It's ok. You woke up because your instincts told you something was up. That's the good thing here. The other good thing is that now you know she can unlock that stupid door, and that she will go outside. Now you can install and turn on these door chimes. Both of my kids escaped the house and were brought back by neighbors before they should have reasonably been able to unlock the damn door, and now we have these on every door AND one on the bathroom door so kiddo isn't getting in there at night either.

Additionally, I use a door monkey to lock him in his room at night and I have a vertical bar baby gate on his doorway since I'm paranoid. Little shit isn't getting out anymore.

We have a slight width difference in the area where one of our gates is placed (bottom of the wall has thick trim.) We are using the Safety First gate, which lets you 'dial in' the top and bottom pressure gauges to fit your specific space.

Not gonna lie, it was a bit tricky to figure out the right tensioning for it when I was installing it. But it works quite well for us now.

I mean, I had the same type of stairs in our first house with our first kid. We got a baby gate that had pressure fittings (basically screw threaded rubber pads) that you used to squish the baby gate between the wall and the railing. Ours worked pretty well. Ours was something like [this one] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BTUNHSQ/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_6AiODb7CDGSJA), just make sure it is the right width. The screw out pads can only cover a certain distance, so measure where the railing is and get one that's close to that size.
