Shure headphones. They come with great sound, detachable cables, and an awesome warranty. I had a problem with a pair that was about 3 years old. When I called the customer service number, I was connected to a us based rep. After explaining the problem and how I didn't have a receipt, he just kept telling me to send them in, and basically as long as they could verify that they were authentic, they would either fix it or replace them.

When asking for a name and an email stating this, or so I could include a note in the box, he kind of laughed and said just say "Nick" or "Jeff" (can't remember the guys name)said so.... After talking to him for a few minutes it was basically a small enough team that the customer service reps and the techs all knew each other and who they talked to and just had a great goodwill team. After that, I'll never buy another brand. As much as the item should be buy it for life, they ended up selling me for life.

The oairbi bought are these. https://www.amazon.com/Shure-SRH840-Professional-Monitoring-Headphones/dp/B002DP8IEK/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1525152429&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=shure+840

200 with great reviews. I did a lot of research over at head-fi.org before I bought them. Those guys know their stuff and this was a recommended set.

Thought these would be a good starting point on some new stuff.

Also, maybe consider using Equalizer APO to get the JBL LSR305's to match No Audiophile's settings, and maybe give us your review of those settings.

EDIT: Added prices to make it easier.

I do it because no one did it for me lol. I made crap music on my own for years. Just recently have I been getting good feedback from a number of musician friends. And I have very good studio headphones xD.

These are my reference monitors

I just see too much upvote/dvote this song and leave no feedback. So at least say something don't upvote/downvote any post on this subreddit without a few words imo. (this is for anyone reading this not you TooBakedtoDrive,)

u/explosivo563 · 3 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

I am in a similar position as you and I plan to get the Shure 440 at $100. Neutral sound, removable cable (so you can get a shorter one), foldable with pouch included. I have read many people actually prefer them to the $200 Shure 840. Another alternative that brings up tons of debate between these two is the KRK 8400 for $110, and the KRK 6400 for $91. But like I said, after doing quite a bit of research I have decided I feel most comfortable with the 440 and their pricetag. The shure 840 pads are an easy upgrade to the 440 as well.

Outside these the xpt100 seems like a great choice as well. Although they are quite big for public use.

u/Ohnoezszs · 3 pointsr/headphones

Well bose usually have a coloured sound, not sure about that model but it's a safe assumption. I'd suggest the [Shure SRH840] (http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SRH840-Professional-Monitoring-Earphones/dp/B002DP8IEK). Neutral sound, fits your budget, closed back, circumaural, removable cord, coiled cable, and driven easily.

u/SoundMasher · 3 pointsr/audioengineering

Shure SMH840.

Though they are slightly above to $100 mark (They're about $150-200), the quality you get for price can't be beat.
Though they have a coiled cable (which I find annoying on any pair of hp), the frequency response is fantastic and best of all they are solid and comfortable as fuck. I can wear these for hours. I love them! The clarity across the spectrum is beautiful. I find them to be very neutral (which is perfect for studio monitoring, but some people don't like it) and the isolation is great (which is perfect if you're working at home with all its noisy distractions). I've had mine for almost 2 years and they still look, feel and sound brand new. They also come with an extra pair of foam ear pads and a case.

Posted yesterday with minimal response.

Budget: US$200 is a hard limit for everything, including any recommended DACs or amps.

Sources: Laptop computers, mobile device, and headphone-out jack to my (not-so-high-quality) home audio system.

Requirements for Isolation: Though I'll primarily use headphones indoors, I may be listening to my iPod in public. I'd therefore want good isolation.

Preferred Type of Headphones: Closed over-ear > closed on-ear > alternatives. I am not interested in IEMs.

Preferred tonal balance: Unsure; probably neutral? See "Preferred Music" below if that helps.

Past headphones: Mostly cheap, sub-US$40 on-ear eadphones or earbuds/IEMs. Over 10-15 years ago, I think I had the predecessor to the Sony MDR-V6, which I liked, though I had no decent frame-of-reference to which to compare them at the time.

