This with the 3950X must be the best value on the workstation market, especially the compact WS market. Have you seen the four RAM slots on an ITX? 128GB RAM for 500 USD ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07N124XDS ) is pretty insane.

Pity they didn't put PCIe lanes in that OCuLink .

40GB (8 soldered + 32) works. Someone else on the sub did it not too long ago. Even included the RAM module. I’m personally running 24GB (8 soldered + 16)

u/MagpieDev · 4 pointsr/thinkpad

Hey, that drive is pretty good but this one's my recommendation if you want something faster with 2 Tb capacity, I personally use a 1tb version of this and I can tell you it's fast 3500mb reads and about 3300 writes.

Samsung 970 EVO Plus Series - 2TB PCIe NVMe - M.2 Internal SSD (MZ-V7S2T0B/AM) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MFZXR1B/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_tWMHDbGBDG7R1

As for ram you only have one option, right now only Samsung is making 32gb sodimms so if you want 64 gb that's what you have to go for, at least for the time being until another company gets around to making them. That said Samsung ram isn't the fastest but it's your only option if you want to go 32gb on each slot. There's stuff like hyper x impact which has lower latency at 15. Samsung's latency is 19, lower is better but it's not day and night difference either. I for one got the base config with 16gb and after I scanned it I found out they put Samsung ram on mine so I just bought a matching stick of 16gb to make it 32gb

I am looking to get the gen 2 first chance it goes on sale. Does anyone know what the available slots are on it?

Lenovo.com lists 32Gb ram and 1Tb SSD as max but I assume that is just what they can deliver

but I would like to have (2x32Gb ram and 2x2Tb 660p m.2 nvme SSD)

ram: 2x150$

ssd 660p 2x200$

This looks like I would get a powerful machine for a very reasonable price. From reading online, it looks like the upgrades would fit in a gen 1, any idea if it would work in a gen 2 too?

u/GatsbyGlen · 3 pointsr/thinkpad

I got the configuration 50% off through JPChase perks, I couldn't pass it up, so I just got the RAM. However, it is pretty cheap. My configuration came with the RAM below, and they inserted it under the keyboard. So the remaining two slots are easily accessible under the back cover, although I don't think I need more than 64.

Not the answer you’re looking for but sharing it anyway as you might have not considered it. I’m not sure about your reason why you would want a 16gb x16gb config but for mine I got 16gb stock and bought a 32gb. The reason is so I could keep my exisiting RAM and if I plan to upgrade in the future then I just replace the 16Gb with another 32gb. I got mine from amazon. Cheaper now on Black Friday sale: Samsung 32GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM Memory Module for Laptop Computers (260 Pin SODIMM, 1.2V) M471A4G43MB1 https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07N124XDS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ycG4DbTSRB8V3

I used the Samsung RAM for mine. And it is at the cheapest currently: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-2666MHz-Memory-Computers-M471A4G43MB1/dp/B07N124XDS

EDIT: I lie.. it is 2 bucks more now. I bought mine at $124

u/mircolino · 3 pointsr/thinkpad

Yes. Samsung I believe is currently the only company manufacturing a 2666MHz 32GB SODIMM but it's rated at CL19.

u/srosendahl · 2 pointsr/thinkpad

I just installed this Samsung 32GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM Memory Module for Laptop Computers (260 Pin SODIMM, 1.2V) M471A4G43MB1 in my T490 (that came with an 8GB soldered to the motherboard). So now it has a total of 40GB, works great, no issues.

u/justbrain · 2 pointsr/thinkpad

Yep, took out the 8GB module, replaced it with this:

Samsung 32GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07N124XDS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

So 8GB soldered + 32GB on only one slot; voila 40GB.

u/biznatch11 · 2 pointsr/thinkpad

If you upgrade the RAM and SSD yourself it will probable be cheaper. Buy it with 8GB RAM then buy 2x32GB. I found this on Amazon I don't know anything about that particular seller but that's the RAM you'd need, as far as I know only Samsung currently makes 32GB SO-DIMMs. For the SSD there are lots of options for a 1TB drive, you'd have to install the drive the install Windows etc.

u/A_Behrmann · 2 pointsr/thinkpad

I picked everything up from amazon.

If you're intending on running Kubernetes or ESXi on your NUCs, you might consider investing the bucks in populating your boxen with these, especially with RAM prices where they are now.

