SEIKO SARB 033

Price: $330

Movement: Seiko 6R15, Automatic

Style: Dress

Size: 37mm (without crown)

Link: Amazon Page

Image: link

Description: The exquisite Seiko SARB033 is powered by the premium Seiko 6R15 caliber self-winding movement that can also be hand wound and hacked. It is the same caliber that powers most of the Seiko Prospex line of watches. The movement has a generous 50 hour power reserve. The case has a fine brushed finish and the black dial sports luminous hands and silvertone hour markers. A date display is shown at the 3 o'clock position. The stainless steel bracelet has a deployant clasp with a dual push-button release. A scratch resistant sapphire crystal is used along with an exhibition back that allows you to view the movement in action. Water resistant 100 meters. This is definitely a luxury range watch that is available at an affordable price. An excellent timepiece for sure.

Probably the SARB033. I'd buy a leather strap (not a nato) for dress settings and use the provided steel strap for business settings. I feel that the watch face is versatile enough to fit both business and dress settings. The watch hands are a little too dressy but i think it'll work in a workplace setting.

I honestly think that a Quartz watch would be better in the long run but I'm a fan of Automatics so there's that.

If not the SARB, then I'd probably get a [Hamilton Khaki King](http://www.jomashop.com/hamilton-mens-watch-h64455533.html?utm_source=googleproduct&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=googleproductsearch&pt_source=googleads&pt_medium=cpc&pt_campaign=(ROI). I think it's versatile enough for most business and dress settings as it is. But i like a little variation so i wouldn't splurge on the Hamilton if it means i can't get a second band for it.

Ok... lets go piece by piece.

My first responsability it to tell you my personal opinion of tag heuer so you can put everything i put under in to context...
Tag Heuer is junk, they are horrible overpriced junk thats been ruined by LVMH in favor of a horrible brand like Hublot.

But lets go by parts,

The Tag Heuer Calibre 5 was originaly a 2824 Elaborate grade (more on grades Here)

But since Eta is now cutting off supply to non swatchgroup the Calibre 5 is now a Sellita SW200 which is a Drop in replacement for the 2824 thats very similar but has a extra jewel, some people they they are worst, some say they are the same... they havent been on the market long enough to make a decent assesment, theyonly been widly used for 3-4 years and Oris was the first major swiss manufacturer to put them in to mass production watches.

The fact that they are using an internal reference Such as Calibre 5 and using 2 different calibres as Calibre 5 without telling you which it is and the only modification done to the movement is rotor engraving is kind of disturbing becuase you dont know which you have until you crack open the watch.

Now there have been questions about the quality of the components used by Tag Heuer lately, softer case steel, plastic spacers, Little details that make you think that LVMH is cutting corners.

Theres also been questions about Servicing, Latery there have been reports that TH has been basicaly just tossing out the old movement and putting in a new one instead of bothering with servicing the movement, its something i find disturbing becuase the watchmaker skill and service quality required to do that instead of properly taking the movement apart,

Servicing a Tag at LVMH will probobly run you around 250 bucks and according to Tag´s own website the recommend a 2 year service period and a yearly waterproofing test that probobly runs around 50 bucks (most watchmakers recommend between 3 and 5, and omega is currently even saying that Coaxials can go for 10 years, as for the waterproofing, its only recommended yearly if you regularly dive with it)

Just to give you an idea, I serviced my Seiko Stargate II with a 4R36 movement for under 50 euros and my Seiko 8R28 Ananta modular chronograph which is a PAIN to service for 185 euros

Tag Heuer is one of those brands that people are drawn to when they start with watches, and the more they learn the more they avoid, Tag Heuer has a lot of interesting watches, the TH-02 Tourbillon, the Monaco V4, the Microtimer... but those are "runway models" and what you want to buy is the equivalent of a Polo shirt with a Ralph Lauren polo symbol on it. its a generic low end model that they make without any horological value just for cash.

