Finally my time to shine.

If you are looking for a good-for-everything watch, you have a few options. If you are looking for an automaitc watch (no battery, purely mechanical) you really can't beat the SKX007. It has excellent durability, classic looks, and the lume (glow stuff on the dial) is excellent. There is no battery to die, although you may need to get it services in a decade (or get a new one). Leave it on the bracelet for a sporty everyday look that can go with a suit, to a wedding, or a funeral. Throw it on a NATO strap (how I wear my watch every day) for comfortable everyday wearing. Get different coloured straps for different things, and change it up. A new strap can make it look like a totally different watch.

If you want something that will do almost any occasion without a mechanical movement, basically any Citizen Eco-drive will do the job. I myself like the Citizen Nighthawk, although it might be because I'm a pilot. The slide rule on the outside is great for addition/division (how much to tip, how much tax, etc.) and it will tell a second time zone.

If you are looking to make a statement, there is nothing that tops the Seiko "Orange Monster". This thing is built like a tank, the utomatic movement is proven, and the lume is out of this world. It also comes as the "Black Monster" if you want to be a bit more subtle.

If you are looking for a dress watch, I would recommend the Orient "Union" as it has a durable, in-house movement and great looks.

If you are looking for something badass that will be great for nighttime, there is the Traser Code Blue. It is a very durable quartz watch designed for military operations. It has vials of tritium (hydrogen with two neutrons) and will glow without any exposure to light for at least a decade.

If you are looking for a digital watch, I would recommend either the Casio Mudman if you are looking for a large, indestructable watch (That is also allowed for space travel by NASA) or the Casio F91W which is much slimmer, but less durable.

Possibly one of the best deals in "stylish" watches is the Timex Weekender. The come in a million different colours, have an electric illumination, and are very stylish and durable.

My advice would be to get the SKX007 on the bracelet, and then grab a few NATO straps. I have had great customer service interactions with Clockwork Synergy. Their straps are of decent quality, and their service is second-to-none. If you have a little cash left over, grab the F91W for chores are hiking, or anywhere you may need a stopwatch and illuminated face (i.e. Flying).

In this price range, it's probably going to be a dive watch and most likely a Seiko or Orient. Here are a few:

As bad and overpriced of a watch as it might be, i think it would go nicely with your (awesome) ink. Keep in mind that for that price you could get a plethora of nice automatics that would probably last you a lot longer. I think this watch would look great with your tattoo and it's an awesome timepiece for the money.

I bought mine for $154 years ago, but I"ve never seen it that cheap since.

Seiko dive watches Maratac. Swiss Army. Wenger.

If you budget is $150 then gshock may be a realistic option. There are ghsocks that do automatic time sync, temperature, moon phase, tide times, sunrise/sunset, abc (altimeter barometer compass).

> He has a charcoal tux and I'd like for him to be able to wear the watch on his wedding day and for formal nights on our cruise.

For this I would suggest a classic men's dress watch, which are generally smaller, thinner and more traditional or elegant looking.

A few suggestions;

Tissot Classic dress watch

Citizen Eco Drive dress chrono

Seiko dress watch

> He has mentioned NUMEROUS times that he wants a nicer, casual watch.

Casual, to me, usually means something less dressy, thicker, chunkier like dive watch or a big aviator/military style watch.

Some possibilities;

Seiko military auto

Seiko Monster automatic diver

Hamilton Khaki

Citizen Eco Drive chrono

General tips and suggestions;

  • If you like the watch, but, don't care for the strap, you can often replace it with the strap of your choice. If there's an choice, I usual go with the watch on the steel/bracelet and then order an after market leather or rubber strap.

  • Brands to check out in your price range; Citizen, Seiko, Tissot, Hamilton, ESQ, Orient.

  • Brands I would steer you away from; Fossil, Struhrling, Invicta, any designer/fashion brand; Kenneth Cole, Micheal Kors, etc

  • Quartz is cheaper, more reliable, & accurate than mechanical/automatic watches, but, many high-end, luxury watch are mechanical. Why? Mechanical watches are general viewed as more interesting mechanical works of art & craftsmanship.

  • if you are shopping online, I recommend; Amazon, Jomashop, BlueDial, AuthenticWatches.

    > what watch would you like to receive as a gift for that price point?

If I was really interested in getting a casual watch, but, also in need of a dress watch, I would probably want to shop for a casual watch myself and be gifted the dress watch.

The thickness is ok if it was a diving style watch. The g watch r almost went that way, but i mean something that just looks like a seiko monster or something along those lines but with an OLED screen.

They shouldn't have started out trying to make dressy style watches when they still need to be this thick. Diving style watches are really popular. And it's weird no OEM has gone all in that direction yet. The GWR basically just looks like a big vaguely diver styled watch, without actually really looking like one.

For instance, my Bulova diving watch is probably about as thick as this... but the bezel tapers down, and there's much more variation in the surface of the front in general that makes it not just look like a big thick slab.

Not that I can add more than what's already been said, but they've been selling the "Monsters" for quite some time to many happy customers. Can you possibly get a defect? Of course, but that's why you buy from a store with a generous return policy.

If it's this SKX779 at Amazon for $187.50, it's going to be fulfilled by Jomashop. You can buy it direct from Jomashop for the same price. They'll warranty it for a full three years.

