Costco had Seiko solar chronograph watches in stainless steel for $50 several years ago. I bought 20. Still have the same one on my wrist. Never take it off. No problems. I've given away like 8 of them as gifts, but that was a deal of a lifetime.

Edit: this was the watch. Just an awesome watch . . . for $50. I should have bought 100.

This has a different color scheme, but a similar diver bezel. The solar seiko line is really pretty good imo if you are ok with quartz.

This one is more or less a similar color profile, but with a leather strap. I quite like it but it's up to you.

There are a butt-ton of others, it just take a bit of looking. It's hard for me to know what parts of the style is specifically the part you want. Do you want a "diver" look with a bezel, do you just like Rose gold accents, do you need a white face? Ect.

I'm extremely happy with my Citizen. Mine happens to be one of their "Drive" line, and it has an eco-drive movement. Eco-Drive means it's a quartz watch, powered by a solar panel. In theory you never have to change the battery. While mine has a metal bracelet, you can get similar watches with leather bands. The full collection is here. MSRP's shown there are misleading - I paid $149 for mine.

I'll also second the Seiko SKX007 (and SKX009) mentioned in other comments, one of those will probably be my next. The Seiko 5 series also gets some following here - it's about the cheapest you can get a serviceable automatic. The Seiko 5 is available in a pile of different colors and configurations for ~$55 to $80 depending on options. I've also been eyeing some of the Seiko Solar Dive Watches, but that's mostly because I'm looking specifically for a watch as a backup SCUBA timer. Orient also has a big line of fine looking mechanical watches, and they seem well-regarded around these parts of the internet.

Just to clarify (since I don't see a preference listed in your post...) - There are two major kinds of watch systems. Watch people call these 'Movements' - basically how does the watch keep time. You can either have Quartz, or Mechanical.

Quartz watches use a vibrating quartz crystal and a computer, then spit out the time on either a digital or mechanical dial. Within Quartz, you have battery drive quartz, solar quartz (eco-drive), and "Kinetic", where moving your hand generates electricity to power the watch.

Mechanical watches use a tiny rotating balance wheel to take the place of a pendulum, and use power for a wound-up spring to run a purely mechanical system of gears and levers and stuff to run the watch. Mechanical watches come in (mostly) two flavors - Automatic and Manual. Manuals you wind the spring by hand (think old pocket-watch), and automatics have a clever little weight inside them that automatically winds the spring as you move your arm around.

I like the idea of mechanical watches a lot. The knowledge that there's a bunch of tiny little gears and springs and levers all riding on jeweled bearings whirring away on my wrist just makes me super happy. Way more so than the steady electronic ticking of a quartz watch. But I'm also kind-of odd about things like that, so... If mechanical is important to you, you'll want to be looking for an automatic. If you just want a watch, I'd include the solars and kinetics - but I'd avoid anything battery driven.

Seiko Prospex Solar SSC017

Price: $180-$240

Movement: Solar Quartz V175

Style: Diver, Chronograph

Size: 43 mm ( not including the crown )

Link: Amazon SSC017 - black w/ blue , Amazon SSC015 - black w/ red , Amazon SSC031 - pepsi

Description: This is probably the most tool-tastic Seiko in this price range. It offers all the features of a dive watch, and it is ISO6425 certified, but it also has a full featured chronograph, complete with screwdown locks for the pushers. A number of people are not sold on the solar movement, but it is quartz accurate and durable. The bracelet is about the best Seiko bracelet I have seen anywhere close to this price, and it has a dive extension. Some people think the bracelet should have be 22mm, but I think the 20mm helps it wear a bit smaller. There are some other models that come on rubber straps, that for some reason are way more expensive, but they have some black with yellow options.

You've narrowed down your search to...still damn near every watch that exists.

But since you asked... Seiko Men's SSC017 Prospex Solar Stainless Steel Dive Watch.

I want to recommend the $40 Casio MDV106. I have one as my knock-around watch. My only reservation is the crystal. It's cheap something, and has scratched up fairly easily. And with your lifestyle that may be a deal breaker. It's fine for a $40 watch, but could possibly be too scratched up for you. It's a great watch otherwise. https://www.amazon.com/Casio-MDV106-1AV-Stainless-Steel-Watch/dp/B009KYJAJY

I don't know if the olive green is Army specific, or if it is also relevant to Marines – but the Victorinox INOX in green would be pretty cool: http://www.jomashop.com/victorinox-watch-241683-1.html

A cool Seiko, that's probably top of budget if SKX007 is the baseline, is the SBDN023. It's the new solar Tuna. There are a few color ways, but I'm linking the one that matches the SKX007 color which also seems to be the cheapest. Very cool watch. Wish I had a reason to own it. http://www.shoppinginjapan.net/lowercase-sbdn023

Another cool top of budget Seiko could be the SUN019. It's a horse of a watch, another I wish I had an excuse to own. Kinetic, which should be OK, but do google around and see if they stand up to physical abuse. https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Prospex-SUN019-Kinetic-Divers/dp/B00MCB9CJK

And as far as quartz divers go, Citizen's EcoDrive gives you a bunch of options.

What about the Seiko SSC031? it does have a blue face though.

