I am alone in this subreddit in my opinion that Nixon watches are acceptable... good, even. My brother-in-law has two 51-30's, one of which is an original and is going on something like its sixth year without a battery change.
They are expensive due to the nature of a fashion watch, but (the Swiss Ronda powered 51-30 Tide especially, but not the chrono you linked to) are pretty sturdy watches.
I was about to buy a 51-30 today if the surf shop had it in the color I wanted - no lie - but I didn't, and used my gift cards for other crap I'll probably enjoy less than I would have had annoying everyone in this subreddit by purchasing a 51-30.
But, to make a suggestion for another watch, the Seiko SNK366K can't steer you wrong at all.

I am looking to get my first automatic soon and I was hoping that I could get some recommendations to broaden my options. I have been looking at the ubiquitous Seiko 5, specifically the SNKL43 or SNK366. What other brands offer similar styles and quality at a similar price point?
If I were looking for a gold-coloured Seiko, I’d be more inclined to go for these:

The reason I’m pointing you towards these is that at a glance, the watch you’ve linked to looks like it has a custom bracelet. I don’t think you’d be able to switch to a leather or nylon strap easily.
I received my grandfathers Seiko SNK366K when he died last year. It's a quintessential cheap old man watch, but I'd like to wear it for sentimental reasons. Any ideas for straps or mods to make it a bit younger looking?