Preferred Music: I actually listen more to podcasts than music; ideally, I'd like something that is a good complement to something like Radiolab, which has detailed, interesting sound engineering. In terms of music, I listen to rock (especially alternative), electronic, and mashups. I'd prefer healthy bass, but nothing so bass-heavy it creates a lopsided profile. I also expect to use these to listen to TV and movies as well as on my computer, but I don't do any gaming.

Miscellaneous: I'd prefer something that does not require an amp or DAC, especially since I may be using this in public with mobile devices. I'd also prefer something sturdy enough to last many years, including travel. Being able to replace the earpads would be a definite bonus. What the headphones look like is secondary to me, provided they're neither comically large, nor scream, "Expensive! Steal me!"

What I'm Currently Considering:

  1. Sony MDR-V6: US$80 at Amazon.

  2. Sony MDR-7506: US$85 at Amazon.

  3. Audio-Technica ATH-M50: US$127 at Amazon. (Left to my own devices, I'd likely get either these or the ATH-M50x below on the strength of reviews and recommendations for headphones in my price range.)

  4. Audio-Technica ATH-M50x: US$170 at Amazon.

  5. Shure SRH840: US$200 at Amazon; very close to my budget's hard limit. (Considered primarily since it was suggested as an alternative to the ATH-M50/ATH-M50x.)

  6. Whatever additions to this list you fine people may suggest.

    Addendum: Suggestions currently include:

    Beyerdynamic DT770, 80 ohms, via /u/TheJosablo; US$170 on eBay.

Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro, via /u/DependantBlackWoman; US$172 at Amazon.

Thanks for any counsel you can provide!

Take a look at the Shure SRH840.

u/arrcanos · 3 pointsr/hardware

So...here are a few suggestions at this price range:

Audio Technica ATH-M50x: $120 (Probably the most recommended headphone ever. Somewhat boomy bass at times).
http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR86

Ultrasone HFI-580 S-Logic: $132.98 (Tighter bass than the M50x, typical Ultrasone v-curve, and pretty fun).
http://www.amazon.com/Ultrasone-HFI-580-Professional-Closed-back-Headphones/dp/B00101UHS8

Beyerdynamic DT770: $137.58 (Another classic. Built like a tank. Probably the second "brightest" pair of cans on this list next to the Ultrasone 780).
http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-770-PRO-250-ohms/dp/B0006NL5SM/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1463101103&sr=1-2&keywords=dt+770

AKG K553 Pro: $172.99 (My office cans. These are fairly flat with slightly accentuated bass. Their mids are a bit veiled. They can be had for $120 on Massdrop sometimes and are probably worth closer to that amount than the $170+ they usually go for).

Ultrasone HFI-780 S-Logic: $173.85 (Currently wearing these right now while while listening to Hotel California. These headphones have a strong v-curve and can be fatiguing due to how bright their treble is. However, with the right music, they can be really, really fun).
http://www.amazon.com/Ultrasone-HFI-780-Professional-Closed-back-Headphones/dp/B00101XVH2

Sennheiser Momentum: $188.90 (I've not heard these personally, so I can't give any appropriate opinion).
http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Momentum-Headphone-Brown/dp/B009QV15DU

Shure SRH840: $189.95 (I've not heard these personally, so I can't give any appropriate opinion. However, in my limited experience, Shure's tend to be flat and cough boring).
http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SRH840-Professional-Monitoring-Headphones/dp/B002DP8IEK

Sony MDR1R: $199.95 (I didn't spend too much time with these as I wasn't very impressed. A few other options I listed above are much more fun or balanced, but I figured I'd put them on the list anyways).
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDR1R-Premium-Over-Headphones/dp/B009A6CZ30

I almost always suggest Audio Technica M50x at this price range. That's not because I think they're the most fun or balanced. It's because they're a great entry level headphone for someone that doesn't know exactly what they want from their daily driver. If someone is sure that they like a nice v-curve, I'm not afraid to suggest Ultrasones or Beyerdynamics. I really want to try out the Sennheiser Momentums, but I haven't had the chance yet.

u/Radio_Flyer · 3 pointsr/drums

I use these and they sound great! Clean and loud.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/headphones

I've never owned any high quality headphones so don't trust my words but guessing by the reviews I have read, ATH-M50 would be the best for you.

