Ferrocerium rod, not magnesium. magnesium fire starters have a ferrocerium rod embedded in a small block of magnesium. The user shaves off small flakes of magnesium with a knife, then strikes the rod to produce a spark and ignite the flakes. The flakes burn extremely hot, allowing larger tinder to be readily ignited.

OP's doesn't have the magnesium bar. The user would need finer tinder to catch the spark from the ferrocerium rod.

Here is a great little stove. It's a Chinese whisperlight, but I've been using it quite a bit over the past 2 years and have no complaints whatsoever. Also super cheap, which gives you more money to play with.

The Sawyer mini squeeze is also a great item to have. You should have $20-25 left after these two items.

Here's a decent magnesium fire starter for cheap as well.

With these items, all essential/survival items, you should have about $15-20 to play with. Maybe some socks?

Multipurpose waterproof match case. I prefer this case because it's not much bigger than other waterproof cases, but has other stuff built into it. I put waterproof matches in it along with the striker strip from the package. The whistle is good for signaling. The other functions are marginal, so I supplement them with the actual things, which consist of a signal mirror, lensatic compass, and emergency fire starter.

A stove and solid fuel. I was pretty impressed with this particular one when I received it. It's stainless steel, well constructed, and you can store four fuel tabs inside of it.

A multitool and a fixed-blade knife. I don't have either of these specific models, but they seem pretty decent.

A folding shovel. These are good for burying waste, helping a car gain traction in the winter, etc.

A self-adhesive bandage. This is a three-pack. The single one cost $4 locally. Buy this one and leave the other two in your medicine cabinet. Wrap the remaining one around a piece of cardboard and put it in your emergency pack.

Disposable antibacterial wipes.

Antimicrobial silver gel. Like Neosporin, but better. Stays on a wound for multiple days without covering, and the colloidal silver is a strong antimicrobial agent. See the oligodynamic effect.

Dust masks. This is for a 50-pack, but for half the price, you only get 10 at a local store. These help prevent you from spreading germs if you're sick, and keep you from inhaling macroscopic particles if you're in a dusty/dirty area.

QuikClot sponge bandage. This helps to stop bleeding from major injuries. Along with an Israeli battle dressing you have two great ways to help stem major bleeding, separately or combined.

Local anesthetic for stings. Good for numbing injuries other than stings, too.

Sterile pads, 4” x 4”.

Sunscreen.

Cigarette-adapter power inverter. Good for charging small electronics.

Hand warmers.

Work gloves and watchcap.

All of the following are probably best bought in stores or scrounged up around the house:

Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, all with obvious uses.

Aspirin, for heart attacks and pain, ibuprofen for pain, anti-histamine for allergic reactions, and Imodium or off-brand equivalent for diarrhea. I can't stress having Imodium enough. Having cramps and shits can render you unable to do anything for long periods of time, even more so than other ailments.

A disposable razor can be used to shave to keep up appearances, or to shave the area around a wound for better bandaging.

Maxi pads and tampons can be used as intended as well as to prevent bleeding from wounds.

Toilet paper. Wrap it around a piece of cardboard to save space.

Bandanas or an old shirt can be used to make a sling, protect yourself from the sun, filter macroscopic particles out of water, filter dirty/dusty air, etc.

Hot chocolate with caffeine added can be used to help stay alert.

Lighters are a must-have to start a fire.

I also have a Ziploc bag containing about ten cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly. They're great firestarters.

Cash. Keep various bills and coins in an amount that you think is suitable for emergencies.

Maps. Carry folding maps of your area, state, and surrounding states.

I think that covers everything that I have. There's a lot of redundancy, but it all fits in my bag, so I'm happy with it. I'm definitely interested in hearing thoughts as to what can be added or changed.

u/a_very_stupid_guy · 3 pointsr/Bushcraft

My thoughts are this: A full tang knife will be more durable and more apt towards any bushcrafting (Becker BK2 is, Moras are 3/4 tang). Don't think that a knife is an axe. Nor a machete. There's "halfway" blades, but they're jacks of all trades. IE: Kukri [knife/machete].

Granted, I'm just a goof who tinkers with his stuff when I go out in the woods.

Those two knives blow the MORA lineup away, as they should at their pricepoint. I think they'd be great, just the value of the Mora and the extent I'd need them for is just fine for me.

edit: Just to mention, I'm a cheapo. My firesteel is this from amazon lol. Works well enough for me.

