>Well that's not really how trade value works. This is not a for sale, but rather a trade. I.e is skx is worth about the same, yes you could buy one new for around 175, but you don't. This is just an rough number for people to reference when trading. I understand that's you could buy it new, but people aren't wanting to pay for a brand new watch, but instead just trading their used one for another's used watch.

I mean, you do your thing man, but if you're valuing it at over retail ($165) for a used Blue Ray, in that case, someone can valuate their SKX at over retail as well. Want to buy my SKX007J at $280?

Edit: Spelling.

What watches does he have? What type of watch do you want - sport, dress, dive, aviator? Where is he going to wear it? How much can you spend?

This is a very cool thing you're doing - happy birthday to you and your brother.
I'm a bit of a watch nut and generally go for automatic watches, so that's what I'll stick to here....unfortunately none of them are as trendy as the larger Hugo you've mentioned. I'm not as familiar with the trendier stuff...but I can offer some input.
In that price range, I normally recommend Seiko. Their dive watches are pretty solid (http://amzn.to/1wX9UCd) and right in your range, but if you're looking for something a bit dressier the SARB line has some great pieces....although a bit higher than you mentioned - http://amzn.to/1tteaIk. The Seiko movement isn't as well known as the Swiss movements, but it's great all the same. For the money, they're hard to beat.
Going a bit cheaper, you can look at the Chinese made watches. Sea-Gull has some good looking ones. I've actually had one for a bit, but the quality wasn't the same and I ended up letting it go. The materials aren't as solid and the fit and finish isn't the same as Swiss or a Seiko. At the same time, you get a whole lot more shoved in the watch for quite at a much lower price point. For instance - a Chinese-made Sea-gull tourbillon starts at $4000ish, while a Swiss-made one will start at....$35000. That said - this is an attractive sea-gull: http://bit.ly/1wUHdab; and here is a dressier one: http://bit.ly/1yOyFks
Another option is to go vintage. You can get some cool watches at great prices - Omega, Jaeger Le-Coultre, Girard-Perregeaux. While I generally wouldn't recommend eBay due to the amount of fraud you'll find, here's a good looking Seamaster currently for sale - http://ebay.to/1zqa1tC. A more reliable source for used watches is http://www.watchrecon.com/. It's an aggregate of several watch fora and you can see what's currently for sale.
Best of luck in your search.

A Rolex is a Rolex - but it also carries a lot of weight with it. I would love to have Rolex GMT - but - it just is not something that is in the budget right now. Even if it was...

That said, I have two Seikos (including the MIJ version of this one. For a wee bit of extra exclusivity - you should look into the Seiko SKX009 made in Japan. These are sometimes available on Amazon - and take a little more digging, but aren't extraordinarily more expensive. The black version is available on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/SKX007J1-Analog-Japanese-Automatic-Rubber-Divers/dp/B000RF6QRY Although you'll need a new bracelet - which are available online as well.

It's a great watch and I get lots of compliments on mine. It will keep the same time as a Rolex iand is super heavy. You might also want to look at Orient watches. OR if you want to go up a few dollars but less than a Rolex check out Tudor.

Believe me know one in watch circles would see it as anything other than a wonderful, affordable watch. Not a rip-off in the least bit.

It's either a typo, or different editors rounded the numbers differently (IIRC, someone said that the actual case size is 41.something mm, and so you can either round down to 41 or round up to 42).

Anyway, I'd suggest taking the "specs" listed by various online sites as "guidelines". For example, these list the size of the J1 as 42:

Yes, the J version has 21 jewels written underneath Diver's 200m.

Personally, I'd go one of the following over that one. Not a bad starting point, though!

Seiko SKX007J1

Seiko SKX173

Seiko SKX009

Still not seeing what you mean. I can't find an SKX007J with both straps for less than $200 on Amazon. Would love to see a link.