Also the SHURE SRH840 might be a good alternative.

u/twistacles · 2 pointsr/headphones

SRH840 > m50 imo

http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SRH840-Professional-Monitoring-Earphones/dp/B002DP8IEK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1347841504&sr=8-1&keywords=srh840

detacheable cord, better mids/soundstage. Less impactfull bass but still very controlled

u/djbeefburger · 2 pointsr/DJs

I really love my Shure SRH-840s, and they're in that price range. I use them for studio monitoring and djing. They're sturdy, sound great, and are durable. I've had mine for a few years and they're still in great condition. The only complaint I've heard from others is that they're heavy, but to me they're absolutely comfortable, even after a half dozen of more hours of consecutive use.

Edit: SRH. I always do that.

u/edydantes · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

Wow! I thought I had big ears... Oh well. Good luck! SRH840s are my faves for headphones, but in-the-house only.

u/cezzlo · 2 pointsr/MLPLounge

The SRH840s do look really nice... Argh, decisions.

You did suggest that store but i just found them on Amazon for $145. Can you tell me how these are for you?

u/Eyloner · 2 pointsr/headphones

I recommend the Shure SRH840 for a closed-back headphone with a neutral sound signature.

u/Alkali-A · 2 pointsr/battlestations

I'm found ya a couple options for ya.

Planar Magnetic Headphones aka "special driver headphones"

Monoprice M1060s Perfectly fine stock, maybe a change of earpads if you're looking for something a little "more" https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-116050-Monolith-Magnetic-Headphones/dp/B01N32N5DD

Modhouse Argon Mk3s These are specially modded headphones that give you an option for choice of headband material and earpad material (sheep leather is soft man) http://www.modhouseaudio.com/argon-mk3/zimu3wz0oyxlavnprki2jovso6c31v

Dynamic Open Headphones aka, "normal headphones"

AKG K712 Pros Very accurate, lots of soundstage, plenty of bass You may have to get a used pair as prices are on the rise https://www.amazon.com/AKG-Pro-Audio-Reference-Headphones/dp/B00DCXWXEI

Philips X2/27 Almost the same as the 712s, a little more narrow of a soundstage and "possibly" less accurate Debatably less comf (comparatively speaking) Again, you'll need to get them used but they're cheaper used than 712s https://www.amazon.com/Philips-X2-27-Fidelio-Headphone/dp/B00O2Y2MZG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1522866842&sr=8-2&keywords=philips+x2

Audio Technica ATH AD series Very accurate, good soundstage, amazing treble, but definitely bass light. It's an entire series of headphones and each model up adds a slight bump in quality overall, used or otherwise https://www.amazon.com/Technica-Audiophile-ATH-AD1000X-Open-Air-Headphones/dp/B009S330O8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1522866903&sr=8-3&keywords=ATH+AD

Dynamic Closed Headphones

Beyerdynamic DT 770 Plenty of soundstage, treble is there, and BASS https://www.amazon.com/beyerdynamic-770-PRO-Studio-Headphone/dp/B0006NL5SM/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1522866927&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=beyerdynamic+dt770&psc=1

AKG K553 Pros Accurate, excellent mids, lacks soundstage but remarkably good build https://www.amazon.com/AKG-3280H00100-K-553-Pro/dp/B00X3MT7F6/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1522866966&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=AKG+K550+Pros

Shure SRH840 Hesitant to put this on the list as this is basically how to perform studio monitoring Super Neutral, accurate as it gets almost, not a huge player in the soundstage game. You'll need new earpads for particularly long sessions of use https://www.amazon.com/Shure-SRH840-Professional-Monitoring-Headphones/dp/B002DP8IEK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1522867035&sr=8-1&keywords=Shure+SRH840

And finally the Koss KSC75s get a pair, no exceptions. They are not a replacement for ANY of the other options on this list as they're closer to earbuds than headphones, but the amount of sound quality you get for their 15 dollar price point you should already own a pair https://www.amazon.com/Koss-KSC75-Portable-Stereophone-Headphones/dp/B0006B486K/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1522867066&sr=8-1&keywords=koss+ksc+75

A few of these may be hard to drive on their own and may need a headphone amp or dac/amp combo to run properly and if you're not at ease with that right now there are always options.

