I'd recommend the Samsung T3 256GB SSD and just use it for the few games you're currently playing. It's half the price too.

If you're wondering about what sort of performance boost you can get with an external SSD for your Xbox One, I'd recommend watching this Digital Foundry video about it. In short, some games have some fairly big improvements; certainly impressed me.

I haven't done extensive testing of USB3 SSDs or anything, so I can't tell you if this one is better or worse than any other options, but I can tell you it speeds up initial load times of everything significantly in most games.

In Destiny (both 1 and 2) I'm usually fully loaded into the tower and have already talked to like 3 different vendors before my non-SSD-using friends finally load in.

After hooking up the device to your Xbox One and converting it to an Xbox One usable drive (I think the Xbox prompts you to do this automatically, if I remember correctly, though it has been a while since I first got this) make sure you move the Destiny 2 install over to it (from the Manage App stuff in the Xbox One dashboard UI) to get the loading speed benefits.

you dont need a $2k computer to do software engineering. Only if you decide to do graphics, then you'll need the GPU.

I did my degree with a fucking $200 chrome book and a usb stick with a linux distro popped onto it man. all these fucking kids with their $2k laptops rofl.

Samsung makes a variety of gigabyte options, all with a varied price. They also have an 1tb and 2tb option, depending on how much coin you have.

External SSDs are surprisingly tiny. The Samsung T3 is native USB-C (USB 3.0) as well... although it only comes with a USB-A <-> USB-C cable.

This is a good Portable Drive. GO for it. If you want more speed get an ssd!

If you buy and iMac buy the 27 Inches one (The only one that you can upgrade the RAM memory), and make sure that has a SSD drive. All 21 inches mac are not upgrade friendly.

The hard drive combined with the 4k resolution were killing me making the computer super slow, imagine chrome, photoshop, phpstorm, cyberduck, sequel pro open at the same time, I was going crazy but I got it fixed using a [Samsumg External USB3 SSD] (http://amzn.to/2kbqNLL) , that really improved the speed, I would say 10x (no more beach ball when changing windows).
Then I noticed that with animations it was still laggy so I went to system preferences / display to change the resolution, if you hold option while clicking Scaled you have more resolutions to choose, but the trick is using a low resolution mode because if you use a regular one is basically 4k downscaled that still need a lot lot of processing power. With those changes it is almost perfect, I asked my boss for a second monitor(1440p) and I did not notice any change in performance so that external SSD was a sanity saver for me.

I put it together since 2012 and is still as fast as the first day I'm using it with 2 1440p monitors, I think that computer can last me easily 6 years more without any sign of slowness.

If you're going to be working off of the external HDD itself, you'll want an external SSD if you want the fastest performance.

It's pretty quick, and was def a upgrade from my old 5200 RPM portable HDD.

Larger SSDs however come at a premium price.

What you could do however, and purchase internal versions of SSD in the size you want and purchase an external enclosure that supports USB 3.1, this will give you some flexibility in the type/size of SSD you want and potentially save you some money if you go with larger capacity SSDs. www.newegg.com has a good selection of internal SSDs and external SSD enclosures.

Or, you could go the NAS way, and purchase a WD MyCloud that hooks up to your router. The companion app is really nice and allows you to log in while you're on the go and access your entire library and workflow. The downside, is that working off of that while mobile will be slower. You could download the files locally, work on them, and then send back to the drive for storage.

So it all depends on what you're really looking for.

With full time access to everything with MyCloud, you have slower speeds and will have to edit locally.

With faster editing on an external SSD, you potentially lack limited access to your files unless you're ok with plugging in the SSD to laptop to desktop constantly.

I have the 500 GB version of this one and really like it, but I think there are SanDisk ones for cheaper. I just don't like SanDisk that much.

I literally keep it plugged in and resting on top of my Xbox.

The laptop already comes with a super fast PCIeSSD. I don't like the idea of swapping it out for something slower and smaller.

Would there be a large difference in speed (load time, frame rate) between USB 3.1 External SSD and an internal SATA III SSD? Specifally for running games like Witcher, FarCry, Fallout, etc.?

consider a USB SSD. Samsung just came out with the T3 which is $110 for 250GB on Amazon.

I have the previous model (T1) which is so much faster than the mSD, 100Mb/s write speeds and read is in the 300+ range. These are real world numbers, the things are wicked fast.

Anyway, yes it sticks out the side but it may be a better and much much faster alternative than mSD if you are gaming.
