As a heavy sleeper I sympathize. I am essentially not conscious when making the decision to hit the snooze button.

There are also alarms that have an attachment that shakes your bed to wake you up, but I find those can be worse, since beds usually sit on floors, and are made of conductive materials. YMMV

Solution: Get a deaf alarm!

I have the same problem as your fiancée and when I used my phone alarm, it made my roommate go nuts. I use a deaf alarm now and it has improved the situation a lot!

A deaf alarm is basically an alarm clock has a vibrating pod connected to it. You put the pod under your pillow or mattress (depending on how strong you want to feel the vibration under your head). It makes some noise but negligible compared to a normal alarm and it will wake you up in an instant.

The one I use is called Sonic Boom. They have different varieties in case you find the look tacky. You can set the clock such that it only uses the vibrating pod and doesn’t make any alarm sounds.

Your problem seems to be common and has a pretty good technical solution that involves little compromise from both parties. You should def check out the deaf alarm clock. It’s only called that because deaf people can’t use noise/sounds to wake them up.

I'll sleep 12+ hours straight and still sleep through my alarm clock. I'm in my 30s now and I thought I'd grow out of it but it still happens. I've been to multiple doctors to check for sleep apnea. I slept through a fire alarm at college. I have this Sonic Bomb alarm clock that is really fucking loud, as well as a strobe light hooked up to an outlet timer.

It sucks and it's embarrassing when I lived with a roommate, so I just skipped all my morning classes in college so that I wouldn't wake up my roommate every morning. I know I'm not just being lazy, but I guess you just know better than me though.

They make pretty high decibel alarm clocks. I've used a 110 decibel alarm clock in the past when I had trouble waking up, and they should definitely get through ear plugs. It could be a happy medium for you. Ear plugs to let you sleep, loud enough alarm clock to get you through the night. If they complain, you can just be honest in that their noise is to the point where you need ear plugs if you want to get any sleep so you need a louder alarm clock.

Edit: And if you want some revenge along with it, you can go for something Evil or insanity inducing. When they come back in stock anyway.

I'm a college student, and during the year I was an absolute mess. I am also an extremely heavy sleeper, so if I went to bed late, I would almost definitely sleep through my classes. Now I have a 8-4:30 job for the summer which makes things a lot easier. I usually watch TV, do my bedtime routine (brush teeth, wash face, etc.), then go on my phone for a bit until i turn it off around 10:15/10:30. If I really need to get to bed quickly I will take melatonin, but my real secret is this guy. I used the bed shaker for a bit, but now I just put it on the other side of my room. I open my shades the first time I snooze it and sit on my phone until the next time the alarm goes off, which is when I start my morning. It helps that I don't want to wake up the whole rest of my floor since this thing is so loud, so it definitely motivates me to get up quick!

Honestly, ear plugs are going to be your best (and cheapest) solution. You can get 200 pairs for $20.

These ones will block out practically all sound. For me the problem is that they are a bit uncomfortable and they also block out audible alarm clocks.

These are the ones that I settled on. They are perfect because they are low density, so I can't feel them at all when I am wearing them. They block out 90% of noises, but still let my audible alarm clock through.

When I use the first earplugs I linked, I use this alarm clock that vibrates the bed, that way I don't have to worry about hearing the alarm. It also works wonders.

(Note: If you think you can't sleep with earplugs in, please try the green ones. I need everything to be very specific/comfortable or I can't fall asleep, and I don't notice that I'm wearing the green ones at all.)

I definitely hear it, and definitely respond to it. The problem is that it is not 'Awake me' responding to it. I will shut it off, hit that snooze button, etc, without the memories ever actually forming or what I would consider consciousness happening.

If both of these fail to awaken me, this is my own fault, not my partner's. But, if a simple phone call will wake her, why can't she set a phone alarm anyway?

It's not in any way your job to wake her up unless she's paying you to do it. This shouldn't be an issue for the two of you as it is not your responsibility to wake her.

If she literally is unable to wake on her own, as you have stated, then she needs medical attention, not coddling.

My husband also has ADD and is an absolute disaster in the morning. I try not to complain, but it's hard. But, we have some things that have truly helped ease the burden on both of us.


  1. My husband has a terrible time waking up. We bought a Sonic Bomb Alarm Clock with Bed Shaker. This is damn near impossible to sleep through.