Edit: removed accidental affiliate links that snuck in

u/Hellcloud · 2 pointsr/hardware

Audio-Technica ATH-AD900

Shure SRH840

There are several other good cans in your price range, but these two should probably fit your needs quite well...

u/dolichoblond · 2 pointsr/headphones

These Sony's are well-regarded and been mentioned often, they're just a tad over-budget, likely owing to their status as a Japan import.

Then you have their siblings.

The Shure Series 840 and the 440 are both good for mastering too. KRK 8400 and lower in the series fits the same profile.

These are the usual suspects in the flat-response, studio monitoring headphones. I only have experience with the Sony MDR7506 and loved it for the price. Much more neutral than the ATH-M50, but that's sure to be mentioned and worth a listen if its not-so-flat response profile is ok for house music specifically.

u/duhduhduhduhduh · 1 pointr/malefashion

i use my shure SRH 840's

they're huge

clunky

overall not great looking

they sound decent though

resorted to this after breaking 5 different pairs of IEMs

u/the_monster_consumer · 1 pointr/headphones

The HD558 is a great headphone, but it is open backed and therefore provides no insulation from the outside world. Sennheiser does some pretty decent closed back headphones that most stores have available to demo - go and listen!

The M50s are loved here but they are far from neutral. Some love the sound but others don't so it would be worthwhile getting them from a place with a good return policy if you are to get them. They have a bass emphasis, which may or may not be for you.

If you could come up to $200, the Shure SRH840 is the one I would buy. Very well recommended all across the Internet and represents great value. The SHR440 is also good if you wanted a cheap set of cans for $100, but it's nowhere in the league of its older brother.

You can find the SRH840 for less than $100 used in good condition; there’s currently a set on Amazon in “like new” condition for $87 shipped.

u/andrew12361 · 1 pointr/buildapc
u/Kuriousmax · 1 pointr/headphones

I think the main question you need to answer is: Do you want open or closed headphones? If you want bass, closed will most likely be what you want but that's not always the case.

For closed:

$80 Phillips CitiScape Uptown have been getting some good reviews.

~$108 Audio Technica ATH-M50s are always recommended in your price range.

$170 Shure SRH-840

For Open:

$100 Grado SR80i

$100 Audio Technica AD700

$170 Audio Technica AD900

$177 Sennheiser HD 558

These are only a few options. I would check out the InnerFidelity wall of fame and the head-fi recommendations by price range. I used to have the skullcrushers as well and I know for a fact that every one of these headphones will sound unbelievably better.

u/Mad_Economist · 1 pointr/CabaloftheBuildsmiths

Alright, I can work with that.

To preface this, I recommend pairing one of the following headphones with a clip-on microphone - either a cheaper model like a [Zalman ZM-Mic1] (http://www.amazon.com/Zalman-Zm-Mic1-Sensitivity-Headphone-Microphone/dp/B00029MTMQ) or a more expensive model like [Antlion's Modmic] (http://www.modmic.com/collections/frontpage) - rather than getting a headset with an integrated mic. From a price/performance standpoint, headsets almost never stack up. The headsets made by the real headphone brands are exceedingly expensive, and with a very small body of exceptions the cheaper headsets sound terrible.