Now, If you still want the carrera... i recommend you get the twin time. Its more or less the same price but it carries a 2893 movement with a GMT complication, atleast you´re getting a bit more for your money

http://www.amazon.com/TAG-Heuer-WAR2010-BA0723-Carrera-Automatic/dp/B00J8B747E/ref=sr_1_10?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1457259629&sr=1-10&nodeID=7141123011&keywords=Tag+heuer+carrera

but consider its 1800 dollars.

And 320 dollars buys you this
http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-MECHANICAL-SARB033-Wrist-Watch/dp/B001AE9XRQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457259722&sr=8-1&keywords=SARB033

Tag Heuer is a subcidiary of a faceless fashion conglomerate which makes generic products using movements sourced from an external contractor, If you want something made internaly by Tag Heuer you have to go to a Calibre 1887 Carrera which is 3k+ dollars and is actually manufactued based on a design bought from Seiko of all people...
http://www.amazon.com/TAG-Heuer-CAR2A10-FC6235-Stainless-Automatic/dp/B00DG9T2F6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1457259876&sr=8-3&keywords=calibre+1887

Seiko is a 130+ year old Family owned company, the Current CEO Shinji Hattori is the great grandson of the founder, Kintaro hattori, They are the tipical japanese conglomerate so they try to make everything in house, meaning they even make their own lume and lubricants... they even grow their own quartz crystals for their quartz watches, the Seiko 6R15 is the equivalent of the Eta 2824 but easyer and cheaper to service since seiko actually sells parts to 3rd party repair shops.

So If you asked be between a Seiko Sarb033 and a Tag Heuer Calibre 5, especialy when one costs 300 bucks and the other costs 1800 bucks ?

The Seiko hands down, its better made, the movements are equivalent to each other, and Seiko right now is a much better watchmaker then Tag Heuer.

SARB033 The watch in question, it's not super nice, but my father has never spent money on accessories or jewelry and he's not a fan of the idea for work.

Seiko SARB033

Price: $345.00 [Amazon]

Movement: Automatic, Seiko 6R15

Style: Dress. Sports. Sports-elgance. Daily-wearer.

Size: 38mm w/o crown

Link: Amazon, Seiya

Description: Seiko needs no introduction, and this is one of the most popular Seiko watches in this range. The whole SARB line is loved across the internet for the value they present in this price range, and the SARB033 perhaps most-so. It is one of the most affordable SARBs and offers a clean, classic style and Seiko's in-house calibre 6R15 with hacking and hand-winding. The whole SARB line has, until recently, been exclusive to the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM).

The watch comes on a comfortable steel band, and has a display caseback. The face is black with applied luminous hour markers and dauphine hands, also lumed. The lume isn't incredibly strong, but works fine. The watch also has a date function. Crystal is Sapphire, flat, and quite scratch resistant.

I have owned this watch and absolutely loved it. It's a go anywhere watch with a real dressy feel. An excellent mechanical starter in the sub-$500 range with office and casual appeal.

u/mcadamsandwich · 6 pointsr/malefashionadvice

You'll have better luck searching around r/watches.

I'll recommend the Seiko SARB033. You can pick up a leather strap for under $100 USD.

u/KidneyLand · 6 pointsr/Watches

Everyone on this subreddit recommends to steer clear of fashion watches, but I like to recommend that you get a watch that YOU WILL ENJOY AND LIKE. You will ultimately be the one who will be wearing it anyways, so why not get that Mickey Mouse watch you been eyeing?

But as a fan of horology, I'd recommend these watches that have similar designs to what you linked above.

Not exactly sure where to find a panda styled chronograph with time indicators at the 12 and 6 area, but here is one from Seagull. I'm personally not a fan of the Seagull brand. Mechanical movement

Little more than 300, but it's a fan favorite among this community. It also comes with an automatic movement

What watches does he have? What type of watch do you want - sport, dress, dive, aviator? Where is he going to wear it? How much can you spend?