  2. Once awake, my husband is so out of it and has NO sense of time and how much time has passed. He kept running late because he would stay in the shower too long, as 20 minutes only felt like 5 to him. We got two shower clocks and put one in the shower and one next to the vanity.


  3. We added a (small entry way mail basket](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06WWRLKHH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_dU3lzbX8FEQW1) with hooks for his wallet and our keys. Make sure they get put there as he enters the home each day.


  4. Plan ahead. My husband takes a mug of iced coffee each morning and his lunch for the day. I make sure to make sure this is ready the night before or as he's in the shower, depending on my own schedule. My husband wears essentially the same thing each day, but if your husband needs to select an outfit daily, do it the night before.


  5. He keeps his medicine in his nightstand (medicine cabinet is not the best idea with guests/ children/ maintenance employees in our apartment.



    Finally, the mess. I don't think there will ever be a perfect answer for this. My husband's thing is he works in IT and ALWAYS thinks he'll need this part/ cord/ software book for a random issue in the future. He also starts many projects and doesn't complete them before moving on to the next thing. It takes a lot of communication to let him know to get this out of the way or I'm throwing it away. It's also really hard at the moment because we moved from a rental house in the suburbs to an apartment in the city and we just don't have enough room for everything. If you figure this out, I'd love to know your secret.

I recently moved into my college dorm and I always had trouble with alarm clocks. I would have to have them go off for thirty minutes to wake me up. Now I use this one without sound, only the vibration, and it wakes me up every time. It's a vibrating sphere under your mattress that goes off when your alarm goes off. You can of course use the very loud (adjustable) alarm as well, but I decided not to torture my roommate.

I have the same problem. I've turned off and physically broken alarm clocks while asleep, had conversations about how "no, I'm totally awake and getting up," for half an hour straight, etc. My unconscious self will do or say anything to stay asleep.

I've had some luck with the "sonic bomb" alarm clock. Super friggin' loud, flashy lights, and a bed-shaker.

It hasn't been a perfect solution, but it's much better than any other alarm I've used. The bed-shaker is a surprisingly gentle way to wake up considering it's like having a vibrator under your pillow. I tend to actually be somewhat cognizant when waking up to it unlike traditional alarms. The flashy lights are pretty effective too when I'm not wearing a sleep mask, and the alarm is loud enough to cause hearing damage if you set it to full blast.

Also the alarm off buttons are pretty small while the snooze button is huge, so when I do unconsciously lash out at it I tend to hit snooze rather than turning it off completely.

I'm still a bit groggy getting up, but I do actually get up now... most of the time.

My narcolepsy is BAD. Phones don't wake me up. At all. Light doesn't wake me up either. But I've found one thing that has worked a few years ago.. it's an alarm clock called the Sonic Bomb and its ridiculously loud and has a bed shaker that you put underneath your mattress. I place the actual alarm clock far away enough from my bed that I have to get up to turn it off.

I work from 7 to 7, so I'm exhausted by the end of the day. I've noticed that if I go on a bike ride or have an especially exhausting work day, I sleep better and wake up more refreshed. Try incorporating some exercise into your day, it helps! The biggest piece of advice I have for you though is to establish a sleep pattern. make sure you get to sleep around the same time and wake up around the same time every night and day. This has helped IMMENSELY.

Form habits. Try to start winding down at around the same hour every night, try to wake up around the same hour every day. I've even come up with a ritual for waking up for work. I set my alarm to wake me up an hour before work. I will allow myself to hit the snooze button three times, and I've figured out the timing so that if I end up hitting the snooze button that many times, my phone alarm also goes off with the bed alarm to warn me that "ITS TIME TO GET UP NOW OR YOU'RE GOING TO BE LATE." I basically have the stupidly loud alarm there to wake me up again, and then while I'm awake, the phone alarm is there to say "HOLY SHIT, YOU NEED TO GO."

I've found that waking up over an extended period of time is a big factor for me. This is important, especially if you take stimulants. When my alarm first goes off in the morning, I have to get up to turn it off, and while I'm up, I take my vyvance that I've set next to the alarm clock. Then, while I snooze a bit longer, the vyvance is able to start working, so by the time I need to actually get up, I've got some energy. There's lots of little tricks that you'll have to learn and everyone is different - these are mine. Hope that's helped a little! Good luck

  1. Set up multiple alarms with 5-10 minute gaps, also make sure your phones volume is at the max

  2. If you have the money buy this alarm on Amazon. It's loud and also it has a thing the size of a hockey puck that you can put under your pillow that vibrates. Your body can't really ignore your pillow/head vibrating so it works every time, at least in my experience.