Now, onward to the headphones. When I hear "isolation", "comfort", and "neutral/warm sound signature", the first thing that comes to my mind is [NVX's] (http://www.head-fi.org/t/624729/review-nvx-xpt100-a-direct-brainwavz-hm5-competitor) [XPT100] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2G9qk7IOEA) ([$99 via Amazon] (http://www.amazon.com/NVX-Over-Ear-Headphones-ComfortMax-Cushions/dp/B0093PVTPS)). I actually own a pair of these myself for use as moderate isolation movie/podcast headphones for when my house is too loud for me to use my open headphones, and they're among the most comfortable headphones I've had. While they don't take the top spot - no headphones without an AKG-style suspension strap will ever do that - they're definitely in the top five or so. Their sound isn't the most detailed out there, but they're fairly neutral, solidly built, and very comfortable, particularly given their price.

A more expensive step up would be [Shure's] (http://www.head-fi.org/products/shure-srh840/reviews/5056) SRH[840] (http://www.head-fi.org/products/shure-srh840/reviews/3768) ([$199 via Amazon] (http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SRH840-Professional-Monitoring-Headphones/dp/B002DP8IEK/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1426324378&sr=1-1&keywords=shure+srh84)). While I sadly haven't had a chance to try these out myself, I've heard little but good things about them. Formerly on Innerfidelity's wall of fame, and with consistently good reviews for their sound, comfort, and overall quality, they're definitely a solid choice if you're looking for a neutralish sound with some bass.

A third option would be the [Focal Spirit One] (http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/focal-spirit-one-page-3) ([$175] (http://www.amazon.com/Focal-529102-SPOH-Spirit-One-Headphones/dp/B007AH7YFU) or [$179] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008R9QRIU/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2?pf_rd_p=1944687702&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B007AH7YFU&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0HS51KQ3XCE0J5B14R27) via Amazon for the black and white models, respectively). Focal has a quite a solid reputation in audio, but the Spirit One had some serious issues on its release due to manufacturing defects, and it suffered a rather bad reception as a result. These issues are said to have been since resolved, however, and the Spirit One is a very solid headphone at that price. The sound is a bit on the bassy side, but not extremely so, and is quite good for this price. Comfort may be an issue, however, as the One was quite clearly designed more for portability than comfort. While no review characterizes it as uncomfortable, it's a safe bet that it doesn't measure up to the other two in this regard.

Another rather unique option, albeit one with some inherent drawbacks, would be [Fostex's] (http://www.head-fi.org/t/570138/review-fostex-t50rp-my-intro-to-the-world-of-orthos) [T50RP] (http://www.head-fi.org/t/559233/review-fostex-t50rp-its-been-needing-a-review) ([$127 via Amazon] (http://www.head-fi.org/t/559233/review-fostex-t50rp-its-been-needing-a-review)). Now, the T50RP is, at stock, not the best-liked headphone. Though it is one of the (if not the) cheapest orthodynamic headphones in the world, its very poor comfort and [rolled-off sound] (http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/FostexT50RP2011B.pdf) have attracted a lot of criticism. Having a pair myself, I wholeheartedly agree with criticism of its comfort, but think its stock sound is better than people give it credit for. What the T50RP has going for it, however, is an [exceptionally dedicated modding community] (http://www.head-fi.org/t/618659/fostex-t50rp-incremental-mods-and-measurements), and some very high-profile modified variants. Modded T50RPs under the branding of MrSpeakers and ZMF can sell for $300, $600, or even $1,000, and experienced reviewers and audiophiles alike have claimed that they measure up to headphones in those price ranges. If you happen to feel a DIYish inclination, a T50RP can be quite a solid project to work on, and, in theory, it can get you $300-600 sound quality for a little sound of $200 accounting for the various materials it takes to mod them.

Now, there are, as said, quite a few drawbacks to the T50RP: the stock sound isn't for everyone, it requires more power to drive than the other mentioned headphones (not enough to cause issues at stock, in my opinion, but when modded it can be quite intensive to drive, almost assuredly moreso than your integrated audio can support), and it's absolutely terrible in comfort (if you do go for them, [a headband cover like this] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00862522A/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and a pair of [Shure] (http://www.amazon.com/Shure-HPAEC840-Replacement-Cushions-Headphones/dp/B002Z9JWZS/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1426325351&sr=1-1&keywords=shure+pads) or [Brainwavz] (http://www.amazon.com/Brainwavz-Replacement-Memory-Foam-Earpads/dp/B00MFDT894/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1426325358&sr=1-1&keywords=brainwavz+pads) pads were what I used to take them from "terrible" to "pretty darn solid" comfort), and modding isn't for the faint of heart. After quite a while of tinkering, I've yet to get my own T50RP mod working properly. It's amazing value if you can make it work for you, but it's quite a significant amount of effort to achieve that.

