Sounds like you do a lot of carrying around, so I'm going to recommend Chromebooks for how small they are.You can find models for less than $500 easy. Downsides are that you have to jump through some hoops to set up iTunes, and the same sort of business for Steam (if that's what you use for gaming).
After that's done, though, aside from those two points, chromebooks are very easy to own and operate. It uses the internet a lot to store things, and doesn't have a lot of internal storage, so be aware of that, but for your relatively lightweight needs it's a lot of bang for your buck.

If that doesn't sound like your jam, and you want a more "real" laptop, I'd suggest Lenovo brand. They're reliable, robust, and tend to be fairly cheap.
