make sure to throw a desiccant or two in there! As a college kid I saved a ton of bottle caps in a glass bottle. They all ended up rusting as they still had some moisture in / on them.

eta: link-fu

Good, someone else pointed this out.

Also, if you really want something to dry out your electronic device that got wet, get some of these.

u/phantom_poo · 12 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

Get some desiccant for your storage. You can save the little bags you find in random retail stuff (food, shoes, etc), or buy them. Here's an ebay guide that should explain use.

u/GothamCountySheriff · 6 pointsr/vinyl

I'm making the assumption that you are going to be deployed long term -- in the neighborhood of a year -- so I think you will want a long term storage solution.

Find a record store in your area and ask them if you can have the shipping boxes that their new records come in. It should be a larger box, with several (5-6) smaller boxes inside. Those smaller boxes hold about 6-10 records each (depending on jacket thickness). Packing in the smaller boxes will help insure that too much stress isn't put on any particular record and help protect them should they need to be moved in your absence. Put your jackets in poly sleeves if they are not already. Pack records into the smaller boxes, and those small boxes back into the big one. Put several silica gel moisture absorbing packets into the box. They will help control excess moisture from the storage environment. Fill any empty void spaces on the sides or top with folded cardboard. Close the box and make sure there isn't any give when pushing on the tops and sides. If there is, use more folded cardboard to make it stable. Use quality packing tape and seal ALL seams with tape, double taping the top and bottom. Wrap the box the box with stretch plastic wrap to repel moisture exposure, insects and pests.

Ideally, the storage environment should be climate controlled. But if you are using a storage locker, be sure to put the boxes of records on a pallet so that they aren't in contact with the ground. This will help guard against moisture absorption, possible flooding and random pests.

I'd be concerned about the moisture trapped in the bag along with the games. Add a couple of silica gel dessicant packs (you know, the little packets that say "do not eat") to each bag and I'd say go for it.

u/taveanator · 4 pointsr/lgv10

A little late now, but silica gel works way better then rice.

And for anyone who does this in the future, don't try to turn the phone on if it's still wet. Yank the batter as fast as you can, that's yet another benefit of having a removable battery!

u/DiDgr8 · 4 pointsr/GalaxyTab

Rice is a bad idea. The fine dust from it gets in and is corrosive over time. Dessicant packs in a ziploc bag are better.

It's probably shot, but the battery will eventually discharge and it'll stop trying to boot. You'll probably need to open it up to stand any real chance to dry it out. A repair shop might be able to resurrect it.

u/NeverPostsJustLurks · 4 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Stalk-sneaking in here, did you bag the jerky while it was still warm?

When the jerky is warm it is still moist and it will cause your jerky to mold very very quickly. I always let my jerky sit for a 15-20 minutes before I bag it.

Also you can buy desiccant food bags (thats just the first one I found on google) and throw them in the ziplock bags before you seal them.

I know you don't want to salt your meat too much, but salt keeps bacteria from growing if needed.

I don't know how picky the customs in the country you're going into is but typically you are not allowed to bring most meats (even packaged and sealed) into the US.

u/gunslinger_006 · 3 pointsr/comicbooks

If you want long term storage and don't mind ease of access being poor, just seal them in Mylar food storage bags.

The mylars are uv resistant and completely air/water tight. I use them to store guns and ammo in my long term storage. Throw a small dessicant pack in and you are good for 30+ years in mylar.

You can seal a mylar bag with a normal clothes iron on your counter top or a 2x4

I use exactly this method and its 100% solid:

The bags are not expensive, you could probably get quite a few books per bag.

But the catch is: Once you cut the bag open to gain access, you will have to reseal (if you have lots of excess) or rebag.

Here are the dessicant packs:

u/Hellfire_Dark_Fire · 3 pointsr/magicTCG

This is what I bought. One fits nicely in a larger deck box. I just keep it behind my extra sleeves.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/guns

Amazon sells them

Also I have a stainless Ruger, do I still need to be worried about corrosion?

u/jhundo · 2 pointsr/guns

Maybe something like this tethered to your yak with a carabiner. and throw a desiccant pack in there to be safe.

u/speedofgravity · 2 pointsr/Nissan

My thought was just that there might be an improper seal that you can't see. I bought aftermarket head lights once where the seal adhesive wasn't applied perfectly. I think someone else said you could try some Silica Gel packs, which are cheap. That might help keep the moisture out. Moisture is hard to get rid of because of condensation and all. A layer of film might build up on the inside of the lens because of the coming and going of the moisture. Well, best of luck I hope your cool new lights work out for you.

u/MonkeyWrench · 2 pointsr/woodworking

Sounds like you need something along these lines

u/SpiderHuman · 2 pointsr/Silverbugs

Amazon.com: MTM SAC Survivor Ammo Can for $17.49 plus Silica Gel Desiccants for $10.99. And maybe a Fiskars Long Handle Digging Shovel for $24.99.

u/HellaNutella · 2 pointsr/climbing

Sorry for your loss, hope your able to salvage some stuff. I was brainstorming ways to avoid this in the future, and found these on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Uline-Silica-Gel-Desiccants-Inches/dp/B003DKQB02/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1332704887&sr=8-3

Anyone tried this before? I wonder what the grams:size of container ratio would be.

u/LeZygo · 2 pointsr/shrooms

Just get something like this and store them. I've read they can lose potentsy after time, so just make sure you use them in a somewhat timely manner. Also, you could put them in capsule form. Which is an easy way to control dosage.

