Seiko SRP307 "Black Monster"

Price: $200-$250

Movement: Automatic, 4R36

Style: Dive

Size: 43mm w/o crown

Link: Google Images

Description:

This is the second version of Seiko's SRP "Monster" line of dive watches. The watches are designed and built to be rugged tool watches, and are worth every penny. While the design can be quite polarizing, I would remark that there is no substitute for seeing one in person. There are several different colourways and iterations (rubber band, steel bracelet), so you have your pick of colour / band combo, and along with other Seikos in this price category it is one of the most "modded" watches.

This watch fits the need of many beginner collectors looking for a rugged tool watch. With the "version 2" update, Seiko has added its 4R36 movement, with hacking and hand-winding. The 4R36 replaces the workhorse 7S26, and both have stood the test of time as being excellent watch movements. It is worth noting that all Seiko movements are entirely "in-house" movements, as Seiko one of the only two fully vertically integrated manufactures.

The watch is rated to 200m, which is more than enough for all-weather wear and casual swimming / recreational snorkeling. More seasoned divers may require a higher-rated watch, although I have never read a complaint about this watch failing under any stress or strain.

It is worth noting that the list price for this watch is ~$500.00. I have never seen one sold for that price, and Amazon consistently offers them for ~$200.00. They can be found for ~150.00 pre-owned. Anecdote: I bought mine new from an AD in Canada for $225. He was advertising a "deep discount" at the time. He has been advertising that same "deep discount" for years.

Seconded.

OP, don't get discouraged because everyone's opinions generally lean away from Invicta; we're trying to help you in the long run. If you like the watch, go for it. But if you want you can check out some of these higher quality pieces in that price range and see if any catch your eye.

My personal favorite. The Monster is a great tool watch. Very sturdy.

The closest in terms of style, but you'd have to wait for a sale.

Watchuseek is also a great resource for these watches or any used watches you may be interested in. Good luck!

My recommendation would be a Oris TT1, there are a couple of versions that are around or just under $1000.

Other possibilities; Hamilton Khaki King, Tissot SeaStar, Marcello C Nettuno 3, Mido All dial diver, or Davos Ternos.

And there are numerous much less expensive, but, good quality dive watches from Seiko or Citizen.

edited for spelling

Im a big fan of the Seiko Monsters, specifically the black SRP307 and Orange SRP309. They're very unique, and I think you'd have a tough time finder a better quality watch for $200.

Would you consider the SKX007 or Black Monster (and here's Gen 2)? These are somewhat obvious suggestions, but the quality of the cases on these two are so much better than the Seiko 5s. The Gen 2 is especially interesting because it uses a 4R36 movement, which has a hacking seconds hand. That said, the SKX007 is prettier IMO.

I'm trying to decide between two Seiko's at the moment.

The Seiko SUN025 link

The Seiko SRP307 link

Obviously the Seiko SRP307 is the more known of the two watches being the Black Monster is one of the most iconic Seiko's around, but I'm not really sure between the two. I don't "dive" all that frequently, although I do spend a lot of my free time at the beach and the pool.

However, I've also been enamored with the Rolex Explorer II ever since I was young and saw my uncle wearing one. Being that I'm a college kid on a budget, the Explorer will have to wait until after graduation, but the SUN025 seems like a great place holder for a style of watch that I love.

What do you guys think? Does anyone have any experience with either watch?
