I used to recommend E-Prance Mini 0803 or 0805 but it looks like they're not making them anymore. They're great little guys that you could hide behind the mirror and they were available under $100. These days if you're trying to spend under $100 I'd say trying this one.

Some other general rules for dash cams that you should follow:

• Make sure that it has motion detection so that it saves/locks clips when you get into an accident or whatever.
  
  
• Make sure that it has a capacitor instead of a battery. A parked car in Los Angeles summer heat will get extremely hot and destroy a lithium ion battery. Meanwhile a capacitor will work fine. Dashcams with capacitors are generally made to withstand heat better than those without, they're made with this use case basically.
  
  
• If they don't have internal memory, make sure to get a high endurance memory card made for security purposes like this. A regular memory card will be dead within a year... All flash NAND has a certain number of writes before it's effectively useless, and stand SD cards can't withstand the constant writes of a dash cam.

Was a beta tester for this unit. I love mine, but my daily is the DezlCam. (trucking gps, dashcam combo)

I will warn you about large SD cards tho. Having more footage isnt always best. Remember, if its on the card, it can be used against you. Even if the incident isnt your fault. (think driving history, habits, etc)

I -HIGHLY- recommend getting a High Endurance card from Sandisk

And dont leave saved footage on ANY card for long periods of time. The more locked data on a card, the less the camera has to write to, meaning it rewrites a smaller area much more often, wearing out the card.

A high endurance memory card is recommended for dash cams & security cams; they're manufactured to withstand the constant writing and re-writing to the card

It is a popular belief that SanDisk Ultra is not a good choice. I have no idea whether it's really true or not, but from experience a 64GB Sandisk Ultra card in one of my dash cams have been running like a clockwork for the past year and a half. That said, if you don't mind spending an extra buck then I wouldn't risk it and get a High Endurance card. By the way even Sandisk has one.

I noticed you said Lorries. Are you from the UK? Because it might not be worth the extra to go for some brands over others if they're harder to get or more expensive. The ones I listed are generally considered to be reliable. I think Transcend is seen as tops, I use Adata Premier Pro because they're easier to get at a reasonable price here in Canada.


Edit: looks like the best price currently on AMZ UK is the Sandisk 32GB Video Monitoring card at £16, Amazon Link. Followed by Adata Premier Pro at £26 - Amazon Link. I honestly don't know if there's a benefit to one over the other since they're both endurance cards. YMMV with any card.


I'd give some of those a try and see how it goes. Also maybe consider setting your cams to 720p since your cards will last longer (and record for longer on the same card). or If you have 1440p cam try 1080p mode.

Not a solution to your current predicament, but... get a dash cam.

They are about $50 on Amazon, and in this case would have helped a ton because you would have not only had the bus number, but proof of what happened in the accident.

Edit: Also go for the SanDisk High Endurance SD card for it.

I purchased this one several months ago and haven't had any issues. I did initially have problems with it rebooting, but after I reformatted and changed the default allocation size all was well.

I've been using this since the beginning of the year. Never had a "too slow" message or failure to work correctly. 🤷‍♂️

Thanks for the clarification. Since I have a backup of my Zee S2 Config and a backup of my zwave controller, if my SD card failed like yours did, I should be able to restore to a new one?

I would recommend 32gb, and make sure it’s made for video surveillance since it overwrites data constantly. It’s a little more expensive than a normal one, but the normal one would eventually stop recording videos and become corrupted. I will post the link to the one I have below.

The dash cam’s software will loop the videos and delete the oldest one automatically. There’s also a button to “lock” the video so if you’re ever in an accident (or catch crazy stuff you want to show family and friends) you can lock the video such prevents it from being overwritten.

You can link the app through your phone using WiF, but the download speed to your phone will be VERY slow. I usually take the SD card out and connect it to my computer with the adaptor that it comes with.

I can’t stress enough about buying the special type of SD card like above. I made the mistake on cheaping our 4 years ago (SD cards were a lot more money than now) and one day I caught a hit and run and read out the license plate. When I went to view it on my computer, my video wouldn’t open because the SD card was worn out from overwriting so much. Make sure you buy and SD card which is meant to be constantly overwritten!

Can't remember if it did, but after a Sandisk Extreme died in the dashcam in the wife's car, I went and bought a Sandisk Endurance card as they're designed for the continuous write/overwrite of a dashcam.

You do NOT want to be in a smash, think "oh it's OK, my dashcam will prove it wasn't my fault" and realise the card has been dead for the last month!

Edit: Download the app onto the kids tablet and let them see the footage from the camera in real time. Pretty cool.

I don't know of any controllers that allow you to connect an external hard drive as a storage device, and I don't think it's possible to make a hard drive look like a micro-SD card. It was possible with Compact Flash, since that used the old ATA (PATA) interface.

You could try a high-endurance SD card.

Hey just a heads up, you should probably get a high endurance SD card like this. Since the card is written to continuously, it likes to burn SD cards out. Some people have luck with the non endurance, but it seems the endurance ones last longer.
