I did a ton of research on ingrowns when I started getting them just shaving my legs (ugh). This is what has helped:

  • Exfoliate the area when you’re in the shower. Be diligent but gentle about it. I use this but idk if you should use something else since it’s your face. Somebody else weigh in?

  • Don’t shave with a razor. Get an electronic shaver that will give you a close shave. <- game changer right here.

  • Stridex in the red box after the area has dried and let it dry without putting anything else on it so the BHA has time to work. I’ll slap some lotion on once the BHA has fully dried (this FAB lotion is my favorite for this).

  • Don’t pick or pluck your ingrown hairs out. Only exfoliate and shave them down. This has been the hardest for me because I love the satisfaction of getting an ingrown unstuck but always end up doing more damage than good. And then it gets infected. And then I pick at it more. It’s a vicious cycle.

I’d also take the fungal advice seriously. Ingrowns can get infected really fast and you need to be sure you’re treating the whole issue and not just part of it.

Good luck! I hope it all heals soon!

Edit: here’s a funny comic about ingrown hairs if you need a little pick me up while you’re battling this.