It was AMAZING!!! Super loud and the vibration was super strong. Its like a flat egg thing that goes under your mattress, when the (really loud) alarm goes off, so does the vibration. I preferred mine under my pillows so the alarm was that much more jarring.

I retrained my body on how to sleep, and haven’t had to use an alarm for two years, but I still vividly remember rushing to leave for so many mornings because I slept so much.

My room mate had one of these. He would let that thing go off over and over, just hitting snooze until he eventually turned it off and went back to sleep (he skipped half of his classes). Or he would hit snooze, and leave the apartment before it went off again and I had to get ass up and turned it off myself. Also, there was only a very thin wall that our beds were pressed up against, so I heard it loud and clear, even with earplugs.

I use this. Gentle and small alarms like the one above doesn't do anything for me. But this is really strong with two variable intensity on vibration and sounds. It also allows you to have it super loud if you're able to hear that but I don't use that function. It comes with flashing lights too.

Yo, try the Sonic Boom alarm clock. It's loud as fuck and has a little puck thing you put under your pillow and it'll rattle your brains around until you wake up.

I sleep like the dead, and can 'wake up' for like 10 minutes and go back to sleep and not even remember it. No alarms were working, I was setting 5-10 alarms daily to try to get my ass up. (And yes, I tried scaling back alarm count with no positive effect, since some people claimed one alarm is better as there's no fallback)

Got this noisy boi and it works pretty well. Still times where I'd zombify and snooze it, but it was the most effective alarm clock I'd tried. At this point my internal clock gets me up on time most days, but it took the nuclear option to even get into that rhythm. If nothing else, it'll piss off your neighbours enough that they'll break down your door and wake you up if the clock fails.

My brother is like you and when we lived together I would have to listen to his alarms go off for hours. It was awful. Short of me going into his room, turning on his lights and stealing his pillows/covers, nothing got him up except for the fear that my dad would kick his ass for being late to school.

So I bought him an alarm clock like this. It has a thing you put under your pillow that shakes you awake. This thing worked.

If that doesn’t sound like your thing, there are other alarm clocks designed to force you to get out of bed.

There are options. Stop being a rude neighbor.

If you move the clock away from your bed so you can't just snooze it...it should help. No way you are sleeping through it.

This will quite likely become extremely buried, but it sounds like you might need the alarm clock my fiance used to have. It was this "sonic bomb" alarm clock or something. The beeps could be as loud as a jackhammer, and it came with something you stick under the mattress that also shakes your bed. Never failed to wake him!

Talked to him today. I'm basically fired.

Official policy states that 3 write-ups is automatic termination. I got a write-up the first week by forgetting to submit my timecard. The next two were because I slept through my alarm and either missed or arrived late to my Monday morning shift, two weeks in a row. I literally bought the loudest alarm I could find on amazon, and I'll sleep straight through it (as well as my phone alarm), sometimes for hours.

He knows that I'm good at my job. All the feedback I've received from students has been overwhelmingly positive, and I genuinely love what I do. Unfortunately, the higher-ups only see the write-ups and they're not happy. He actually put his reputation on the line by defending me after the third offense, and then I screwed up a fourth time by not noticing my name on the schedule since it was a different color than the other shifts.

I don't know what to do right now. I'm in an insane amount of debt from student loans, and my GPA is under 2.5, so unless I can find an internships that'll accept me, I basically have nothing of value on my resume. This job is my only source of income besides the bare minimum I need to survive coming from loans. I'm starting to regret ever going to university in the first place, but it's too late to give up.

It absolutely does NOT wake him up. However, it DOES make it much easier for ME to wake him up when it's time. Normally it's really really difficult to wake him, but if the light has been going for a bit (it starts dim and gradually goes to full brightness over about twenty minutes) he stays asleep but is more ready to wake.

It only kind of works too. Yeah, the full sunlight, bed shaking (even pillow shaking if I put it under his pillow isn't enough), siren blaring, wake-everyone-in-a-half-mile-radius isn't QUITE enough to wake him every time.

But both are helpful. I would try those PLUS an old school windup clanger alarm that you have to get out of bed to turn off.

