"resulting in a dramatically higher quality sound than a traditional MP3 player"

BS.

Most people will have a very hard time distinguishing this from a 320kbps mp3 file played on something like the Sansa Clip. Stop trying to make your article more interesting and relevant by wildly exaggerating/lying about the facts.
The sound quality IS probably higher, but not dramatically so. Not even close.

The reason this will fail is not because there isn't a market for it, but because that market is already filled by something else. A player that plays FLAC, has a high quality DAC and amp, can be upgraded to 136Gb, and it costs $30.

Use the money you save by not buying the Pono on better headphones and you're much better off.

Yikes thats a bummer. Sorry that happened. Check with your insurance as they may cover the theft.

A suggestion though. They make very good, very cheap MP3 players now that are not iPods. Therefore, they do not have the theft value of iPods either and are a low target. They do not play nice with iTunes but you also wont be that upset if it gets stolen, lost, or put in the wash (which mine survived).

You can always expand the memory on these as well with the purchase of a Micro SD card to hold a ton of songs. If you have any questions about them let me know.

Hardware wallet absolutely needs screen to show what transaction is being signed.

I think it might be easier to adapt existing devices than to manufacture specifically for this purpose.

Say, there are cheap cell phones, they have screen and lots of processing power, so it might be possible to make a custom firmware which implements bitcoin stuff in a secure way.

It might be hard to make sure that it is actually secure (as it might be using bits from vendor's firmware), but there will be no problems with manufacturing.

Alternative approach: MP3 player like SanDisk Sansa Clip Zip. $30 in Amazon. Add Bitcoin signing functions to Rockbox open source firmware.

I've got the regular Sansa Clip Zip - here.

I used a SanDisk Ultra 32GB MicroSDHC Class 10 UHS Memory Card without issue for a year.

Sansa Clip Zip. (Amazon) They're a bit too small physically, imo, but they come with 4gb or 8gb integrated storage, which is expandable with microSD. You just drop music onto it from the filesystem. It doesn't support video podcasts, afaik. They start at $40, with the 8gb being $10 more.

It's also compatible with Rockbox, a super-customizable alternate firmware for portable music players.

This! I have this little guy and I shamelessly just clip it onto my waistband.

I listen to audiobooks when I'm stuck on the treadmill. I use MortPlayer Audio Books on my Android device and am pretty happy with it. On the rare occasion I listen to one on an outdoor run I like to take along my ClipZip because it weighs nothing, works well, and would cost only ~$30 to replace.

haha, just got my CLIP ZIP a few weeks ago from Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Sansa-Clip-Player-Black/dp/B005FVNGRS/ref=pd_cp_e_2
and have a 16 GB card in there. I agree, a Much more practical buy iMHO.

Very cheap, extremely rugged, comes with a strong clip mount builtin into the unit. I route my headphones under my shirt and then clip the player onto the shorts.

Bonus over the shuffle: just needs a micro USB cable to charge or transfer stuff.

They are definitely still in stock - for relatively cheap - http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Sansa-Clip-Player-Black/dp/B005FVNGRS - I just bought one last week.

Get the Zip - Install Rockbox on it - add a microSD card, go to crazy town playing doom on your mp3 player =D

I use the clip zip for audiobooks with no issue.
