> I didn't like the burden that increased blocks would put on nodes.
Have you seen the recent Graphene technology by Garzik? That problem is solved. A 1mb block can be communicated with a mere 2kb of data to the rest of the network using bloom filters.
> I believed this would push bitcoin towards centralization, that nodes would be forced to drop out from the increased storage burden.
Storage is cheap as hell and always getting cheaper, this was never an issue. The current blockchain is like 100gb, how much does that cost today? I can get that much space on a thumbdrive for less than $40 today, literally.
The larger issue was network flooding, but Graphene solves that handily.
> However, today I've moved several cryptocurrencies around extremely fast and with extremely low fees, while I have two bitcoin transactions stuck with $9 total fee for hours.
Me too. The reduced utility caused by full blocks should be a red-flag for everyone. That's why those who know what it means are leaving the ship after B2x was cancelled. It's a vote of no-confidence in the direction of Core.
> So, I'll admit it. Whatever's going on on our side, it doesn't seem to be working. Segwit sounds good, but Lightning Network? I don't know if that's the solution for this.
> So. I'm a No2xer, and after today, I think i might have been wrong.
Glad you're seeing the light. See, there's actually logic over here and we aren't all simply shills or pumpers. BCH preserves the original development path of bitcoin, it literally has more claim to the bitcoin name that corecoin does at this point.
What will the primary purpose be? Long term storage? Frequent read/writes?
Can't go wrong with https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-128GB-METAL-MUF-128BA-AM/dp/B017DH3NOW/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1510526608&sr=8-4&keywords=128+gb+flash+drive+usb+3.0 , it's what I have to run TAILS.
Actually a pretty good article. My normal USB carry for IT work:
I also keep 7 USB keys in my backpack. You can get usb2.0 keys for extremely cheap these days, and usb3 prices are almost equally as low.
I just realized one day that I would buy something, use it for a week or so, and then toss it in a box and forget about it. So I donated it all except for my rMBP and the other stuff on the list.
I keep a 1TB hard drive for my main data backups of my photography, software, and to hold full-quality Blu-Ray rips of a few of my favorite movies (20-25GB each, the Blu-Rays were then donated to the local library; I know, questionable legality...). It is full-disk encrypted with a LONG passphrase.
The 128GB Flash Drive also holds backups of my iCloud drive, financial files, and other important data that is used more frequently. Also full-disk encrypted with a long passphrase, with the really sensitive data being inside another layer of encrypted DMG's with a different passphrase just in case. It is this flash drive, and is built like a tank: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-128GB-Flash-MUF-128BA-AM/dp/B017DH3NOW
The overall goal was to have backups of data in multiple places in case something is stolen. It should be noted that I am not a data hoarder though, it is just that much of what I do have on the drives is very important. I have taken a minimalist stance with my data.
Eu am asta și sunt mulțumit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017DH3NOW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_qQtZDbGWJSKG7
the one i have the tip is recessed. the whole thing is one solid unit, just over 2 years on my keyring and its still in perfect condition
As a fellow photographer, I'd say
Bonus tip: bringing photo gear quickly piles up a lot of wall chargers - to get around this, I invested in one wall adapter with surge protection and multiple outlets, and then plug my laptop into that, and most of the usb electronics through my laptop. This cuts down on the number of wall warts and adapters, so you motly end up with one adapter + some cords.
I've worn out many flash drives on my keyring, this is the only one that has not failed/died/smashed/bent/corroded/etc:

Prepare for this post to be removed, they have pretty strict rules.
Anyway, I would recommend these 2:

I went with this drive: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B017DH3NOW/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I wanted something fairly rugged. The plan is to partition 100/28GB exFAT/LiveUSB, so this will also be my general purpose USB drive, too
That's why I was looking at it. I'm currently using a 64gb micro sd card. And the speeds are pretty horrendous. Was looking at this one. Samsung 128gb 3.0 drive
The 128gb version seems to have good speeds. Light years ahead of my micro sd right now.
Edit- easier on the eyes
>> a good flash drive is like more than half the price of a cheap SSD with 1/8 the space and much worse performance.
wat
Where exactly are you finding a 1TB SSD for $60?
@OP: Still I would be surprised if USB performed well for this... if you have USB 3.0, you can pick up a USB 3.0 32GB for $10 and try it if you want. If it doesn't work well (most likely case) then hey, you've got a sweet USB 3.0 flash drive with plenty of space for other things.