Or get serious about the hours change. My husband is the same way and there is just no way his is getting up early. When we were younger I thought he just needed to grow up already. Now ... I think it's just not physiologically a possibility. Fortunately he can work some flexible hours - nobody tech likes to be early! - and doesn't sleep QUITE as soundly as he used to. But he sleeps like a rock. Kid inherited it. Fighting nature is REALLY hard there. I hope kid can get a job where it isn't dependent on him being there early, because he'll be in your shoes then.

One standard alarm clock set at the time I should wake up. Very easy to snooze.

Another alarm set on my phone for the time I absolutely have to wake up to not be late for work. Impossible to stop snoozing without solving a math problem.

It immediately floods your body with adrenaline and initiates your flight response. Don't use around loved ones.

I struggled a lot with this too. I tried putting my cell phone far away from me when I went to sleep so I would have to get up to turn it off; I tried the alarm apps with the crazy captchas that made me do math before it would turn off (I would just sleepily wind up removing the battery, and eventually got good at drowsy math)... I even tried the crazy-loud alarm clocks made for deaf people..... Nothing worked.

I would up taking a shotgun approach to this as well.

I started off with some very cool looking blue-blocking glasses that I would religiously start wearing once it was sundown, and wouldn't take off until I went to bed. I would take some melatonin at the same time as well.

Now, the real pièce de résistance was a sunlamp--of which there are many kinds that I used alongside the Sleep as Android phone app. There's a specific captcha on there called "Let there be light" that forces you to turn on a lamp before the alarm will turn off. By adjusting the sensitivity I made it so that only the INCREDIBLY BRIGHT sun lamp would turn it off, which combined with the sun lamp finally did the trick. By the time the alarm had turned off, I really did start feeling invigorated by the bright light.

Don't feel like you need to jump in to the deep end and wake up at 6:30 right away. Set realistic goals, and once you establish a rhythm you can adjust times based on your schedule.

If I REALLY need to get up in the morning I use an app called alarmy that goes off like 5 minutes after my first alarm and it makes you go take a picture of something in your house to turn it off.

I'm right now taking 15mg of zenzedi twice a day and when I go to sleep, my brain will still be 99% in the mood to go for a run even though I know that I'm tired. Without either 50mg of benadryl or the max dose of melatonin, I'll get maybe an hour of sleep. With the sleep aids I usually sleep for 7-8 hours.

I recommend buying the sonic boom alarm clock if you have a hard time getting out of bed. The clock is made for deaf or hard of hearing people so when it goes off in the mornings it makes my heart rate spike to 120 and freaks me out.

I've found that an alarm with a bed shaker, like this one, works really well for me. I have an issue where sometimes I can have a full conversation while still asleep, but for some reason, the physical movement of the bed shaker is different enough to wake me up. I might need to try something different eventually if I get used to it, but so far, I'm just using it when I need to wake up earlier than usual, and it's working pretty well.

Now, I have 2 recommendations for alarms, but neither is very similar to yours.

If you like phone alarms, I highly recommend [alarmy](Alarmy - Alarm clock by Delight Room Co., Ltd.https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/alarmy-alarm-clock/id1163786766?mt=8) (iPhone link, but I’m pretty sure it’s also available for Android). It has a feature that requires you to take a picture, and then recreate the same picture to turn the alarm off. I use this every morning. It’s the only alarm that has worked for me consistently.

If you’re set on a physical alarm, my go to is the sonic bomb. The display doesn’t turn off, but other than that it’s amazing. It has a pad that you can put under your pillow or mattress that vibrates to wake you up. It has different levels of intensity (like less intense for under your pillow, or really intense for under the mattress or if you’re harder to wake up). This is key for not waking up light sleeping bed partners because it’s a separate function from the auditory alarm. It’s also really easy to turn off if needed.

I have this exact same problem. So as of right now the way that I barley wake up is... I have one crap alarm clock that I would toss in a heartbeat but its noise so whatever. I have another alarm clock called the sonic boom (you can get it on amazon). It has a vibrating piece that you can put under your mattress but it didn't do a ton so i put it under my pillow. The problem with that was I would angrily smash my alarm clock and wake up with an instant headache lol. So i put both alarm clocks across my room on the dresser and I leave that vibrating piece on my wood floors for the loudest most obnoxious noise you'll ever hear. I was getting out of bed and turning them off, not conscious enough to make the right decision so the last thing I added has been a life saver. Go to the app store on your phone and download Alarmy. You can set it to do math problems to turn off the alarm. I currently have to do 12 math problems to wake up. It's like 98 + 67, nothing too complicated but enough to make you never want to fall back asleep lol. Also the other thing I am going to get next is a wake up light that mimics natural sunlight. So say you set your alarm for 0430 like I do, at 0415 it gradually gets brighter until its brightest setting at 0430.