An amp will probably push you over your budget. The Schiit Magni and Modi (if you have a line-out on your computer, you can skip the modi) are some of the cheapest pieces that will make a noticable difference.

Entry level amps like the Fulla (also from Schiit) won't be a huge improvement over your PC.

I'd actually suggest skipping the amp for now, and using that budget for better headphones.

The only thing to watch out for is that you won't want to get headphones that require amping. No Sennheiser HD600/HD650 in other words.

That said, I like my SRH-840s at work (a noisy environment). I can hear people announce themselves, but the music isn't drowned out.

They're relatively balanced, and still look mint after daily use for 4 years (I'm gentle with them though).

I've also heard great things about the beyerdynamic DT770 (32 ohm), and audio technica M50x (the cheapest of the bunch). I don't own either, though, and can't comment as to their qualities.

You may even be happy with the AKG K553 from mass drop.

EDIT: Just remembered the Monoprice Amp. That one is probably the cheapest amp that could make a difference. I haven't heard it though, so I can't say for sure. You still shouldn't need it.

What I want:

  • Bass, but not overflowing with it if you know what I mean
  • Comfy. Like, very comfy
  • Sturdy. I will carry these in a hard case in my backpack, so they won't just be on my desk
  • Noise cancelling (Would be a nice feature, considering that I am using these in the public from time to time)

    What I have in mind:

  • Shure SRH840 Professional Monitoring Headphones (Black)
  • Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO, 32 ohms
  • Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Professional Studio Monitor Headphones

Price Range: Less than $250, preferably in $150-$200

I noticed that on the DT 770, the 32 ohm and 250 ohm versions are so close in price, yet the 250 ohm version will be substantially more difficult to drive than the 32 ohm. I do not own an amp, but am willing to buy one to power these low end headphones. I do not want to buy a medium end amp for low end headphones though.

I'm back! From a someone else's post and yours combined I found this to be a good bet for headphones:

http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SRH840-Professional-Monitoring-Headphones/dp/B002DP8IEK

Is this any good?

And by musical I mean I play in a bass in an orchestra, not that I'm anything like an audio engineer. I can hear a note and play it back to you on the bass sort of thing.

  • Budget - $300. If necessary, I can go over another $50 or so but I'd like to stay around $300.

  • Source - I'll be using these on the go (in the library at school, on the subway...) so they'll either be plugged into my iPhone or laptop 99% of the time.

  • Requirements for Isolation - I like a lot of isolation. It doesn't need to be absolutely 100% but the closer to it, the better. I'll be using these on the train and at school.

  • Preferred Type of Headphone - Over the ear (I'm pretty sure that's the same as full-sized?)

  • Preferred tonal balance - I like an overall balanced sound. I really enjoy smooth midranges that give a nice warm sound but I wouldn't want that to come at the price of sound quality and clarity. I don't want overpowering bass but I definitely like it to be there.

  • Past headphones - At the moment, B&W P5. They were my first pair of headphones and I loved them for a few years (I've had them for 3+ years now) until I started listening to other quality cans. Now, the soundstage of my B&Ws sounds pretty thin. The balance they give off seems pretty nice to me, though. But that could just be because they were my first pair.

I'm also borrowing my dad's Sony MDR7506s for the next week or so to see how I like them. Immediately, I could tell that they produce a much nicer soundstage than my B&Ws. I'm still trying to get used to the difference in tone but I really like the Sonys. If they were the best within my price range, I would have no problem sticking with them.