This is a very cool thing you're doing - happy birthday to you and your brother.
I'm a bit of a watch nut and generally go for automatic watches, so that's what I'll stick to here....unfortunately none of them are as trendy as the larger Hugo you've mentioned. I'm not as familiar with the trendier stuff...but I can offer some input.
In that price range, I normally recommend Seiko. Their dive watches are pretty solid (http://amzn.to/1wX9UCd) and right in your range, but if you're looking for something a bit dressier the SARB line has some great pieces....although a bit higher than you mentioned - http://amzn.to/1tteaIk. The Seiko movement isn't as well known as the Swiss movements, but it's great all the same. For the money, they're hard to beat.
Going a bit cheaper, you can look at the Chinese made watches. Sea-Gull has some good looking ones. I've actually had one for a bit, but the quality wasn't the same and I ended up letting it go. The materials aren't as solid and the fit and finish isn't the same as Swiss or a Seiko. At the same time, you get a whole lot more shoved in the watch for quite at a much lower price point. For instance - a Chinese-made Sea-gull tourbillon starts at $4000ish, while a Swiss-made one will start at....$35000. That said - this is an attractive sea-gull: http://bit.ly/1wUHdab; and here is a dressier one: http://bit.ly/1yOyFks
Another option is to go vintage. You can get some cool watches at great prices - Omega, Jaeger Le-Coultre, Girard-Perregeaux. While I generally wouldn't recommend eBay due to the amount of fraud you'll find, here's a good looking Seamaster currently for sale - http://ebay.to/1zqa1tC. A more reliable source for used watches is http://www.watchrecon.com/. It's an aggregate of several watch fora and you can see what's currently for sale.
Best of luck in your search.

u/colonelpan1c · 4 pointsr/Watches

You're on r/watches, so answer is going to be Seiko. I tend to agree in this case. Fossil is known for making oversized, overpriced, mediocre fashion watches. Seiko has been a quality watch and clock manufacturer since forever. The citizen is nice too, but I'm not a huge fan of the dial setup.

If you're willing to save up longer and are interested in mechanical watches, the Seiko SARB033 would be a really fantastic option, and offers a lot of value at its price.

At a lower price point, the Seiko SNE039 is an affordable quartz solar watch that scratches the same itch.

I'd suggest this citizen as well.

I mean, buy what you like, it's your money and your watch. But if I was going for that style, I'd pick from these. I can't say enough good things about the Seiko SAR series though.

u/nautimike · 4 pointsr/Watches

Under $500, Seiko SARB033.

Over $500? Grand Seiko Mechanical Hi-Beat...well over $500.

My recomendation is purchase an SKX007, and put a Super Oyster bracelet on it.

Best bang for buck watch, and can be dressed way up or way down. Sporty watches are in. There is nothing more timeless and iconic (imo) than a diver and the SKX007 is a legend.

It's the move, and I'm sure somebody on here will sell you this exact watch. You'll love it.

u/ipki · 4 pointsr/Watches

Don't really know anything about the watch but it really just appears as a larger version of the sarb033.

u/super_s15 · 3 pointsr/Watches

You should try out the Seiko SARB033. It has a similar design to the Omega you listed, and there are some that can go up to 10 years without a service.

I believe that's the SCVS015, which is discontinued.

The SARB033, has a very similar look, and switching it to leather would be easy enough.

u/canadian_leprechaun · 3 pointsr/Watches

For something that is on the dressier side but still can be worn casually I have these choices (links from amazon for reference)

  1. The sarb. Just under 500$, it looks great, and has the 6r15 movement and a sapphire glass

    This is in black https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Japanese-Automatic-Stainless-Casual/dp/B001AE9XRQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1542165206&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=sarb&dpPl=1&dpID=41KkNyg6A%2BL&ref=plSrch

  2. Seiko presage, a beautiful dial, search for it on this subreddit and you'll find awesome pictures, trust me

    https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Presage-Jewel-Automatic-Watch/dp/B074KL4SP6/ref=mp_s_a_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1542165206&sr=8-9&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=sarb

My recommendation is to stay away from divers, pilot and chronographs if he wants to wear them on classier occasions. Of course a lot of people love to break the rule, which is totally fine.

