EDIT: I dun goofed. OP said she preferred the simpler watch and I mistakenly thought she preferred the chrono. I'll leave this up and make a new post for simpler watches.

Okay so if a mechanical watch is "too flashy" for him and he would like a chronograph, I have a few suggestions around your budget.

Tissot is a very reputable and historic watch brand. They are now part of the Swatch group but historically this was the budget version of Omega. They are affiliated with a number of auto racing teams so they make sportier watches with a strong chronograph focus. The PRC200 is a bit simpler than the Breitling in Comparison A (which I selected because they are probably the "busiest" watches anywhere) but it is very readable and functional.

Seiko watches are also a good buy and slighly cheaper than Tissot. They can be as busy as that Breitling above if you get a flight navigation model. Some higher end Seikos get up to a few thousand dollars and are highly prized by watch collectors, so these are no slouches in terms of pure watch quality.

A Bulova is another option; personally I think they are hideous, but they have their fans. It's worth mentioning though that they make a line called the Precisionist line which ranges from very busy to a bit more understated so there may be one there that works for you. If he's a bit of a geek about tech stuff, the cool thing about these watches is that they are touted as amongst the most precise watches on the market; they are supposed to be accurate to within +/- 7 seconds per year I believe.

Hope this is a helpful list of suggestions. A watch "snob" would probably go for the Tissot, a techy would probably go for the Bulova, and a very practical person would probably go for the Seiko.

Graduation present from my parents. Quite snazzy, it is a tad busy! I've also got a leather strap and a 2 piece NATO on the way.
Probably going to pick up a SKX007 next. My pop has got a vintage 6309-7049 which is the same pretty much and I'm quite partial to Seikos as it is!

Hey! Why don't you get a dress watch? It's always easier to "dress-down" a dress watch for casual wearings.

  1. Sieko Flightmaster
  2. Orient Banbino
  3. Timex Expedition
  4. Junghans Max Bill (Probably not his style, but still a very appreciable design)

Here are a few recommendations. I've included a few links to give you an idea of what is out there. They vary in style and price. I'd say look around online a bit for styles that you like. Pretty much any Seiko Chronograph will be much better than the watches you showed us. Citizen has a wide variety of high quality watches as well but I'm a bit less familiar with their offerings.

I'm glad to see someone on here that isn't automatically suggesting some flieger styled auto. Yeah they're awesome and have a history of being a pilot watch, but honestly something quartz is much better suited for actual flying. I'd recommend something like a Citizen Nighthawk or a Seiko SNA411. Recommending an automatic old school flieger to an actual pilot is sort of like recommending an M1 Garand to a modern infantryman.

u/Crunchatize_Me_Cptn · 4 pointsr/Watches

I don't really know about flight computers or anything, but I know the Citizen Nighthawk has a slide rule and is very popular. Also the Navihawk or maybe the Seiko Flightmaster

u/spedmonkey · 4 pointsr/Watches

This would be the one, I believe.

https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNA411-Flight-Alarm-Chronograph/dp/B00068TJM6 this is sort of similar.

Parnis and Rotary also make Navitimer clones.

>I've even had a few pilots ask about the Seiko at work.

If you REALLY want the pilots to ask about your Seiko, make this your next Seiko.

u/carljv · 2 pointsr/Watches

Reading the name, I was expecting an SNA411 mod. This is really Painful-Injury-By-Numbers at best :)

Still, cool mod. Nice work, OP.

Buy something like a Seiko Men's SNA411 Flight Alarm Chronograph Watch Seiko
(http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00068TJM6/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_Y9khtb1V69CM5) and then save your money. Buy a vintage Rolex Submariner in another 5 years or so, and you'll have it for the rest of your life.

Edit: Replaced "Rolex Dive Master" with "Submariner"

Edit: I have a Seiko SNZF17 100M Diver's Watch in my collection, and thought it has a sporty feel to it. Feels like an Omega or Rolex on my wrist, not overly worried about damaging it while at the beach.

Seiko Flight Chronograph SNA411

Price: $200

Movement:Seiko Meca-Quartz

Style: Pilot Chronograph

Size: 42mm

Link: Amazon

Description: A great, affordable Seiko Chronograph. Reminiscent of Breitling, but different enough to have its own character. 200m water resistance and fantastic Seiko lume. Alarm function with dual-time sub dial. Seiko Meca-Quartz movement (chronograph seconds has a sweep-movement). Comes on a steel bracelet, but looks great on brown leather.

u/Synketsu · 2 pointsr/Watches

Couple of choices. I would buy a cheap Seiko and save up for the Breitling
Quartz Flightmaster or a simple Seiko Navi

Looks like a Seiko Pilot Chronograph of some sort, but I'm not sure if the exact model. Looks similar to this one, but not exactly the same.

u/sacundim · 1 pointr/Watches

Nobody seems to have noticed that the watch with the three subdials has a slide rule bezel. The slide rule is rendered very photorealistically, suggesting that it's rendered from a photo of a watch.

To my eye, the slide rule bezel looks like a Citizen or Casio slide rule watch (which look suspiciously similar, as if the two companies' slide rule bezels are from the same source; the Seiko ones look different).

EDIT: compare to this Casio Edifice, to this Citizen Nighthawk. Here's a Seiko for contrast.

u/midwatchcowboy · 1 pointr/Watches

These are quartz, but for <$200 and auto you've got Seiko5 and Orient Mako.

Yikes. Well the SNA411 I'm looking at in Amazon is running for $253 which seems about right, though it doesn't provide much description...

I'm looking to pick up my first entry-level luxury piece ($3000-4000 ideally), and I'm leaning towards Speedmaster Pro. I also can't stop thinking about how awesome the Black Bay Bronze is, but I'm not sure its as versatile. Anyone have any other suggestions?