  • Preferred Music - I listen to a lot of genres. A lot of rock/folk/bluegrass type of stuff (Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, The Allman Brothers, Phish), a lot of electronic stuff (Ratatat, The Chemical Brothers, Baths), a lot of jazz, and a good amount in between.

  • Headphones I've been looking at - I've been really leaning towards the Sennheiser Momentums (I could've sworn I just saw these for less than $300 on Amazon a few days ago? Am I going crazy?). I was also looking into Shure SRH840s, Beyerdynamic 770s, and just came across reviews for the PSB M4U 1s. I'm open to any opinions and suggestions! Thanks!

These are infinitely better than your beats, and cost half as much. Actually, see if you can sell your beats for this much, and buy these.

Budget: $50-$200 CAD

Location: Ontario, Canada

Source: standard USB port (need more info?)

Isolation: For use at my home desk. Need some cancellation (I live with 3 others); just enough to not annoy them.
Public?: Not at all

Type: Over-ear

Tonal balance: I have very little knowledge about this, but I will be mainly using them for gaming and Skype. I think balanced?

Music: Classic rock, but mainly just games on my PC.

Past headphones: Logitech G430;

Pros: comfortable, mic (not needed), decent sound (not a huge audio expert though), straight wire.

Cons: white noise when silent (I like to wear them whenever I'm at my desk), pretty quiet overall (even at max.), controls on wire in the way.

Improvements: Though I have little knowledge on audio terms or concepts, I want next-to-no white noise (sound & mic) and surround-sound (Virtual? As smooth as possible).

Comfort is a must, since I often game for hours at a time. An attached mic is not necessary (apparently they often suck), but I'd like it to be on the headset (like a separate, attachable one). I'm also used to straight cables; coiled ones just seem too in-the-way (but I may be wrong).

What I've found: (based of Amazon reviews alone) Too lazy to find Amazon.ca ones ATM, hopefully I can ship here.

I'm upgrading from my MDR 7506s and am probably going to buy a pair of [Shure 840s] (https://www.amazon.com/Shure-SRH840-Professional-Monitoring-Headphones/dp/B002DP8IEK) that I found somewhere else for $152. Is there anything better for that price that you'd recommend?

u/TheTechSingularity · 1 pointr/headphones

I had already made a decision to purchase the Sony MDR7506 over several other headphones. However, a recent post about the Shure SRH840 by /u/TheSoundApprentice made me rethink my decision.

Adjusting for price, durability, build, and quality, which pair is better?

u/A_K_o_V_A · 1 pointr/TagProIRL

I know Sennheiser is always pretty legit! I have a pair of these: Here and the quality is so good! The actual headphones are a tad fragile for my liking (The headband has been known to snap but warranty covers the repair.) But the sound quality is really nice.

I don't know about Audio Technica... never heard of them. Reading stuff like this might help.

Requirements for Isolation - Yes, from the research I've done closed-back headphones are good for this?

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? No

Preferred Type of Headphone - Full-sized (circumaural?)

Preferred tonal balance - I think I want some headphones that are more toward the bass side but not too heavy. I play a few shooters (RS2Vietnam, BF1, CSGO, ARMA 3) and I think the music I listen to is on the mid-low side. Sorry if this sounds vague I just discovered this subreddit a few days ago.

Past headphones - Right now i'm rockin some $10 earbuds from Wal-Mart, not sure of the brand but its all-white i'm assuming Apple?

Preferred Music - I will mostly be using this for gaming and watching shows/movies/anime >90% of the time, but for the music I will be listening to, some R&B, Hip hop, lofi hip hop, Deep House, Flume, ODESZA, Chet Faker, Big House EDM, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, Weezer, Tokyo Police Club, Coconut Records

What would you like to improve on from your set-up - Better sound quality and some comfort. I would prefer it if they were compatible with a BoomPro mic, but it is not a requirement.

I did some looking and I came upon these pairs as possible headphones that might be good for what i'm looking for. The first two are what i'm leaning towards and the rest are in no specific order.

Are these headphones appropriate for what i'm looking for? If not may I get a suggestion for what you think would be better? Also, what YouTube channels should I watch for reviews and to learn more about headphones in general? The only one I've watched so far is ZReviews.

