On my thumb drive I mainly store past papers lecture presentations critical readings and et cetera I don’t really need that much space as I’m using many textbase documents cloud storage sort out most my needs

I’m driving is really good because it can switch from USB A to USB C which makes it very convenient

Literally any large size USB 2 flash drive will work. I use this one so I can quickly review and manage recordings on my Pixel 3 but you don't have to spend the extra money for it. Just get a large drive. The car is not picky and this is not rocket science. If you want to get really serious about it, you can get a SSD drive and put it in a rugged case. You can also hook up a Raspberry Pi Zero so it dumps the files into your home network server each night when you park.

Consider SanDisk 256GB Ultra Dual Drive, or something like it.

Please make sure you buy your MacBook Pro's or iMac's with at least 16GB ram.

Here's a spec of a decent card.

https://www.sandisk.com/home/memory-cards/microsd-cards/ultra-microsd

Shows only "Read Speed: up to 95MB/s"... so you're giving the micro sd card way too much credit. :)

Here is spec of a decent usb HDD

https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Ultra-256GB-Type-C-SDDDC2-256G-G46/dp/B06XC1WGQR/

Shows only "Read speeds, up to 150MB/s"... so even though it's not the theoretical speeds. It's clear that usb HDD is much faster than micro sd.
