My favorite TSA moment was when they confiscated my wallet survival tool, because it had a 'knife'. Apparently I could kill everyone on the plane with it. Meanwhile the TSA is perfectly ok with knitting needles, because there's no way you could ever stab anyone with those right?

I also struggle with finding gifts for my dad. Does he like to grill/BBQ? Maybe you can can get a set of grill utensils or I saw some cooking mats for a grill on Amazon. Or you could get a set of knives, a gift card to a restaurant, one of those survival pocket tools, a baseball cap of one of his favorite sport teams, a new wallet or phone case/wallet combo, fancy hot sauce or BBQ sauce, etc. Good luck!

It all depends on what the screener allows. I carried this credit card multitool on flights for years. Then a screener rejected it, so I travel with it in my luggage. At $5, it might be worth the gamble.
Some, like the wallet ninja claim to be TSA approved, but still have a sharp corner that can cut tape.
