I use this one from Amazon.

  • Plugs in: cheaper to install, easy to take with you when you move.

  • Long cord: don't skimp, you'll want to be able to charge from anywhere in your garage or in your driveway, rather than being forced to pull in to reach the charger.

  • Built-in cord management.

  • Attractive design: the entire unit has a glowing backlight, amber when charging, green when fully charged, off when not plugged in.

  • Name brand: Siemens makes some of the best equipment in the world (rail cars, medical equipment, factory machines, etc) and gives a 3-year warranty.

  • UL listed, will meet code wherever you live.

  • 30 amps = 7.2 kW, the max home charging speed for the Bolt.

And if you have Amazon Prime, it can be on your doorstep tomorrow. I had it installed near my breaker box, cost from a licensed electrician was $120.

The gas station is in front of the grocery store. That's the station I use since my grocery-store rewards card gets me a ~$0.30/gal discount.

So if I'm around 1/4 tank or less, then the next time I need to go to the grocery store I pull into the station first. Fill up. Then I park, which takes maybe another minute since it's 100' away.

It's definitely possible. I don't see how it would be possible for daily plugging/unplugging to only take me 10 seconds unless I was literally just throwing the wire/plug on the floor. But here, I can tell you exactly how long it took my wife this morning since I've got a camera on the driveway...

She puts her hand on the plug, unplugs, walks it back to the garage, whips the cable in to clear the garage door when it closes and plugs it on the dummy-plug on the wall next to the EVSE, then walks back to the driver's door. 16 seconds.

She didn't roll the cable. She didn't have to get the wind out of it (to be fair that doesn't really happen with our 3.8kW EVSE she was plugged into, but the 7.2kW EVSE is another story. And that time obviously doesn't include her plugging it in tonight.

I'd have to be literally racing to plug/unplug to do both in 10 seconds, and I'm still not sure it's possible.

Complaining about either is really meaningless. And like I said, I prefer plugging-in. But time-saving? Not IME.

PHEV here. Had a buddy with some electrician experience help me install a 240v outlet in my garage using stuff from Lowes (100$ total), and picked up the lvl 2 charger itself on Amazon (~500$). https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MFVI92S

Totally worth it - I drive 45 miles each way (90 miles round trip) to work, and work long days. using 110, I would only get 90% of a charge sometimes, if I had to stay late to finish a project, or head over to a buddy's house to watch TV.

With the lvl 2 charger, I can get home w/ 1 mile left of charge, plug in, then go inside, change, let the dog out, and then take the wife out to dinner or run errands on battery at a local restaurant.

I park in the garage, but plug in at work using 110 and the included OEM charger. Not ideal when it rains out, but I make sure to set the brick on something that won't let it sit in a puddle.

You've got it. /u/WizrdOfSpeedAndTime got you covered with the earlier comment. Just to provide another option for you, I went with this Siemens Versicharge Unit. <$500 from Amazon. $250 to have a local electrician run a line to the garage for me.

Had it for about 5 years now, and have been pretty happy. I did run in to an issue with the equipment but they stood up, replaced it, very easy.

The 110 charging cable just stays in my trunk and I use if VERY RARELY... but it is nice to have for emergencies.

I got one of these 7 months ago. Price on Amazon fluctuates, they have a warehouse used item for $386. I bought new for $409, seen it go as high as $440 or so. Also saw a Home Depot add for a refurbished unit for $379 recently.

The Siemens unit is 30Amp, some other units are 32A but considerably costlier. The 2A difference is probably just a couple of minutes with a PHEV, it charges my Bolt from 40-90% in 6 hours or less typically.

It is simple but reliable. It is rock solid and should last many years, so a used or refurb unit should be good as new.

Chances of sales on L2 EVSE are probably more likely around Earth Day than the holidays.

My 18 Fusion Energi Titanium was just delivered on Monday. I bought this charger and have been very happy with it.

I like that it has a push button delay that I can select before plugging it into the car. Also, the mounting bracket it comes with lets you mount the charger over the outlet, so the plug isn’t visible. It doesn’t have wifi like some others do, but the car reports its charging status via the MyFord Mobile app. In the 5 days I’ve been using it so far, I’ve had no problems and am very pleased with this charger.

The car only pulls 20 amps from a level 2 charger, but level 2 chargers are supposed to provide 30 amps. Remember, you can't force amps. In other words, as long as your charger can meet the car's needs, it doesn't matter if it can provide 1,000amps. The car will only take what it wants. To that end, I have a Siemens charger. It's rated for outdoor installation, was easy to install, and doesn't have any extras on it... It's pretty bare bones, and it just works.

In your trunk, next to where the 110v charger stows away (lift the floor) there is an electric tire pump. With it, there should be a bottle of green goo that you snap into the pump. That is tire sealant, and it takes the place of a spare tire. It has an expiration date. Replace it when it expires!

Thanks.

Ok, I found this for $430, but it's indoor only, and had only a 14' cord.

This for $499 is indoor/outdoor, but has only a 20' cord.

Unfortunately, neither would meet my needs -- my parking space can barely be reached using my current 23' cord, and I can't practically install a new electrical anything that's any closer.

Funny that a search for "EVSE" didn't find either of these.

BTW, I provided these links using my phone.
