Augusten Burroughs' Running with Scissors. Pretty odd life and an interesting read.

My favorite book of all time is A Tree Grows In Brooklyn. For those of you that haven't read it, it's about a girl who grows up in poverty.

Without giving away too many details, it's my favorite book because it put all of my problems in a different light for me. I've read it at least a dozen times, but the first time I read it I was at that point in my adolescence when I felt really sorry for myself. ;) Beyond that, it also helped me to appreciate my mother, and made me realize that no matter how often we fight, she would move mountains for me.

Here's my penny book!

Great contest! Thanks for holding it. :)

Running With Scissors was on our book cart. An offender in drug treatment was reading it and another offender in the program narced him out to an officer, thinking the book was inappropriate for his program (drug use, descriptions of sexual abuse). The officer confiscated the book and indicated in their report that it wasn't appropriate it was contraband, etc, etc... I wrote a whole high mighty memo, citing the relevant policy, the needs of offenders to have access to literature, that art isn't always pretty, and so on. My education director came in and said "Don't worry about it," she already had the book back and sent to the offender who had checked it out. So, you know, there's that.