Exactly! From the beginning of this I have said that it NEVER hurts to be ready for the worst. Where I live we get a lot of earth quakes and I am sure within my life we'll get a nasty one. Our building codes are VERY strict and I don't fear that my place will tip over, but the power grid in the US is VERY old and in need of repair badly.

We lost power out here two years ago over about 2 days and people were freaked out. What happens when something really bad happens and it's a week or two weeks with no power, no gas, the food starts dwindling and people are running around like crazy trying to get food to eat.

I'll have my MRE's not the best food in the world, but damn I won't starve to death. I think about prepping hardly ever and I need to get my self re situated and make sure I have everything back together again. I even made a list here for people who were new to prepping. My list is far from a complete list of things one would like to have, but it has the essentials.

My personal Kit:

Item| Cost | Unit

Water | $1.00 | 1 Gallon / person / day
DYI Meals Ready to Eat | $3.50 | Per Unit

The fact of the matter is that the subreddit for the most part seems to be under the illusion that if you don't live in West Africa you are 100% safe, which is a dangerous thought to have.

As /u/snorgsniffer said yesterday

>When confronted with dire circumstances beyond their control, humans predictably engage in one of the following behaviors:

> Denial
>
Delusion
> Distraction
>
Dismissal
> * Drugs / Drink (altered state of consciousness)

>All of those things result in still another "D"... delay
It's clear that both the victims and potential responders are engaging in "D behaviors" at this time.

>My point? It is almost impossible to change someone's mind using logical argument when their conclusion is an irrational, emotional one. They just burrow deeper into their chosen coping behavior when forced to look even more closely at the thing which frightened them so badly in the first place.

>Though not directly news related, I think understanding the psychological underpinnings of the outbreak is important when interpreting the nuts & bolts side of it. This sub seems to me like a good place to see it discussed. There are some really bright people here.

A lot of people are giving voice to their coping mechanisms of denial to make themselves feel better. I don't think their attitude will change until the numbers reach upwards of 50,000 and the people start fleeing and spreading this crap all over the globe.

hope I'm not too late buttttt this would be nice but it's about $1 over whomp whomp. Either way, great contest!

u/kehendrix · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Located in my default WL this $5ish Magnesium Fire Starter would be handy in the event of the inevitable nuclear/zombie apocalypse or simply a tool to fuel my ever growing desire to become a pyromancer.

"pay attention in class!"

u/cheesaye · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I thought it would be fun to have for camping and just messing around. Never did I know a few days after when a contest on reddit would the world be overrun by zombies. We all thought it was just for tv and movies. No one was prepared for what was about to happen...except for, of course, the stars of American Preppers. But we'll save their story for another time.

I am up in a tree write now waiting for a group of walkers to stumble on by me. My all of my belonging are in a pack about a 100 yards away, laying on the ground. All of my belongings except one. A random internet stranger bought me a magnesium fire starter just for fun. Now it never leaves my side, it is what will keep me warm in the coming winter.

I hope they are surviving.

  1. Mustaches for Old Posh Englishman (Teacher wish list)

  2. SAFETY folfable pink knife for never seen in public. Not because it's embarrassing, but because I don't want people to know I have it! It makes me weaker! (Default wish list)

  3. I ACTUALLY HAVE PENISES ON MY WISH LIST! They're bull penis chew toys, which are really good chew toys for dogs. =) (Default with list]

  5. Achieve a goal. ANY and ALL of the books (or supplies) on my Teacher wish list! Used, penny plus shipping. I instituted Free Reading Fridays in my English 12 class (seniors), and we need some nitty gritty urban literature, because my students are low-income urban students with bad home lives and horrifying stories that help them relate to the books on my list. One of my students, Caleb, wants to do his scifi project on the Deadspace comics. I got him the first one already. There are 4 more.

  6. I have a fire starter on my wish list!!! (Default wish list) ADD ON ITEM.

    Thanks for the contest! <3!

  10. Instant fire starter. One way to get rid of the undead is to burn them to ashes and this spiffy thing will light you a fire in a jiffy.
  11. This sewing machine. I've always wanted to make my own clothes because there aren't enough cute US styles. Most fashions these days are more sexy than sweet. I'd make a boutique for feminine, cute, Lolita, Gyaru, and Gothic styles. But first I'd have to learn how to sew, haha.

