Gear VR is getting huge sales figures. It's exceeding both Samsung and Oculus expectations both in reception and adoption.
We live in our own little enthusiast bubble on reddit, but the Gear VR has great reviews in the real world.
Just take a look at what real users think of it as a product.
It has a 4.5 star rating with 80% of reviews being 4 or 5 stars. That's pretty impressive for a "sub par" product, in your eyes.
The new Gear VR is compatible with the Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge plus, and the Note 5. It retails for $99 from Best Buy and Amazon. It is currently sold out but you can place an order on Amazon and they'll ship it when they get some more. If you have another PC already and newer phone you can do what I did and find almost all the remaining hardware quite easily second hand or online for less than $100. It basically involves getting a decent mobile VR like a GearVR Headset, using Riftcat to connect to your PC and then either picking up some old PS3 move stuff or for a little bit more money (~$200) getting a more polished tracking set such as the NoloVR.
DaleyTech has a youtube channel that talks you through most of it.
Personally I have never had a problem with it and I really like having no cables attached. I must warn you though, I have never really suffered from VR sickness and while my girlfriend is fine with the VIVE, she gets some sickness after playing with the wireless/mobile VR for more than 15 minutes.
Isn't that the old samsung gear vr selling for $15 on amazon?
I'm 100% getting it now. Can you tell the difference between these two on Amazon? I noticed the model numbers are different but can't see anything else (other than the price). Just want to make sure I get the most recent version.

Yes, people's accessibility to demos is a major problem. Also yes brick and mortar stores are terrible.
My recommendation is to just buy the headset on Amazon if you have any friends who have a compatible cell phone see if you can borrow it for a bit (and obv offer them a demo too). There's tons of free content that you can try out. If you end up not liking it then just return it.

I'm aware that's a bit ridiculous but that's the non-VR world we live in.
If he has a compatible phone the Samsung Gear VR might be worth a go. I've not tried it so can't properly recommend it but I have tried the HTC Vive system which was amazing, but at $800 is out of your budget.
Since he is into gaming, consider a VR headset like this one>

If you want something more elaborate, you could organize a history-themed treasure hunt in your locality/ city with a small prize for every puzzle he solves. Or a minecraft themed hunt> https://games.thefuntimesguide.com/2011/09/scavenger-hunts.php

Lots of great suggestions! Thank you so much I'll try to get to most of these this week.
The Inventor's edition (The old one) supports the Note 4 however, the consumer edition (The new one) doesn't. Only Note5, S6, S6 edge, S6 edge plus, S7 and S7 edge are supported by the consumer edition.