I'm confused. Is this a Monster?

Other than the face and crown, what's the difference from THIS?

I rather like wearing a watch, and decided to add a dive watch when I started diving. The first thing to decide is movement - battery, solar, or mechanical. For diving... I honestly think Solar is a great choice. No battery to replace, but also doesn't need service like mechanical. Citizen uses the "Eco-Drive" name for their solar, while Seiko just calls them "Seiko Solar". Seiko Kinetic is a similar thing - quartz watch with a movement based charging system - but they have a reputation for crapping out. The solar ones are basically bulletproof.

As you may know, if you want to dive a watch, simply getting something that says '200m water resist' isn't really enough. Watches that meet ISO6425 standards (which are specs for dive watches) will show 'Diver's 200m'. The proofing and testing is different, and the '200m/20atm' watches aren't necessarily dive ready. Wikipedia has a reasonable explanation of the testing differences. At the very least, you need a screw-down crown. Anything that says "Diver's 200m" on it will have that and be sufficiently reliable for diving work. Anything that says '300m' should be sufficient for at least basic diving... anything lower you're just going to have to ask the watch community about that particular watch specifically.

So - all that aside. Recommendations based on the digging I did while I was shopping. I ended up with an Orange Seiko Solar Diver. The Citizen Promaster divers are nice as well.

The 'Entry Level' seems to be this Casio. It's battery powered, but should last a long long time. It doesn't say Divers 200, but they have a reputation for lasting.

Cheap end of mechanical, the Vostok Amphibia. It's a completely different concept than the more traditional dive watch - uses soft seals and pressure to seal itself, rather than a hardened case. 'Automatic' or 'Self-Winding' mechanical, but it has a bi-directional bezel, meaning you can't really use the bezel for timing like you can on a true 'Dive Watch'. You can get em with a little scuba man on them, though. There's a bunch of different style Vostoks, but they're all functionally the same. Good watches.

Moving up in price a bit, Seiko makes some very nice mechanical dive watches. There's the SKX007, the SKX009, the 'Monster' watches (Available in Black, White and Orange), and some of my favorite looks - the Blue Lagoon and Turtle.

If you want to throw stupid money at the problem, my buddy has one of these Marathon watches which he loves dearly. They're one of the few divers you can get with actual radioactive tubes, so you don't have to charge the lume hands up in the sun.

I'll be honest, the dial face is at least inoffensive, but that case is going to be a pain in the ass more often then not. If you're right handed and wearing on the left, it'll dig into your wrist. In all likelihood, you will have difficulty wearing that with any longsleeve shirt because the sleeve will bunch up behind the watch due to the height. On top of that, that much steel is going to be heavy. I can appreciate that you like its design, but it won't be a very functional watch.

I don't know what colour watch you're after, but I can tell you want the big, rugged watch look. If you have $200 burning a hole in your pocket, check out the Seiko Monster, or a Seiko Diver, or a solar Powered Seiko Diver Chrono? These are all rugged watches as well, you could wear them with everything from swim trunks to a suit (okay a suit might be pushing it), and you could still wear them in 5 years when fashion watches have moved onto the next trend.

The bottom line is if you want a nice rugged watch that you can abuse, there are other better watches that you'll still want to have in 3 years when it comes time to have the battery changed. Seiko will make a better watch than Oakley, and hands down are better value even with a 60% discount on Oakley.

edit: I don't mean to be rude or anything, but I have worn a clunky fashion watch for a spell because I really liked how it looked, but functionally was a bad watch for those reasons I listed above. Learn from my mistakes.

How about a Seiko Monster. Very eye-catching watch and quite popular, too.

u/005 · 1 pointr/Watches

Would you consider the SKX007 or Black Monster (and here's Gen 2)? These are somewhat obvious suggestions, but the quality of the cases on these two are so much better than the Seiko 5s. The Gen 2 is especially interesting because it uses a 4R36 movement, which has a hacking seconds hand. That said, the SKX007 is prettier IMO.

This Monster. I love it but somehow water got in it while I was biking in the rain, and I'm not sure if I want to pay to get it repaired..

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Have you considered anything by Seiko? They have really nice watches available in a range of sizes to fit most wrists, and are much better quality than Diesel. You said you're looking for a bigger watch, so how about the "Orange Monster"? Probably my favorite watch at this price range, and it also comes with a black watchface if that's your thing. However if either of those are out of your price range (which is understandable, watches can get hella expensive) I'd recommend the Seiko 5 with either a metal or brown leather band.

u/spedmonkey · 1 pointr/Watches

Also, there's no such thing as a completely waterproof watch. There's watches that are water resistant down to absurd depths, like the Rolex Deepsea, but even that is not wholly waterproof. The Orient Mako might be a good choice; there's 50% off codes all over the internet for that website. You also couldn't really go wrong with another Timex. Either way, you're almost certainly looking for a diver watch. That link should be a good start.

edit: and if you don't mind spending a little bit more money, you could look into the famed Seiko Black/Orange Monster. I don't find them all that appealing myself, but there's tons of people out there who swear by them.

edit #2: I'm ashamed that I forgot all about the Vostok Amphibia. Those fuckers are indestructible, and way more unique than anything else you'd find on Amazon.