Cards Against Humanity and this. I'm envisioning a game of CAH so horrid it brings about the Apocalypse, in which case my add-on item might come in handy. Thanks for doing this contest, and of course, Schmad on my add on.

u/revmamacrystal · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

As came up earlier this week in the daily, my Father was a Sargent in the Air Force at the end of the Korean war. He was stationed in Haikaido Japan in an underground bunker, listening. (Yes, my Dad was nearly 40 when they had me- if you're doing the math and wondering why he's not my Grandfather).

Before the Goddamned Marines get all of the credit

Honestly, it's fine if someone else wins. I feel so much for the current people serving. Every military wedding I do (and I did A LOT during Iraq) I thank them for serving and I really mean it. I don't have the stones for military life, though two of my siblings did (Air force and Navy).

There is this fire starter thingie I've liked

u/schannoman · 1 pointr/Survival

One of these

I guess flint might not be the best word, I use "flint+steel" for a lot of the striker starters. I suppose I should stop that

u/twonicorn · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

That sounds awesome. I really like the idea of like, self-sufficiency, being able to live without modern conveniences. My kid asked me one time "Do you ever think about if you were stranded on an island and had to like, rebuild society?" and I was like..."omg all the time." :)

Also, I thought was I got you was this? So idk if I'm just confused or what.

For /u/Morthy

  • Posh Englishmen drink tea, right? (Stupid add-ons WL)

  • I have little shame when it comes to being ridiculous in public, but I wouldn't be seen wearing only these in public. (NSFWishlist)

  • cough This looks phallic. (NSFWishlist)

    For /u/Akelelie

  • How about a super NERDY item?! ($5+)

  • This would help me identify birds! It's intended for a person who has the bird in hand, but it's the only book I know of that includes such great details, especially in juvenile birds, which other books/apps lack. (Yeah right! $50+)

  • When you have fire, you have hope! (Stupid add-ons.)

Babe, the sheep pig
Hi

u/Chris770 · 1 pointr/askgaybros

They're both things you can get at just about any sporting goods store. The one I got my friend was a Nitecore, you can find it here on Amazon.

If you want to go for economy, here's a combo magnesium fire starter and compass with a whistle. If you prefer, you can get a magnesium fire starter separately, they don't cost much.

Nobody who's going to be travelling off the beaten path anywhere should ever be without either of these things.

u/sillygirlsarah · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

See, here's the most important key item to having fun, which is also in my list.

This little firestarter holds the secret ingrediant to that campfire confection we call s'mores. Sure, you can make a smore at home, shove everything on a plate in a microwave for a few seconds or if you have a BBQ, just turn that sucker on and go for gold.

But it's not the same. It's the smoke. It instills in the marshmallow as you turn it //just// so, so that you can have a perfectly golden cylinder of sugar that is immediately slid between graham and chocolate wherein the heat from the marshmallow makes the chocolate just soft enough.

It holds the secret to a well burned hot dog on a stick, kept a little too close to the coals. Boils water for hot cocoa. Eggs and bacon if you are so brave, or to help fry up a fresh caught fish.

It's essential for sitting on logs and chairs around the fire with blankets on your shoulder as you tell stories and laugh.

It's an essential part of a cub scouts camping gear which I will soon have to start gathering to prep him for overnight camping, and to attempt to camp somewhere other than our own yard for the first time as a family.

:fist bumps for your major camping trip: You go, you have fantastic family fun time! Make sure you bring your camera's :D

u/RedDelibird · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon
  1. I actually plan to camp around the world as part of my bucket list.

  2. Always useful as a back-up firestarter

  3. If you kill me, how will I enjoy the outdoors?
u/archlich · 1 pointr/gaming

This is why it's important to get the ones with a big huge chunk of magnesium on the underside. Shave off a small mountain of that stuff, throw spark into it, raging fire.

u/sheisaeval · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

this fire starter is pretty cool, and we like to go camping

http://www.amazon.com/SE-FS374-Magnesium-Fire-Starter/dp/B0010O748Q/ref=reg_hu-rd_add_1_dp

I'm a Girl Scout volunteer who teaches fire safety and stuff, so obviously, I've wanted this for a while.

It's difficult to find a more creative way it would help me survive than to start fire, but I could also use it as a mini-surfboard to surf on while I fish, and also to swim with the turtles because turtles are awesome.

u/TheRambleMammal · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon
u/MaarkNuutt · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

It's a tie between Skeletor and Front-Butt. Both can be applied to almost any black card.

Example: "Maybe she's born with it. Maybe it's Skeletor."

"Instead of coal, Santa now gives bad children Front-Butt"

I could really use this!