>most people should do to protect their information
Never give out any information that you would never want public to anyone online anywhere. If it's in a private email, assume you're posting it to a public site like Reddit. Never send sensitive information to anyone for any reason, even if they ask for it, and you will never worry about being compromised by scam or phishing. The easiest way to break into a network during a pentest is to simply embed a payload into a PDF file, and email it. The PDF attachment and email appear to be a legitimate invoice that is past due, prompting you to open it out of panic. Of course, once opened you've compromised your machine and given me a foothold into your network. Another common way I get people is to click a link via IM. Skype resolves SMB links, which sends your windows password in the form of an NTLM hash. I just need that hash. I don't even need to break it. You click that link, and you will connect to my server and more or less hand me your windows password and login.
TL;DR: You are the weakest link. Prepare yourself mentally to be on guard 24/7/365 when online. Never post any information on any platform that you wouldn't mind being public. If it must be posted (like paying with a credit card), have a plan together for dealing with fraudulent transactions and reclaiming your identity. You want to know NOW how to fix all these things so you can react quick enough for when they inevitably happen (it is almost guaranteed you will have your card information stolen and abused at some point now).
>Also, is there a point to having an emergency flash drive and what would be worth putting on it?
Absolutely! Just be sure to encrypt it in the event it is lost or stolen. This can be done with Bitlocker on Windows or with the Disk Utility application in Mac. If you're rockin Linux, you're probably already familiar with LUKS. If you want to use an application not built in, I recommend Vera Crypt. It is a ported and maintained version of True Crypt, and is cross-platform, and is easy to use.
There are also water/shock/dust resistant drives, like this one.
If you want a water/shock/dust resistant stick-type, you can get something like this and use a necklace chain to wear it as a necklace.
Information you might want to keep on your emergency flash drive:
NEVER STORE THIS UNENCRYPTED
I actually have a persistent copy of TAILS installed on a drive. I can plug that in and load into it, and have all my information ready to rock at any moment. Essentially I can plug in and boot my drive from any working computer with a USB port, and have my desktop ready to go with all my code and critical files. All with tinfoil-level encryption, and I know my files will be unrecoverable on whatever machine I use.
X1C5 i can live boot, in UEFI mode, The latest solus ISO, the latest daily Fedora 25 WORK build (https://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/live-respins/), Ubuntu 17.04
Antergos is actually the slickest, since the installer supports the systemd UEFI bootloader, which is an order of magnatude faster booting than GRUB.
You may want to confirm your USB drive is in working order. I use one of these mostly due to speed and reliability, https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-128GB-METAL-MUF-128BA-AM/dp/B017DH3NOW/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1497620618&sr=8-4&keywords=samsung+usb+flash
Maybe this one has good reviews and is cheap http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-128GB-Flash-MUF-128BA-AM/dp/B017DH3NOW/ref=sr_1_2/189-0683571-8671765?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1459342182&sr=1-2&refinements=p_n_feature_keywords_browse-bin%3A5947560011

I've reviewed the Known Issues page with USB sticks. Below is an amazon link to the USB I bought. Any additional known issues with this stick? Unfortunately I only have 2 sticks over 8 GB. I have 4 or 5 laying around that are 4 GB so won't be able to test again in awhile. Was really excited too! Will try another laptop later this week and see if I still run into issues. Thanks again for the help.

Can someone please recommend a usb stick for sentry mode in a model 3? I purchased this one from amazon but it doesnt give me the option to format it in fat32 as it says its too large https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017DH3NOW/ref=twister_B0148N153A?_encoding=UTF8&th=1

Can someone please point me in the direction of a USB drive that is working well for them. I am using a mac if it matters. Thanks
Do you really want an SSD hanging off of SHIELD?
Personally, I'd just go for either 16GB with USB3 drive like this one: [Samsung 128GB Metal] (https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-128GB-METAL-MUF-128BA-AM/dp/B017DH3NOW)
Or if you have the cash, wait and buy the 500GB version at the end of the month when its available.
I'm not too sure if you're limited to what you can transfer to the USB. Right now I'm using this USB (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017DH3NOW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ivMBybBF4HMFQ) However if you like the idea and are willing to shell out an extra $30, this one is probably a better investment (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EZ0X55C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_hxMByb13J26FV)
Sorry for just the links and not hyperlinks, I'm on mobile right now.