If I were rebuilding my NUC lab this is what I'd do, but alas, my NUCs are DDR3.

u/gnwjd12 · 2 pointsr/hardwareswap

Amazon has it for 113 per stick, wondering if you take offers.

u/Mindless_Art · 2 pointsr/mac

Yeah, I think even with the added cost of labor you should still end up well below Apple's insane RAM prices, especially for the higher configurations (32 GB RAM / 64 GB RAM). For example, Apple charges an additional $1000 for 64 GB RAM. If you buy the RAM from elsewhere, you'd end up with a cost of around $300, give or take: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-2666MHz-Memory-Computers-M471A4G43MB1/dp/B07N124XDS/

So even with labor cost, you are still saving a ton of money. Same story for 32 GB RAM.

One last bit of advice: The SSD of the Mac mini 2018 is soldered in, meaning that you can't replace it. While you can always use external storage with the machine, I suggest you bump the internal SSD to at least 512 GB at the time of purchase, regardless. You can of course transfer your audio files to the external drive, but you may still wish to have some headroom internally, so that such transfers have to happen less frequently. But then, this is kind of an afterthought, the only important matter are the processors, as RAM can be upgraded and external storage can be used with it.

u/pattygq · 2 pointsr/thinkpad

Drop the 32gb option to 8gb and get it cheaper on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07N124XDS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_I0TzDbSXM7AQS

u/visi_al · 2 pointsr/thinkpad

I would say to send it back and order a model with 8GB of RAM. At the same time order yourself a 64 GB kit (or a single 32GB module) and install it. It will be much cheaper. I would go for dual channel myself.

Right now at Lenovo website to upgrade the RAM to 32 GB it costs 455$ more and a whooping 1061$ more for 64GB of RAM. While a single Samsung 32GB memory module costs only 140$ with a quick search: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-2666MHz-Memory-Computers-M471A4G43MB1/dp/B07N124XDS/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_147_t_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=S5ZK1TZ06ZE7AJFD67XR

So just for kicks, I will put in a 64gb (32x2) sticks today and see if it works. I ordered it for my laptop but it wouldn't hurt to pop it in and see it fail. This is item on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07N124XDS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hi /u/andifeind!

I also have a T470s. If you don't mind, could you please verify the specs of your module via dmidecode and help me to confirm the specs of the module to get?

My problem is I found this module at amazon ($200 USD), but it says it runs at 2666 MHz, and I found my memory modules are running at 2133 MHz, so not sure it's the right one.

Or, simply, do you have a link of the module you bought?

Thanks, mate!

These are my current specs:

Sorry, didn't mention that I installed the RAM and swapped out the SSD.

The model came with 16 GB RAM (it's soldered so get it topped out). Then I got this Samsung 32 GB Ram stick ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07N124XDS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 )

My model came with a 512 GB SSD. I've swapped it with the Samsung 970 Pro 1TB SSD ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BYHGNB5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

I also did not buy the T490 from Lenovo directly (as their order time is like 3-4 weeks) but got the T490 from Amazon also at https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RX283FD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Actually I just got a shock looking at the price, as I've paid $600 more 4 days ago! I think I will need to return/swap it out...

Here’s the (2x16gb) kit for $125. I would stick with either Samsung or crucial ram.

The SSD you've chosen is a decent SSD. Reliable and fast enough for day to day usage.

For the RAM, wouldn't it make more sense to go with 2666 MHz for just a bit more money? If you laptop supports 2666 MHz, I would highly recommend these kits.

I also wouldn't recommend cheaping out on RAM as they require constant usage and lower prices generally means lower quality. A cheap RAM kit that might break will cost you more than a high quality more expensive one that doesn't break. It also applies for SSDs.

Thank you very much for your reply.

I decided to go for the T490,
right now both the T480 and T490 are the same price for te base config with core i7 and WQHD. But the T490 has a slightly faster turbo boost and has a brighter display.

I will get one 32gb Ram module: Samsung 32GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM Memory Module for Laptop Computers (260 Pin SODIMM, 1.2V) M471A4G43MB1 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07N124XDS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_OOCZCbV8WRF46

And why would you get this if you could get two of these - https://amazon.com/-/dp/B07N124XDS/ they are the same sticks and they worked perfectly in my XPS 15

Edit: am dumb, this is an Australian link. Still, would probably be cheaper to import from the US Amazon.
