I've tried over 8 cases, and this is my favorite. Many cases look great, but are slippery and would increase the chances of dropping the phone, or having it slip off furniture.

I have and can recommend this case. It's durable, has a good grippy texture on the sides, and covers the bottom of the phone.
I also have and can recommend this glass screen protector.
It's a full edge to edge glass screen protector that covers the notch. The kit it comes with makes it simple to install. Besides the very slightly misaligned ear piece, I honestly can't tell I'm using a screen protector.
According to wirecutter, the silk base grip. It's great, however I got one, and after a couple of months, my phone started popping out on a random corner every couple of days.
I ended up getting a spigen rugged armor and it's awesome, but it's a bit bulkier than the silk.
I also have the leather case, and it's really nice, but I don't think it adds as much protection.
It just occurred to me that you are asking about the XS not the XS Max. I apparently need to pay closer attention. In any case, It’s worth mentioning I have no experience with the XS (only the Max variants) but I posted more details about the two phone cases previously.
