You might be able to snag a CB Plus for close to this. You can get a used one for $330 on amazon right now. It is worth it for that amazing 3:2 screen IMHO. It is SOOOOO much better than a 16:9 screen in tablet mode and significantly better overall IMHO.

Depends on what you're looking for and whether you're okay with refurb/open box machines. At your price point, you can even get some of the 2-in-1 machines if you find a sale. Here is one at Best Buy for $199 (same machine in red is $189) right now that will run Linux, but I don't think it has Android Apps because it lacks a touchscreen. Here's one for around $230 that has been one of the best value CBs for like 2 years running, and it has a touchscreen. Both those models have SD/microSD card slots to expand storage and they . If you can dig a little deeper AND don't mind used, this is the one I own, currently going for less than $300 for a used one, but I totally understand if that's above your price ceiling. It's just the only one I can personally speak to that's moderately recent (and I love it! it's fantastic and definitely supports Linux and Android apps, plus I have a 128 GB micro SD expanding the storage literally right now as I type this. I'll probably be using it until the end of service date 3 years from now). But you'd be alright with anything on this list, which is all the devices that support enabling the Linux environment. Can't go wrong with the big names (Acer, ASUS, Dell, Lenovo, etc).

Speaking of enabling the Linux environment, it is currently optional and you have to do some things to enable it after you get a machine off that list (if you do) to prove you know what you're doing, I guess. r/Crostini has an excellent wiki should you decide to go the chromebook route, with a getting started guide that can really help. The best part is, ChromeOS takes way less system resources than even Win10- that same Inspiron 3000 hardware that u/QuestionThrowaway404 rightfully said chugs even with added RAM is decently snappy when a smaller OS is on it. Yes, I've used the Toshiba Chromebook 1st series (my first CB), an Asus Flip 1st gen (first 2-in-1), and now I have just purchased this Samsung Chromebook Plus.

I spent a lot of time going back and forth between this and the comparable Asus 302. Ultimately went with the Plus becuase:

I'm considering these two if I go for a chromebook. You pretty much wouldn't be able to game on these at all due to the OS. The samsung has a built in stylus if you plan to do notetaking with it. They're both lightweight/durable so they seem good for travel. I plan on running crouton for added versatility and coding development. And tbh I like the idea of a polished macbook feel.

Overall, for me the choice is coming down to whether I want the 2 in 1 tablet + touchscreen/stylus notetaking capabilities, added portability, and lighter weight chromebook, or the software versatility and comfort of having a windows notebook I'm more familiar with. First reddit post, so be nice.I have been looking at a chromebook over the past few months to replace my ipad mini 3 while also being useful as a way into the google ecosystem, as i have recently switched from office to docs etc and am looking at getting a google pixel to replace my samsung a5. I have concluded that the samsung plus is my best option, as i will be primarily watching youtube, doing google docs, playing android apps and surfing the web on it. I say this due to the 1440p display, it being thin and light so it can be more of a tablet, and a 3;2 aspect ratio. The pen is also a bonus. I have also looked at the lenovo 300/500e, asus c302/c101/c213 and acer r13/11, however did conclude that the chromebook plus was my best option.

However a major issue with this is that the chromebook plus is not sold in the uk, so i am struggling to find ways to purchare it and get it to the uk. So far i have found two different listings of the chromebook plus on amazon.com:

I have not found another store selling the chromebook other than amazon.com that ships to the uk, if that does exist please tell me! I do have amazon prime, so that takes out delivery cost for prime items. However, i would like it new so that eliminates most of the options. a chromebook honestly. most laptops that arent 3 or 4 years old are probably going to be mostly built for browsing the web, and will break in 6 months or so. going up into the 700-800 range can net you some better computers. it's the difference between this and T H I S

Slightly over budget as well, but the Samsung Chromebook Plus is a wonderful Chromebook that is a convertible 2-in-1 laptop which actually has an upgraded display, 12.3" 2400x1600 display which will be extremely clear. The chromebook is slightly cheaper on Amazon at $430, but I'm not really sure if I would call it the best web device. I think it's better if you're interested in using the google app store to purchase games and what-not. There are certainly cheaper devices if you're interested in just web browsing (that are windows devices).

It'll depend on what features you want, but you can often find versions of the Samsung ChromeBook Plus in that range. Both the V1 and V2 are great, though they vary in specs a bit. V1 has a nicer, squarer screen, and it's lighter. V2 has a better keyboard and a full sized USB. They're well built machines, have a touch and pen interface, and they do the whole tablet/flip thing. I've had great luck with the Samsung Chromebooks, and I've had both versions of the Plus and it's upscale counterpart Pro and they're all fantastic.
