I bet the larger episode count shows will give you the best cost-per-episode.

Slayers is a good one. 78 episodes for $35, that's 45 cents per episode. Although there are times it is cheaper than this.

Oh yeah I recommend Slayers as well and since the re-release you can pic up first 3 seasons for a nice price link to amazon

You could also consider getting him some of his favs on dvd or blu ray. The Slayers series doesn't cost too much (by the season, at least):