But these watches can be worn to work (aren't too flashy, seiko is mostly known to watch enthusiasts anyway), have lot of color choices amd can be worn on classier occasions.

Hey. It's my 25th birthday and my brother wanted to get me a nice watch around the 500 cad budget. I wanted some opinions.

Some that I considered:

I know it's a designer brand but I really really like the design of it!
Kenneth Cole kc3981:
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B0046XXVBM/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1525747516&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=kenneth+cole+kc3981&dpPl=1&dpID=414L-7IXnML&ref=plSrch

Seiko presage:

Seiko sarb033:
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B001AE9XRQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1525746203&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=seiko+sarb&dpPl=1&dpID=41KkNyg6A%2BL&ref=plSrch

But I also loooove the NTH nacken in blue with it's ceramic glossy bezel and embedded lume and snowflake hands (I just wish the indeces were like outlined in silver or something, would have been a dream) - but that watch is on preorder right now.
(Link for the curious:
https://watchgauge.com/products/copy-of-nth-nacken-modern-blue-no-date-pre-order-v2)

Also the tissel marine diver in black is really really nice too, but that's also a hard one to order and receive quickly.

So, these are watches that I considered plus some that I like, I'd appreciate any opinions or advice :) also I don't mind homage watches (clearly), so yea.

And I already own an orient Bambino v4 (in grey and gold that's wonderful).

Thanks!!!

I've got my 21st birthday coming up and I'm looking at getting a watch for it, I'm still missing a nice watch with a metal strap so that's what I'm looking for.

The main one I've looked at so far is the Seiko Sarb033 (at the recommendation of the buying guide). I like the style of it a lot (quite a simple/minimalist design) and it's right around the right price. I was just wondering if anyone had any other similar suggestions that might be good.

Worth noting I've got fairly small wrists so a smaller watch would be nicer, and it'll largely be worn in slightly more dress-y occasions but also as a daily wear too.

Thanks a lot for any suggestions.

u/kenichimightiest · 2 pointsr/Watches

The prices are a bit inflated at the moment because it was recently discontinued. But the seiko sarb033 is pound for pound one of the best most versatile watches under 500$

Often time you'll hear people talk about the rolex explorer as "the perfect 1 watch collection" what this basically means is it can function in any circumstance. The sarb checks the same boxes. Simple black dial, sub 40mm so can work as a dress piece, 100m water resist and a metal bracelet so you can dress it down and go swimming. At first I didn't like it because it was too simple. But the simplicity of it is it's greatest strength. Pretty much the only watch you'd ever need.

u/Schrockwell · 2 pointsr/Watches

The Seiko SARB033 is a popular suggestion around here. It's a little above your price range, but you're getting a very high-quality, flexible watch. It's only 37mm so it should be good for smaller wrists. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001AE9XRQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_wSV7ybFH8JNM5

Edit: make sure you look at customers' shots. The stock photos don't do it justice.

Edit: also look at this citizen. The dial is blue but you can find it in most chain jewelry stores to at least try it on. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005MKGQMY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_gWV7ybZM4DZ4X

u/skepticaljesus · 2 pointsr/Watches

i think either are fine watches, and perfectly worthy gifts, but in my honest opinion neither strike me as "last forever family heirloom" material. The Citizen is not what I would call a timeless design and is likely to look dated at some point. The Shinola is a little more classic but... it's a cheap quartz movement in a well-designed but somewhat cheaply made case. And while there's absolutely no shame in wearing or enjoying either of these watches, neither seems like the kind of thing that will be treasured for generations either.

In the end, though, the best gifts are the ones given with thought and consideration for what the recipient might like. You love your husband, and I bet you know what he'd like. Follow your heart, engrave something thoughtful on it, and I'm sure he'll love it.

