A modern thumb drive still uses a USB A connector. The new Macbook doesn't have a female USB A port, it only has one female USB C thus you need an adapter. That same USB C port is used to charge the Macbook.

There are some USB drives that have a Type C connector but they're rare because they're new, and you still can't charge your laptop and have the drive plugged in because only one digital port.

i looked a few weeks back, couldnt find a drive with both USB C and USB A male ends like those slick sandisk MicroUSB+USB-A drives . I just bought the male C to female A adapter from the google store ($13) since i want my drives to work on all my devices since i mostly use a flash drive to offload TWRP and titanium backups for safe storage should i need them later on, or i have to wipe my phone. i have a 64GB drive that i also mirror on my network storage because multiple backups is always a good idea, so i need it to work on my main computer and not just my phone.

edit - Just looked again and sandisk now makes a USB C male + USB A Male drive way too expensive $40 for a 32GB model though. must have come out recently, i looked specifically for this not long ago. hope they do a 128GB model for a reasonable price soon.

As a 6P owner, I'ma little biased but all that put aside, I came from a Note 3 so I had the same gripes as you: No expandable storage, no removable battery, etc...Here my solutions to those problems. For the most part the 6P battery will get me through a day of heavy use pretty easily (listening to spotify, watching videos, texting, emailing and whatnot). Just in case I always carry around a portable power bank. As for expandable storage, I would like to point out with Google's photo app, you receive unlimted storage for high quality photos, however, don't quote me on this, but at some point I believe past 1080P it starts to eat into a 10GB limit. I advise using a USB stick for external storage, it's small, portable, and overall very convenient. Best of luck making your decision! It's a tough one! If you have any questions about the 6P just let me know!

Edit: If you are strictly looking just to offload files to get more storage and not transfer them to a computer via usb, this Dongle gives you more storage and it costs less than the previous link. If you do want to move pictures and videos, you can always buy an adapter.

I have this flash-drive. It works perfectly and is compatible with everything. Also I use the ES File Explorer App to transfer files.

After OS I have 25.01 GB left. I have no large games on my phone, and the app that uses the most storage is Google play music (current list is 3.5 GB).

For extra storage you could use Google drive 2$ (monthly) for 100GB or if you use Office 365 you already have 2TB on OneDrive.

Or you could buy an usb-c stick.

Bought this one to use with a nexus 5x and windows PC: https://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-Ultra-Flash-Drive-Connector/dp/B00V62XBY8

I've found it to be really nice. I would really go with such a dual one. One of the main functions for me at least is still transferring files between different computers, so usb a is still really attractive.

CES 2016 starts on Tuesday, I think you can expect announcements of a wide range of USB-C peripherals.

Not sure who uses MP3 players anymore, but phones are starting to adopt it. And there are already tons of thumb drives available.

I just tried to find it again, and it looks like I may have seen a MicroUSB one, not USB C. The equivalent SanDisk USB C looks to be more expensive for a smaller size.

No it's a memory stick with both USB C and full size ISB plugs on.

Makes it easy to transfer files from a USB C equipped to a non USB C device without needing separate dongles. One stick to use with any device.

Might work. I know that it needs to be OTG capable, like this model https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Type-C-Smartphones-Tablets-SDDDC-032G-G46/dp/B00V62XBY8

u/Ramacher · 1 pointr/nexus5x

Yes it does. See my post here where I got my 500gb portable ssd to work with a USB C - C cable.

Also there's this USB C thumbdrive that works on our phones. Isn't that OTG?

Edit: this is not the first post I've read of people having difficulty with OTG. I'm sure the issue is with the micro USB and USB C adapter. Maybe it'll work if you find a USB C to female USB A?
