The runners who have posted in other forums are equally enamored of the Ipod Nano and the Sandisk Sport Plus. You'd have to get a used or refurbished Nano as the have been discontinued although new ones still pop up here and there. The Sandisk Sport Plus seems to die after a couple of years. The nano's pretty much never do fail. None of mine have failed yet, except for needing battery replacement. The number of new items coming out have been small because everybody uses their phones. OH, another point - both require sideloading of audiobooks. I usually have 16-20 audiobooks on the Nano plus some songs on days I just don't wanna book.

Coincidentally my brother's iPod died not too long ago and after a bit of research he bought this one 16gb was enough for him and had bluetooth capabilities for his speakers. No need for itunes and he said it's great.

I found this for headphones for people with hearing impairments. If he likes popular music from the 50/60s I'd say most streaming services would have all the big artists. I'm sure theres a bunch of online radio stations that play that stuff too. Not sure how you'd set it up for Jack to be able to work it on his own though. Maybe buy some 50/60s compilation albums of his favourite artists on iTunes and put them on a simple to use mp3 device? Here's one that only has a few buttons, something similar to that.

I have been using the SanDisk Clip Sport Plus. It is great.
