Hugh Howey wrote a book about this called Sand. It's a post apocalyptic book and they use vibrations to fluidize the sand and dive for old-world relics.

This pictures reminds me of a book series that I just finished reading. A world has, for reasons uncovered in the book, undergone a very long draught and become a desert, with sand invading like in the picture. They are not long reads, nor are the difficult reads, just fun easy reading in an world that leaves lots of room for the imagination.

First is Sand by Hugh Howey (the 'omnibus' has all 3 books included)

And then a fan wrote a sequel called Dunes over Danvar (again this 'omnibus' includes all the parts). It is not 'fanfic' quality, it is actually written by Michael Bunker, who is well known and won some awards.

I recently went on a bender reading books about dystopian post-apocalyptic societies. The Silo Saga (Wool, Shift, and Dust) by Hugh Howey, Sand by the same author, and then the Wayward Pines series (Pines, Wayward, and The Last Town) by Blake Crouch.

At the risk of giving away spoilers that could be found in any reviews, all three series explore little bubbles of society that are initially unaware of their status as the last remaining humans on Earth. All of the books are edge-of-your-seat fantastic, with the Silo Saga in particular being absolutely fantastic science fiction literature. I sincerely recommend all the listed books.

I believe the Silo Saga has been optioned to Ridley Scott, which is beyond awesome as the material is perfect for him. The Wayward Pines series just finished filming a mini-series (based on the first book, Pines) with a really impressive cast list. I think its being helmed by M. Night Shyamalan, but I actually trust him with the source material (its right up his alley and familiar to his earliest work).

Sand by Hugh Howey.

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch.

Startide Rising by David Brin.

Read the "Look Inside" excerpts to see if any of these is right for you.

It's a fictional book about people "diving" deep into sand to find hidden treasures/lost civilizations: https://www.amazon.com/Sand-Omnibus-Hugh-Howey-ebook/dp/B00HSXGYCK

People have already suggested Hugh Howey's Silo series, but I'd also suggest Sand by him as well. It was the first of his books that I read -- didn't enjoy it quite as much as the others, but it's still good, gritty (literally) post-apocalyptic sci fi. I believe there's a sequel coming out soon as well.

One book I am reading at the moment (I usually juggle a handful at a time) is "Sand" by Hugh Howey. It's an interesting take on a post-apocalyptic future. I'm enjoying it so far.

>The old world is buried. A new one has been forged atop the shifting dunes. Here in this land of howling wind and infernal sand, four siblings find themselves scattered and lost. Their father was a sand diver, one of the elite few who could travel deep beneath the desert floor and bring up the relics and scraps that keep their people alive. But their father is gone. And the world he left behind might be next.
