The NZ dollar is lower than it's been in a few years making importing components much costlier. We're talking up to 88c high to 63c currently against the US dollar.

Even when the dollar is high, the cost of shipping plus the potential for duty would often nullify any gain or reduce them to be rather minimal. Of course, for stuff bought overseas getting some level of service can also be difficult.

Only when you find a real deal on small things (for the shipping) or things hard to get in NZ is it typically worth it, for example a 1TB SSD for $199 during Black Friday sales. As the lowest price in NZ was still $540 at the time, this was a clear win of $250 or so saved after conversion. Now it's $250, (plus shipping) - $255.43 US, or $400 NZ, and the NZ price is down to $479. Getting quite a bit narrower, but still probably worth it as it's unlikely to require duty. A top end graphics card on the other hand, it going to cost more in shipping, and also certainly attract duty.

Ultimately, I tend to buy a lot of stuff from Computerlounge.co.nz who have amazing service, typically great prices. These are my thoughts:

  • Do you have a machine that works for you right now? If you do, I'd be really tempted to wait a month or two to order, for them to get the issues worked out manufacturing the 15". Just my 2 cents, I realize it's annoying advice lol.
  • I was going to say you don't need to pay extra for the processor, but then I realized it's i5 to i7, I can see doing that.
  • Memory is good, 16gb is the "never need to upgrade" point.
  • I've had 2 drives before, and I HATE it. Every time I run across a config like that it's a constant pain in the ass. One of the drives always gets filled up, or I reinstall the software and it loses track of the second drive (happened on my dad's computer), etc. I will never do that again. I ordered the cheapest base drive, and a 1gb sandisk for $250 from amazon -

    On the screen size, lol that sounds fine with me. Personally, I debated between 15" and 17". I don't really find a "real" difference in portability, I've been using a 17" for several years now. It's mostly just that the 15" looks cooler when I'm using it, the 17" looks a little big to use and carry around. I couldn't convince myself I wouldn't miss the screen size though, and I wanted to be able to use it in as wide a variety of situations as possible, so I went with the 17".

    Also went with the 4k display, but I won't argue that one. :D

My remarks:

  • The V300 is a scam, don't buy it. It is absolutely okay to go with cheaper and slower SSDs, but there are better and honest options. I'd also keep the amount of drives down, a single 1TB SSD can easily replace the smaller drive.
  • I'm not sure what is needed for digital drawing, but for gaming you do not need a i7 6700K nor to overclock your processor
  • Thermal paste is included with those coolers
  • the PSU is overdimensioned
  • Given the budget, I'd go with a Fury over the R9 390 if 1440p is the goal. For 1080p the R9 390 is enough.

I've been eyeing this drive for two months. I'm upgrading from a RAID 1 with 2x WD Black 1TB (2010) @ 5400 RPMs. It'll be my 'storage/games' drive, not my OS drive, which I'm already upgrading to an 850 EVO 250 GB.

An alternative I've been watching is the Sandisk Ultra II 960 GB. I have a feeling the only difference I'm going to see between the 850 EVO and the Sandisk Ultra II is in a numbered benchmark.

No one knows failure rates upon release. The seagate 3tb hdd thing came to light with backblazes statistical analysis, not because people knew they were "plagued with high failure rates upon release" - companies dont release failure rates, and people largely go with the balance of reviews.

The amazon reviews are largely positive, and reviews in general are biased towards people who have problems (they're most likely to leave reviews).

If you are just looking to play OverWatch this is overkill, but if you're looking to play other games and be prepared for the future you will be set for a while.

You can save on the SSD with this.

I would recommend starting with just 8GB of that RAM, you can always get more later if you want.

If you're only interested in playing OverWatch you can go with the i5-6500k.

Also, what you know that monitor will support up to 144 fps right?

1TB drives are down to $250 now But personally I would keep the games on the 1TB drive you currently have. the boost in speed wont be ground breaking for in game loading times. GTAV still takes forever to load even on a SSD. up to you though, I was considering buying a larger SSD for that reason but its certainly not a gaming load time reduction worth an extra $200 unless you have extra money burning a hole in your pocket. IMO the best setup is a high quality 120GB+ SSD for OS and a reliable 1TB+ secondary drive for files.

The 850 is one of the top drives for TLC-memory SSDs. Usually, the read/write speeds tend to decrease as price lowers. To get better performance, most TLC SSDs have a buffer cache to get better read/write speeds. The difference is between SSDs, in my opinion, is pretty much unnoticeable is normal use. The jump from mechanical HDD is what matters.

Some good entry-level SSDs are the ADATA SP550, Transcend 370 or Sandisk Ultra II and a direct competitor to the 850 EVO, the Crucial MX200

If you want good value for space and performance, the MyDigitalSSD BP5e offers that.

I wouldnt go smaller than 500. A 250 is 94. So you get 3 times the storage for $100. A 500GB SSD is $150. For the extra $50 get the 750GB.

I probably wouldnt buy anything but a Samsung Evo 850, MX200/MX300 or one of the Sandisks.

Hardware

The Hard Drive Caddy I used was just a cheap Chinese component that is nothing more than a SATA pass-through and shaped like a laptop Optical Disk Drive, there was nothing particularly special about the model I chose other than that they were based in Australia so the shipping was fast and cheap - but you can find other models. They're all pretty much identical. The drive doesn't pop out like a disk tray, if anyone was curious.

The SSD on the other hand, was shipped out by Amazon US. The model is obvious from the picture, it cost about £165 (US$250 / AU$335) with shipping included. A decent price considering that I wouldn't go any less than 1TB capacity and is ranked fairly highly in SSD comparison charts.

Software

To create Symbolic Links and NTFS Junctions I use Link Shell Extender, a utility I highly recommend for people with SSDs. There are some notable limitations on what SymLinks and Junctions can do. In particular any Microsoft installer absolutely fucking detests them, so you can't just create a junction for your entire Program Files folder.

Here is what things look like after, the folder on the left is the Junction, but if you open it it looks like it's just a real folder in that drive. However the folder on the left is the REAL folder.

I say yes! Now is a good time to do that.

But, I suggest getting a much cheaper SSD for your mass storage. You have the EVO with your OS on it, I say get the cheapest, reputable 1tb you can find.

Your storage setup is a bit worrying. Drives above 2GB have dramatically higher fail rates. Rather than the 500 gb 850 pro wait for a 960 GB Sandisk to be on sale for £140 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00M8ABHVQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) as it has been a few times in the past. Also I would go 2x2TB drives and personally I would not raid them since all high speed applications would be on the SSDs you don't need the extra raid 0 performance and you get the reliability of being able to keep your most important files on both disks (as well as online backup).