For my last question, I am considering buying a soundcard (the Xonar DGX) with these headphones, is it enough to power the DT770 model i'm looking at?

Sorry for the wall of text, I was trying to be as detailed as I could with my limited knowledge. Thank you for reading this and your time!

u/Kerrigore · 1 pointr/firstworldproblems

I own these and am very happy with them. Sennheisers are also really nice, but I use my headphones a lot so I've gone through a pair of those just because of the earpads starting to flake. One of the things that sold me on these Shures is that they come with an extra set of earpads. IMO they are one of the best options at the price point, though there are many others worth considering.

One thing worth knowing is that different headphones are often stronger in different aspects or on different types of music, so it isn't always as simple as one being better or worse. I like really balanced, accurate headphones, but some people want better bass or whatever. So ultimately it comes down to personal preference.

Brands like Bose and Beats by Dre tend to get slammed because they really emphasize the bass, aren't very accurate, and tend to be quite expensive compared to comparable offerings in other brands. But at the end of the day it's about what sounds good to you.

u/Arcadius86 · 1 pointr/gadgets

Shure SRH840. I got these a while ago, and they are FANTASTIC. Very well built, they fold up nicely, the cord is detachable. As for sound, awesome mids is where it shines, but still has good bass and highs. Great deal on amazon as well

u/Angoos · 1 pointr/audiophile

I'll throw in Shure SRH840's. Their sound signature is fairly laid back and they produce very detailed sound across all frequencies. The bass is definitely satisfying without ever detracting from the mids.

edit * While these babies provide great isolation and work fine without an amp, if by "on the go" you're referring to wearing them on the bus and such, I would advise against it because they're pretty huge and look kind of goofy.

u/nothingbut_time · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I would not go with wireless headphones their are quite expensive and you can get better headphone that don"t need to have the battery replaced ever. For your price i would go with these they sound great and have a very flat response (same amount of bass mids and high) and once you find what ear cup setting works for you there are quite comfy if a bit heavy. also because these headphones are not high independence they can be driven by just about anything (my phone a Galaxy S4 can do it no problem their just softer than the ear buds that the phones come with).

u/drconopoima · 1 pointr/ZReviews

Zeos recommends the Sony MDR-1A in his purchase advice guide. Since he takes into consideration what's available at the target price range, then they are definitely a great deal at 120 pounds. But if you are open to a third option, the Shure SRH 840 which are also usually at the $200 price range, you can get them right now off
Amazon UK new from 92 pounds and free shipping within the UK. That's a better deal than the Sony's and a better buy than the M40X in my opinion.

u/echo_nove · 1 pointr/headphones

Those Audio Technicas would be pretty large and don't fold up for portability though.
How about the Logitech UE6000 for $100?
Other alternatives would include the stylish Sony MDR-1R (about $220 at time of writing), heavy but heavy-duty Shure SRH-840 (about $170).
Edit: Hang on, this Sony seems good too.

u/Neurotikitty · 1 pointr/misophonia

When I'm out in public, I use JVC marshmallow ear buds. They are very portable and reasonably cheap. Since they are made of foam, they tend to shape to your ear canal and block out noise pretty effectively.

For non-music ear plugs, I also have Hearos hi fi ear plugs, that tend to help block out more prominent ambient noise, but they don't get rid of everything. They are also great for going to concerts; they lower the volume of the music, but you still hear everything as intended (rather than as muted and muddy, like most foam ear plugs will do).

When I'm at home, I use Shure 840s. Most people in my house don't trigger me, so it's not a big issue there, but those things still have excellent noise isolation, even though they are not active noise-cancelling headphones. I absolutely love them for listening to music.

u/ehzorg · 1 pointr/buildapc

Comfort is such a personal thing, you can't really take one person's word for it. I recommend you head over to the nearest large music supply store and try on as many as you can.

I did the same a few years ago (purchased explicitly for comfort), and ended up walking out with a pair of Shure SR840's.