For my tastes, in this price range, if you want something stylish I'd look at a visodate, or if you want something a little plainer, try something military-inspired like this junkers or Hamilton field watch. For something a little dressier, also consider a SARB033. Also, I believe all of those watches are available in either black or white if that's a preference.

The designs of those watches are all much more classic and likely to age a bit more gracefully.

u/chanzjj · 2 pointsr/Watches

I doubt that there's any watch in your price range that matches your requirements exactly. Closest I could come up with was the Hamilton Intra-Matic, but that's a little bit above your price range, has a date function and doesn't have gold indices.

Common recommendations on this sub for dress watches at that price range are the Tissot Visodate and Seiko SARB033.

u/Californiadancenow · 2 pointsr/Watches

First suggestion:
Doesn't check all of your boxes but hear me out when I say I would get a Seiko SARB033. In my opinion, the SARB has a quality worth every penny and is a fan favorite that will look amazing for your wedding and there on.

Second suggestion:
More to your requests is orient. Orient has a lot of open heart watches under 300 dollars but I just happened to like this one and if im not mistaken, most of their movements are in-house.

Hope this helps

Wait, isn't this 37mm wide? It looks perfectly normal sized here. Are the Amazon measurements wrong?

That Certina is powered by an ETA 2824-2. Now, this is definitely the wrong forum to go against anything Seiko-related, so I'll simply say that the Seiko movement most comparable to the 2824-2 in terms of quality and reliability is the 6R15, which is found in some very popular models.

I've been looking at the SARBs for some time and it seems the SARG series is a new line on the same level. They've got identical automatic movements, sapphire, similar (high) quality of finish. Do I see the SARB033 is discounted? Ugh, that's a good deal.

Yeah that's a good point... But yeah my budget is flexible so I'm really considering the last suggestion.

Thank you for the suggestions!

Would anyone know something along the line of this Seiko SARB033 but a little cheaper?

Hello, r/watches! I'm entirely new to watches and was hoping for a couple suggestions for versatile dress-watches in the $300-$500 dollar range. Pardon me if my terminology is off.

I work as a programmer and I'd like to add a little bit of "gravitas" to my outfits. I tend to wear jeans/chinos and button downs, but sometimes I will go with jeans/tshirt combo. My shoes are either some nice sneakers or boots. Basically, I want a watch that I can wear anytime that says "Even though I'm a nerd, I have a little good taste."

I took a look at some of the popular watches on this subreddit and the one that really caught my eye was the Seiki sarb033. I love the clean, simple look and coloring of the dial and it seems like a watch you could wear with most any outfit.

I'm wondering if anyone here knows of any good watches that are similar in style and price to this watch.

TL;DR: Want a watch that will lend a bit of class to my simplistic outfits and will help me offset the "young programmer" vibe.

Sorry if this is vague or beating a dead horse!

EDIT: I don't know enough about watches (yet) to care about extra functionality or the difference in movement: I'm going mostly for aesthetic.

If you can stretch the budget a wee bit, the Seiko SARB0033 is a great choice.

I'll second the Seiko SARB thinking... [Amazon has the SARB033 for $360.] (https://www.amazon.com/Mechanical-Standard-Models-Automatic-SARB033/dp/B001AE9XRQ) which leaves plenty left over for a nice leather strap ([see here for ideas] (http://forums.watchuseek.com/f21/choosing-between-sarb033-sarb035-regarding-leather-bracelet-color-2166594.html)).

So what is the main difference between the GS and this one? Is the GS more accurate and durable? Seiko MECHANICAL SARB033 Mens Wrist Watch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001AE9XRQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_2GY3xb7BN5E0S

I'm trying to find one in a similar price range right now, my list includes:

If you want a high quality, classic looking watch, then you can't beat the Seiko SARB. Here's one in your price range

You didn't give a price range but this Seiko SARB is widely considered to be the end all be all for under $500's

There are a few other styles with different colored dials, a quick google search will bring them all up. The bang for your buck and overall quality can't be matched very easily. I have it's JDM predecessor the SCVS and I wear it as often as I can.