I'll start by saying there are 1,000,000 ways to do this. This was the way I did it based on what I know and while it works for me I am sure it could be improved upon by much smarter folks! I am always open to constructive criticism and feedback.

Anyways, I paired it with the bed shaker from an alarm clock like this: https://www.amazon.com/Sonic-Alert-SBB500SS-Alarm-Shaker/dp/B000OOWZUK. I had the alarm clock and bed shaker that I bought after going deaf because I always slept on my hearing side and couldn't hear the normal alarm. Thankfully I am past that now.

I also have a 12 volt power supply that powers everything and an audio cable that runs to the computer. It is all slapped together in a project box.

Basically, I split the headphone out on my PC to my headphones and this system. I set the circuit board to pickup the audio from the side that I am deaf on (right side) and adjust the sensitivity setting so that it activates the bed shaker at the right threshold based on what I am doing. The tuning of getting headphone volume loud enough (and not too loud) and getting the bed shaker to actually provide helpful feedback takes some time. I put the shaker under the rug that my feet are on while I play. I get a helpful shake when something is going on on my right side. This is enough for me to know to spin that way or watch my Sonic Radar. I don't think I've been run over (from my deaf side) since I started using this.

My next step is to put this thing on its own headphone amplifier with volume control so I can control it with more granularity and separately from the headphones.

Also, and in general, make sure you enable the loudness equalization in Windows: http://lifehacker.com/5986236/normalize-the-sound-volume-on-your-pc-with-windows-loudness-equalization-setting. This will boost the more quite things like footsteps so that the shaker can pick them up.

Finally, between this setup and Sonic Radar I only feel mildly handicapped. It was fun to put together because I like the "maker" aspect and it helps "solve" a problem.

I have a foolproof method to make getting up early easier. I set my alarm for 30 minutes before I have to be up. When I hear that alarm, I take the caffeine pill on my nightstand and go right back to sleep. The caffeine kicks in then I'm wide awake.

I've had one of those for years and it is awesome, mostly because my alarm wouldn't bother people in other rooms. After knocking it off my night stand almost a hundred times I broke the switch that let me turn on the bed shaker, so now I just use it as an audible alarm clock.

In the last couple years, my phone alarm has stopped waking me up. I used to use my phone alarm for everything and never had a problem, until one day I just started sleeping through it every time. I tried a lot of different things like the sleepyti.me website to help me wake up to natural rhythms, alarms with puzzles and such (which didn't work since I wouldn't wake up to the alarm to even solve the puzzle), but the thing that worked best for me is this bad boy.

It is so loud and unsettling, I wake up instantly to it. It shakes the bed on top of unleashing the most horrible screech I've ever heard. It's so loud, that I can hear it going off from my 3rd story apartment with the windows closed when I'm standing outside my building. I'm sure my neighbors loathe me for it, but it helped me start getting to work on time and keep my job.

Any maximum strength sleeping pill at 9:30 (maybe 2). I like audio books. Don't get anything with a big plot line. I like non-fiction. Put the book on for 30 minutes. (If MMJ is legal where you are, I totally recommend that instead.) I also suggest a humidifier. Get one without a filter and use bottled water.

As for waking up. Timy Alarm Clock. You have to solve problems. I would also get a loud alarm clock.



Edited to say,eat a good breakfast with protein. Have a bold good coffee. Eat a good lunch but not too heavy. You need protein. Have an afternoon snack. Keep an energy drink or iced coffee around for emergencies. If you nap after work, keep it to 20 minutes.

You can use the disc under your mattress as recommended, which will shake your whole bed. I prefer to put the clock across the room. I get out of bed IMMEDIATELY because I feel bad that the whole building can hear my alarm.

Second: You need to retrain your sleep pattern, and you need to practice waking up. If you are needing that much help waking up you are not getting enough sleep.