Or you could go with the Seiko SSC017 and have someone swap out the bezel for you, like this gentleman did. Hell, you could probably do the changeout yourself.

Both of the Seikos I've listed above are chronographs, I'm not sure if that's a deal breaker. They are solar, so that may be a plus.

Seiko SKA371 (also known as the BFK)

SNE107

SSC017

These all come in colour variants.

or: http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SSC017-Solar-Stainless-Steel/dp/B00756GRUE/ref=swr_wa_2_ses (this might be my next watch)

My thoughts on solar vs mechanical at this price point: Chances are, you are not going to shell out for a service on a $200 mechanical watch, so why not chance it on a solar watch? There is overall less hassle, with them losing time etc.

u/kurazaybo · 2 pointsr/Watches

I would go for a quartz watch, I've accidentally dropped a couple of automatics. One stopped and had to be repaired and the other probably got misadjusted and started losing time.

These are not specifically guaranteed to survive shock, but will be fine in most circumstances. Check the Seiko Solar. I like the adventure. For a bit more you can get a diver. The metal bracelet will hold up much better than leather (or fake leather). There are more dressy options within the seiko solar, and other chronos.

You can get an eco drive too.

I think the 4r36 movement is more interesting than the one on the Seiko Skx007. It features hacking and handwinding and (supposedly) better accuracy. I really liked the SRP 147, I looked at it closely at a local watch store. There is a variant with a green dial and without the black finish, but it does not say "made in japan". The SRP169 features a black metal bracelet, a bezel with a more useful 0-60 scale and the "made in japan" imprint. Of course that does not mean the watch was entirely made there and the actual watch you get may vary, but I think it is a nice detail. The SRP147 I saw in person did say the japan thing.

The lowest prices I've ever seen for a watch with that movement are $116 and $120. If only the latter came with the bracelet from the first one...

Edit: I forgot the sk007 is a certified diver, you can read more about that here http://monochrome-watches.com/seiko-skx007-family-seiko-beater-divers/

u/CombatJack1 · 2 pointsr/Watches

if I had to guess I'd say it was this one

u/dreamsofpinkflamingo · 2 pointsr/Seiko

Seiko makes a solar powered quartz diver with chrono that has a simlar look but not the same colour. Have a look at ssc017 http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SSC017-Solar-Stainless-Steel/dp/B00756GRUE

u/TheStuffle · 2 pointsr/Watches

This one? There's a ton of info on that watch, and it seems really popular. I just don't really like the chrono-diver thing (and already have a diver). Also, as far as I can tell, they should have very similar movements.

To be honest, Citizen has really disappointed me in their budget chronograph designs. All of them look either overly complex or silly, or both. There is one that comes so close, but then they ruined it with the lime green hands :\

I'm really wanting something with the spirit of a TAG Carrera, but it seems hard to find a solar-chrono that doesn't look like something a 6th grader would find attractive.

u/sircarbonmojo · 2 pointsr/Watches

seiko diver chrono if you haven't seen this one already

u/ryanvango · 2 pointsr/Watches

I actually really like the seiko with the 1/4 bezel a lot. I think that's more than I'm willing to spend for the next little while though. I think I would get this seiko 5 before I start edging up on that $200 line. I know its not a big jump around here, but I can't afford splurges that big that often.

SSC019 or SSC017 are a little bit cleaner.

Tell me about it, holy shit. Just 2 months ago I remember staring at my Jacques Lemans chronograph that I received as a graduation gift and wondering if there was a large subreddit devoted to watches. Boy, was that a mistake. Pair that with my new internship that I started last week? Let's just say I'm still decently broke despite my shiny new job.

I started 2015 with a stunning Rotary auto, Seiko 5, Orient Esteem, and an Armani Exchange chronograph (a gift from my ex). My friends also bought me a watch box for my birthday so now I will be collecting even more vigorously.

I have decided to start saving money and budgeting, so I will be mainly focused on straps and working with what I have, but my next two purchases are already planned out: this Seiko will be purchased as my first dive watch, and then I will be saving up for a second hand Rolex Datejust 1603.

u/ChronicMasterBaker · 1 pointr/Watches

I made a similar post but got no response. I narrowed it down to these two though

Solar Dive Stainless Steel Dive Watch

Citizen Men's BN0000-04H

I really want the citizen, but the reviewers' experience with citizen customer service is pushing me towards the seiko.

u/MOX-News · 1 pointr/Watches

Not all of them, it seems. This one has a 24 hour dial, but reviews say that it's locked to the 12 hour hand and can't be used for a second time zone or as part of the chronograph. To me that's a damn shame because it's gorgeous, but I can't stand redundant features like that.

u/daringescape · 1 pointr/Watches

I own this watch and LOVE it. It is solar powered, and quartz if that matters to you, but it is a fantastic watch. I wore it swimming and snorkeling in Hawaii for 2 weeks last year and it has survived multiple trips to the water park and lots of swimming as well as everyday use.

u/csulildude · 1 pointr/Seiko

As you are the expert I am curious as to what mod you think would look similar. I don't know much but my though would be taking this watch and changing out some of the hands and bezel with orange. If that is possible or you have other thoughts feel free to pm me and we can discuss price.
