I took a class on biogeochemistry.

• Bacterial Biogeochemistry: The Ecophysiology of Mineral Cycling. This is the main book. It is a seriously dense, heavily sited text on how biochemistry and environmental geochemistry come together.
  
• Seven Clues to the Origin of Life: A Scientific Detective Story
  
• Life on a Young Planet: The First Three Billion Years of Evolution on Earth
  
  Also, a course in cellular biology helps.
  

I would like to point out that evolution DOES NOT explain the origin of life, but the diversity of it. The science concerned with that is called Abiogenesis.
