What exactly is wrong with foam rolling the lower back? Spine in an unnatural position?

Any differences of preferences?

Rumble?

Grid??

Regular?

I used to have some shoulder discomfort. I am going to lay out what worked for me, this may not work for you. You need to spend some time figuring out your body. Some of the myofascial work you will end up doing will be extremely painful but after you will feel a million times better. When my shoulder was really bothering me, I would do this about 3x per week for 30 minutes or so. Now, I just do these exercises before and after any upper body lifting sessions.

You will need a couple of instruments that I think are super beneficial to upper body health.

  • Light Band this will be very useful for some stretching and traction.
  • Lacrosse balls, it will be painful and fantastic. You should get three. One that is normal and tape two of them together so they look like a peanut.
  • Rumble Roller it is pricey, but well worth it. If you can't afford it, grab a regular foam roller or a piece of PVC.
  • The Stick I think this is really useful for hitting the triceps which I will get into in a minute.

Typically I like to do myofascial release followed by some sort of stretching.

This video covers three awesome shoulder myofascial release points. I typically just do the ones with the two lacrosse balls tapped together and then one shoulder at a time.

  • I like to start with some thoracic mobilization with two lacrosse balls tapped together. Hit about 5 minutes in total. I like to attack the problem by moving my arm from the side towards the floor 2-3x, after the arms are above the ahead I lift my pelvis and then bring it down (it hits the muscle in a slightly different way.
  • One arm at a time. This video covers similar ideas to the above video but goes into a little more detail. Spend 4-5 minutes for each arm. It will be extremely painful.
  • I then like to use the stick to hit the triceps, about 2-3 minutes per arm. I used to think I was tight in the shoulders until I really hammered my triceps and it did wonders to help me get into the rack position and with my 2 and 3 board presses. I like to basically roll the stick up and down the tricep a few times and then hold on a point that is really painful and then move the arm in a full range of motion (tack and stretch).
  • Chest and front delt. I like to lay on the rumble roller and more or less do what is shown in this video I spend about 4-5 minutes a side. When I get into a spot that is painful I move my arm in a full range of motion.

The above more or less covers the myofascial release. I also like to hit the shoulder capsule, tricep, and pec with some band stretching as well. This video covers the basic stretches that I like to do.

A vibrating foam roller sounds incredible... Except probably just as painful at times as a normal foam roller. I don't use my foam roller as much as I should, but as soon as I make it enough of a habit to warrant an upgrade i think I'll be looking into a vibrating foam roller or one of these guys. Hope your party and cookie making goes well!

I meant I've been through multiple pairs. I'm on my 3rd in 3 years now :)

Oh and I should've mentioned that I do use a foam roller as well. I use the rumble roller: http://www.amazon.com/Dennis-Stubblefield-Sales-STI-Rumble/dp/B004JBT2FU

I have a black rumble roller and a lax ball that I use regularly focusing on IT band, quads, and hams. I should get more religious about their use. I can do better than 2-3x a week.