Get this - https://www.vitaminshoppe.com/p/capsule-machine-filler-size-00-1-capsule-machine/cpm1002
Along with https://www.vitaminshoppe.com/p/solaray-empty-gel-caps-00-1000-capsules/so-1006 or this if you're vegetarian https://www.vitaminshoppe.com/p/vcaps-0-empty-250-vegetarian-capsules/n8-1852

Grind them up in a food processor or coffee grinder and fill up the capsules. Start with one pill and see how you feel and proceed to adjust your dosage.

Edit: the 00 pills give you about half a gram per pill.

u/xsoccer92x · 2 pointsr/researchchemicals

Amazon. These are what I use and they function perfectly.

I keep em in this case

Might as well throw in some Silica Gel Packets

u/pat_trick · 2 pointsr/Hawaii

Oh yea. Best bet is to keep everything in an air conditioned environment. If no can, store camera / electronic equipment when not in use in sealed containers with desiccants and change out the packs regularly.

Lived on Kauai, and the moisture there would eat through things in a few months if you weren't careful.

u/Att1cus · 2 pointsr/watercooling

Sounds like PSU to me and that's where I'd start. If the loop leaked for a few days unchecked, the water could have gotten just about anywhere, including your PSU. I'd try putting some silica gel packets in your case for a day or 2 and letting it dry while unplugged. This will at least confirm everything is completely dry before further testing.

Edit: screwed up the link.

u/rosskirk · 2 pointsr/Firearms

I have seen these used and they work quite nicely. Unfortunately due to my truck only being extended cab I can't fit one laying flat behind me.

Edit: silica packets are a good idea too. I can't find a way to use all 50 yet :( not enough ammo!

Excessive humidity could lead to mold growth in the lens and even the body, so if you're going to be leaving it in the trunk for extended periods of time at 100% humidity and 90 degree weather you'd be taking a risk. I always throw one or two of these in with my camera gear to absorb excess moisture. You could use your Ziplock bag idea with one or two of those packets to help combat the moisture. I wouldn't leave your camera out in that kind of weather every day for the whole summer, but for a few days at a time should be safe.

u/SoulGuy60 · 1 pointr/shrooms

Thanks a lot! I have some of those desiccant packs, I keep them in my trunks with clothing packed away etc., to keep moisture away.

Should I put the desiccant pack right in the zip lock with Shrooms OR in the airtight container?

I will probably do them in January at the latest.

Thanks!

This is what I have, but they are 5 Grams: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B003DKQB02/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1511649137&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=dessicant+packs&dpPl=1&dpID=51X6pjAYxpL&ref=plSrch

This would not be a concern at my school; I've seen rooms with $thousands$ worth of guitars, for example, and theft just isn't an issue.

But cameras are small. Get yourself a home safe that will hold your bodies and lenses. (Don't forget to add some desiccant packs!) Keep the safe in your closet and screw it to a wall stud, the floor, or other fixture so it can't easily walk off. If you don't go around saying "I have a box full of expensive cameras in my room!" you should be fine-- most thefts in dorms are crimes of convenience, a guy pocketing an iPod during a party. Nobody is going to come through, break into your closet, pry a safe from the wall, and take it away to bust open.

Also: be sure to get renter's insurance or see if your stuff is covered on your parents' homeowner's policy, so if something does happen you can replace it.

u/ItsOuttaHere13 · 1 pointr/Magic

Same to you! Now i'm just going to add some of [these] (http://www.amazon.com/Silica-Gel-Desiccants-2-1-Inches/dp/B003DKQB02/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1451311644&sr=8-1&keywords=silica+dessicant+packs) so I don't need to keep my packs in plastic bags, and i'll be all set!

u/Ttuggger · 1 pointr/GooglePixel

Try some of those silica gel ball things and see what happens? Cat litter? I'm not sure where you'll get enough to cover the phone though and how to keep the dust out.

https://www.amazon.com/Silica-Gel-Desiccants-2-1-Inches/dp/B003DKQB02

That may be your best bet.

u/playaspec · 1 pointr/techsupportgore

Just a tip for recovering old magnetic media. You should warm the disks 10-20 degrees above ambient for 12-24 hours before putting them in a drive. The iron oxide absorbs moisture, which can cause damage as the heads are dragged over the disks surface.

I learned this while working in a recording studio. We kept a food dehydrator around to 'bake' multitrack reels that had been in storage. Another option is to pack the disks in a bag with silica gel desiccants for a few days before use.

u/PippyPeppers · 1 pointr/guns

eh, I'm in the tri-state area up north. Right now it's 57% humidity; I guess keeping it outside of the case would be better. Thanks for the advice, rust would definitely destroy it.

edit: I found these Dry Packs, they seem pretty good. I might make or buy a display case and put these packs inside.

u/phillipsoft · 1 pointr/climbing

Get a bunch of these

Protip: There are a bunch fo fwee in the bottoms of tool bags in the home depot tool isle. I doubt the construction guys will miss them.

u/Killatommyt · 1 pointr/researchchemicals

I bought these a while back. Silica Gel Desiccants 2-1/4 x 1 1/2 Inches - 25 Silica Gel Packets of 10 Grams Each by Dry-Packs https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003DKQB02/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_8ukIxbS3WQBZG

They are far too large, and I will never need all of them. They do, however, work really well. I use them to store lysergamides In the fridge. Amber black baggy with desiccant packs and another baggy storing the goods. After about four months, No noticeable loss in potency.

I've stored 1p-lsd in a drawer and had noticeable loss in potency.

u/non_consensual · 0 pointsr/guns

My safe gets moisture buildup. I stored a gun in there briefly and it got a bit of rust on it.

Might want to make sure you open it regularly and maybe get some desiccant packets.
