights get a lot of flack from people and weren't my personal favorite. But for $59 right now on Amazon that's a pretty good deal for 165 true watts.

Here's my first grow doing what you are doing

Here's my second grow using the lights I suggested

Edit: If you think you are going to get into growing and take it serious in the future get the light I linked first. It was around $150 after shipping and it takes some diy to put together but it will run way cooler than the other lights and is 15x better than any of the Amazon lights for $50-$100 more. If I could go back and do it again I would get rid of all the Amazon lights and spend the money on some nice quantum boards.

Its not just a single LED, if your brave: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00INM0750/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Its an array of LEDs for plant growth, full spectrum + IR

It is 7,000 lumen though, so it is bright, and because of the IR/etc I have to wear special glasses otherwise it fucks up my eyesight (and is bad for your eyes like looking at the sun)

Looks interesting and simple enough. I could start a few seedlings and have that going in short order. I have a 300w LED Grow Light, it's the type where the light is very pink. It's similar to this one (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00INM0750) Would that be an ok light for a few plants or should I spend money on a better one?

u/Nascent1 · 2 pointsr/Nanoleaf

Haha yeah. But a decent LED grow panel like this pulls about 130 watts. Each triangle Aurora panel pulls 2 watts when it's white and max brightness. From an energy standpoint you'd need 65 panels. Plus the light is diffused and white light is not optimal. You'd probably need like 100 panels.

If you're in a new development you should be fine. If you were in one of those pre war apartment buildings then you should be concerned.

Another note, I would check you lease to make sure you can have something like that in your apt. If you can have a fish tank you are probably fine, but your lease might say you are not allowed to have a fish tank. My current lease in DC says that.

Edit: As for you question. These were the lights I had saved for my project. You would hoist these lights. There is a kit on that page for doing exactly that. As the plants grow you hoist them higher and higher over the plants.

2x https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005KMTYFK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 : One on bottom for intake, one on top for exhaust.

2x https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00INM0750/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 : This MAY be a little too much. There have been a few times where I thought I was getting light burn symptoms, but I just kept moving the light closer to the top of the tent (an inch or two off the roof now)

Other than that its FoxFarms Ocean Forest soil and HyrdoOrganics nutrients. I got the whole line but don't necessarily follow their schedule, I just use things as deficiencies pop up.

I have gotten that red streak in most of the grows I have done. I think is high in phosphate? It's been a while since I have read much into it but I believe as long as the whole stem isn't red, things should be fine. I know the plant turning purple is genetic, but it also depends on temperatures. My tent gets a little cool at night so that may have something to do with it too?

You could get 2 of these or 2 of these i have the cob lights and they are a great value in my opinion. And the manufactuer has great customer service. Just a smidge over your budget for lights but 2 of those should cover a 3x3 tent. And a 3x3 tent shouldnt cost you $150.

u/theOriginalBenezuela · 1 pointr/microgrowery

No. I'm using this

The price was right at about $130-140 from Amazon. It seems to be working pretty well though. Brings the temperature in the cabinet (about 30 cu.ft.) up maybe 10 degrees.

This light is pretty powerful and cheap. I have 2 and only really need one.

I also use T5 flourescent for my seedling tray. It seems to perform exactly the same as the LEDs:

How do you like using that LED and is it Glaxyhydro's 300w LED Grow Light? I'm thinking about buying one for a new grow tent.

u/Delucabazooka · 1 pointr/microgrowery

I am not.
I'm actuially running a galaxy hydro 300watt.
http://www.amazon.com/Galaxyhydro-Spectrum-Greenhouse-Flowering-Growing/dp/B00INM0750
And so far yes I would recommend it but for no more than 2 plants at a time.
IV started my seeds and gone through veg and I'm in my 3rd week of flower and so far so good!

Tho if I hadn't gone with a galaxy light I would have bought a Mars hydro I see them around here and on other sites enough to know there at least a decent brand. The thing to take into consideration is the price for LED lights will most likely cause a difference in the quality of the machine itself.(and also probably how long it will last).
