For our purposes, it means that you should look at the inexpensive NVMe SSDs like the Intel 660p or the Crucial P1, and avoid the more expensive drives like the Samsung 970 Evo or 970 Pro.

You should still narrow down to M.2 NVMe or M.2 Sata. The M.2 NVMe is a bit faster and would be preferred. Google your laptop brand to be sure or make sure you can return otherwise. Once you have the new drive the tool Macrium Reflect is pretty good for duplicating your old drive on the new SSD drive. As far as choice:

My suggestion:
Yup, upgraded both memory stick and SSD. I think there is a backlag when ordering X1 Extreme Gen 2 since this laptop got so popular now that Lenovo is having difficult time keep up with the demand, but definitely recommend get lowest spec you can for SSD and RAM and you can upgrade them yourself. Just makes sure you get the right screws.
In case if anyone is interested, below are the SSD and RAM I got and so far my laptop has running amazingly well and memory utilization rarely exceeds 60%.
For SSD, I use Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB
For ram, I use OWC 64GB (2 x 32GB) 2666MHz DDR4 PC4-21300

Personally I'd recommend 1 for the price and storage capacity but if your on a budget 3 and 4 are good options. The Most expensive one is amazing with really fast read and write speeds but at a hefty price.
Ah, having looked a bit more into that drive specifically I see what you mean. In that case, what would your recommend for the SSD to use? I'd really like to have the terabyte for my laptop but the ~250 dollars the samsung SSDs seem to cost is hard to justify. Are there any (reasonable) less expensive alternatives?
If not I'll just save up for the 970 EVO SSD.
If you search youtube for "hdd ssd nvme" you'll see a lot of comparison videos, nvme is theoretically faster but practically speaking it ends up being about the same speed as sata.

Can you explain the differences between the pro, evo plus, and pro evo? There's a bunch of different models and it's confusing. Just finished reading this article and I still don't understand the differences. The Pro version is somehow cheaper than the Evo Plus version.

I think the 970EVO+ is replacing the 970EVO. The main difference is that 970EVO+ is faster. Also if you are going to be shopping at Micro Center stores keep in mind you can price match in order to get better deals.

X570 and different features. In terms of pure performance, benchmarks show B450 being more than enough and matching. Unless you do lots of mass mass mass data processing and need PCIE 4 pushing 8GB/s of data....you dont need that mobo.

DF15 or BeQuiet Dark Pro are the standard these days for air coolers.
I'm in the early stages of building my replacement gaming desktop and looking at SSD options. I will need at least 1 TB and prefer the M.2 form factor for simplicity, but I'm not opposed to 2.5" drives. I don't necessarily need NVMe for my use case, but the deals today on Samsung's lineup are tempting:

Price isn't a big concern, I'm just looking for good value.
