I think the big thing to realize is that we're all sinners, and that God's forgiveness is amazing. Also note that it took 353 years for St Thomas More to even be beatified - probably partially because of his life not being one of obvious sanctity. Day's cause was opened quite quickly. (It's also amusing to note that the Church of England regards St Thomas More as a Saint. Talk about "oops my bad.")

Also, St Thomas More is a martyr - which is a specific class of saint who is a saint because they died for their faith in Christ, died instead of giving up that faith. That's basically a ticket to heaven no matter how you lived your life up until that point.

Have I got a(nother) book for you!

Saints Behaving Badly: The Cutthroats, Crooks, Trollops, Con Men, and Devil-Worshippers Who Became Saints

>Exploring sources from a wide range of periods and places, Thomas Craughwell discovered a veritable rogues gallery of sinners-turned-saint. There’s St. Olga, who unleashed a bloodbath on her husband’s assassins; St. Mary of Egypt, who trolled the streets looking for new sexual conquests; and Thomas Becket, who despite his vast riches refused to give his cloak to a man freezing to death in the street.

Want to read about some interesting and entertaining criteria that is ignored or honored when people are made saints? =) I recommend this book: http://www.amazon.com/Saints-Behaving-Badly-Cutthroats-Devil-Worshippers/dp/0385517203. Saint Olaf and Olga are some of my favorites.
