Not really a rumor, that is what the original Birds were, and many still are.
They've also rolled out new scooters designed by Segway, instead of Xiaomi. Seems like the plan is for these to eventually replace the Xiaomi ones.

You can also buy your own electric scooter (presumably a little easier to ride because of the handlebars), but they're illegal in New York so I don't know how much grief you'd wind up getting from NYPD for riding one.
