I don't know where you live, but the people I know definitely think gaming setups are expensive. That's why people buy them rarely, and invest in ones that last a long time. There are expensive hobbies out there -- skiing, hunting, equestrianism off the top of my head. But those aren't run-of-the-mill hobbies, those are expensive hobbies. Playing Mardu Vehicles is also an expensive hobby.

Let's compare Magic to similar games for its audience:

  • Introductory gaming is about the same price as similar options. F2P online games cost $0 to get into, as do free 30-card decks. Light board games (part of a moderately expensive hobby) are around $10-$20, as are Planeswalker decks.
  • Middle-of-the-road gaming is more expensive than many options, but close to board game habits. Free online games are a staple of Magic's target audience, and a moderately-serious FNM is likely to cost $30-$50 more than League of Legends. It's more on par with various popular board games. A player going for budget HS decks is also saving money compared to budget MtG decks.
  • High-end MtG gaming is god damn expensive, especially for your target audience. $300 for Temur Aetherworks gets you most (all?) of HS's competitive field, or LotR LCG + 6 deluxe expansions + 2 saga expansions, or every major expansion for Sentinels of the Multiverse, or the Elder Scrolls series + the Mass Effect series + GTA 5 + Rocket League + Witcher 3.

So if you're a new gamer, MtG is expensive compared to LoL, HS, and Clash of Clans. If you're kind of invested in gaming, Magic is similarly-priced to board games but will rotate out. If you're heavily invested in competitive gaming, Magic is a money vortex.

    Magic is expensive.

Killer price on Machi Koro, and Splendor both. Black Fleet and Tash Kalar, meh whatever.

I just want to point out that Sentinels of the Multiverse is still on sale, with Prime. One of my favorite games ever. It's absolutely worth buying it's Xpac with it.

$17.39 Lowest price EVER, and it's a STEAL at that price.

I'd tell this dad to pick up Sentinels of the Multiverse. Very fun card game that has superhero characters that are parodies of famous DC and Marvel characters and a good balance of male and female characters to play as. It is also a really fun game.

Dauntless was great until we accidentally crashed the build (sorry!).

Phoenix Covenant was an awesome tactics card game that felt like something you could just get absolutely enthralled with.

Has Been Heroes was a fun little game that I felt was betrayed a bit by the control scheme of the demo. I'll probably pick it up on Steam at some point in the near future.

Game of Thrones: Hand of the King was very easy to pick up and had a good amount of depth to its strategy. Of note: It was the only game I had my heart set on buying to the point that when no one on the show floor had it I went to Amazon.

Gingerdead was an interesting little tower defense game that was fun but random. Not quite Munchkin random, but random enough that it cooled me on it.

Sentinels of the Multiverse Ok I'm cheating on this one since Sentinels isn't exactly new or unheard of, but it was my first time playing and I had an absolute blast.

Sentinels of the Multiverse is on sale and I think it fits pretty well in all of your categories.

Amazon has it for $27.

2 bucks more expensive but you get free shipping.

We are all about 2-player games! Off the top of my head, we love Quarriors and DC Deck Building Game. Both can be played with groups of people but also work well with just the two of us. (There's a Marvel Deck Building Game too, but the gameplay is completely different and not as fun in my opinion. It's similar to Sentinels of the Multiverse where the team is fighting together to beat the enemy.)

If you guys also like board games, this is a really fun cooperative deck building game where you’re the super heroes fighting together to take down the bad guy.

I got one of my husbands Sentinels of The Multiverse and he loves it. I took a chance on another redditors recommendation and it went perfectly. It seems a little to complicated for my brain but he gets to play with the kids and our cousin.

I would say just for replayability, Sentinels of the Multiverse. The basic set comes with so many variations between environments, villains, and heroes, that it basically has infinite replayability.

It's $30 at Amazon.
