I'm guessing he's talking about an "Irish neighbourhood" in the US where towns/cities can be quite segregated by ancestral origin (surely after 3/4/5 generations you stop being "Irish American" and just become "American").

As for Ireland itself if you're visiting you'll probably fly into Dublin, which is worth a couple of days of your time... but realise that it's a city aimed at business and tourism and most things there service one of those things. Get out into Ireland. If you possibly can rent a car for a few weeks and just drive around. Head south down the East side, across the bottom, and north up the west.

Ireland has a rich history, and you can read all about it in books and online, stop in at a few castles on your way around armed with that knowledge; and it has some stunning scenery, so get off the main roads from time to time and have a look at it (and do stop at Giants Causeway, it's pretty cool)... but mostly what Ireland has is Irish people, and to experience that you have to talk to them.

As an aside, if you can get a copy of Tony Hawk Round Ireland With A Fridge it's well worth the read - funny and might give you some ideas about where to go.

TL;DR: be a traveller, not a tourist.

Tony Hawks once hitch-hiked around Ireland with a fridge, for a bet.

I'm dizzy just reading this. :-)

Unless you like travelling more than you like seeing stuff and doing stuff, I'd thin out the destinations. You could easily spend a month in Vietnam and not see everything. In a month, you're doing about 4 countries.

I'd ditch anything you don't need on the trip. Travelling with a 19inch monitor? Have your read this? You can buy a perfectly adequate monitor for 100 euros. Sell, give it away or bin it before you leave and buy, get given, find another one when you get home. Same with anything else you don't need. Anything you can't bear to part with, ship home before you leave.

Just my opinion.... You can ask for advice about the solo part of your travelling over at http://www.reddit.com/r/SoloTravel...