Circadian:

Your circadian rythm is set by blue light and food intake (also partly by temperature and physical activity); to keep it intact it's wise to keep a 6-8 (preferably 8) hour dark period (with only red light allowed, see !darkperiod) coinciding with an 8-12 hour fasting period. Both the dark period and the fasting should start 2h prior to the core. Not doing so has a major influence on your core's sleep quality, and leads to elevated risks of getting diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
If your core doesn't start 20-24 it is wise to have the dark period be slightly cooler than the rest of the day. In this case getting a daylight lamp to use outside of the dark period is also recommended.
Also try to limit physical activities during the dark period.

Darkperiod:

Melatonin is essential for entering SWS, however it's production is delayed by all light types except red. Because of this all non-red light types should be completly blocked off during the dark period, which should start 2h prior to the core (first core on DC schedules, night core on Triphasic) and continue for 6-8h (preferably 8h) after that. The reason it should continue even after your wake time (if you have a short core) is to ensure the stability of the circadian rhythm. Darkness is stil prefered over red light, so using night themes is the best option. The light blocking can be done by either wearing blue-green light blocking glasses or by using programs such as F.lux, sunsetscreen etc on a low kelvin setting (around 1000K). Having red lightbulbs is also an option.

Schedule line specifics
DC: if your cores are within 5h from eachother the dark period should cover the whole core gap.
E: if the first nap is relativly close to the core you should have the dark period extended until the end of it.
Triphasic: the gap between the night and dawn cores should be covered in the dark period

Nap-eat:

Eat a regular meal around 2-3h before a nap (digestion before sleep), or after a nap. Some light snacks are ok within 1-2h before nap.

I use one of these. It has a flashing light (not the most powerful, so don't rely on it alone), a bed vibrator and an incredibly loud alarm (up to around 113 dB, if I remember correctly). I've not completely lost my hearing yet, but I've had to transition to it from a phone alarm and it never fails to wake me up. I know my partner says it could wake the dead.

I am exactly the same. In medical school I slept through 2 alarm clocks and missed one of my exams, thankfully they let me retake the exam (I'm a doctor now haha).

The solution to this was an alarm that also vibrated.

I, too, am deaf (my hearing loss is also nerve-based, go figure). Wrist-based alarm clocks like this bug the heck out of me, though! I use this alarm clock, set just to vibrate (the actual alarm does nothing for me, heh). I have the vibrating "puck" under my mattress so that it's positioned directly underneath my upper torso. NO sleeping through that sucker when it goes off!

I'm impressed. And curious, is your doctor a sleep specialist? Typically, in cases of sleep apnea, a person is not getting into "rested" sleep (REM). Therefore, despite the quantity, there is no quality of sleep. You should see a sleep specialist if you haven't. In some capacity, you do need to find the source, and it could be a simple fix. There is a lot of misinformation about sleep apnea, and sleeping in general.

If you've tried those two methods, then i'm not sure how much I can help. During school, I have been able to develop a ritual of having the sun wake me up. I consistently, every day woke up without an alarm clock at 6:30, with the windows from my home (albeit, we have skylights). Just know, in this case, that lack of sun builds melatonin (for sleep), and sun has something else (forgot) that will naturally wake you up

Unfortunately, alarms are naturally conducive to a poor wake up; so i'm not the biggest fan of them for myself. When I wake my kids up, I open the curtains, which usually causes them to turn, turn off the sound machine, and then hit the lights. It's usually enough to get them up. Note that two of my kids are heavy sleepers, and could pass a storm in their sleep.
If the sleep doctor doesn't work, and the most powerful alarms, and you cannot find anything to help, if it is related to sleep apnea, then your hubby may be your best bet.

Probably it won't be that much of a help to you, but I also struggled with this problem.

What helps is memorizing the reason of why you have to stand up at a certain time before you fall asleep. That means don't fall asleep while looking TV or browsing the interwebz but try to think of important things you have to do the next day or things you look forward to. This also helps falling asleep.

I admit it only truly works when the things are of importance to me.

Also consider buying the Sonic Bomb alarm clock which will send you flying out of bed. ;-)

I own this, it works great.

I have the hardest time waking up, I can sleep through all standard alarm clocks. I used to own one of these http://amzn.com/B000OOWZUK but it almost gives me a heart attack every morning and I could easily just turn it off and go right back to sleep.

With the phillips alarm clock it slowly turns on over a 30 minute period which is kind of like the sun rising. Usually I find that I wake up before its fully on, and if for whatever reason the light part fails to wake me up it plays music once the light is all the way on.
