This was a point in an 'audiophile' debate a little while back... Some people honestly can't hear a difference between sound that's quality A and sound that's quality B. There are others who like to nitpick and go with one setup over another, because they claim they can hear a massive difference. Some people can hear that difference. I know with some songs, they get a "swimmy" sound if they're not ripped properly, or if the CD player's starting to go. I don't hear differences in quality, unless there's something wrong with the sound.

The 1saleaday headphones have a strange stereo separation with really weak drivers (or whatever they are) that makes everything sound like it was recorded on a handycam and is being played back from behind you through a parabolic speaker made out of a Best Value coffee can.

I'm used to my $5 Sony MDR-Q22 headphones. They're kinda bassy, seem pretty flat, and don't rattle under heavy load (DnB tracks). I'm absolutely certain there are hordes of people who'd say that would tell me I'm listening to absolute shit.

TL;DR -- To each his/her own.

REQ FOR CLIP-ONS (ON-EAR), NOT CANS OR EARBUDS

I provide a link to the Amazon product page below, but I had a set of these things for years. Bought another set when that one broke, but by the time THOSE broke, the product was discontinued and is now prohibitively expensive for such a simple thing.

I have a proper set of AT cans for home use and such, but these old Sony models were perfect for workouts. The trick was a spring in the ear hook that made it pull into the ear a bit. I've tried a few other models, but the pad hangs loose, and usually not flush with the ear as a result, lowering sound quality. The spring would also make sure it wouldn't fall off the ear while running or moving around, which (again) perfect for working out.

I hate earbuds and cans are too bulky for the gym. Anyone have a recommendation? Would mostly play bass-heavy gym music: hip hop / metal / dance stuff. More important than quality is a good, solid, comfortable fit.

I hate those more! I feel like I can hear every movement of the cord inside my ear!

I use these instead

I'm looking for something to replace my beloved Sony MDRQ22LP which have died on me at long last. I can't wear earbuds and most other designs are too bulky for my usual use cases, so I'm looking for clip-ons of the same comfort level as these.

Budget: $60 at most (preferably lower -- I'm fine with cheap headphones that I have to replace every now and then if they're comfortable)

Source: Phone, iPad

Isolation: Some -- I wear headphones in public but need to have some awareness of what's around me

Preferred tonal balance: Don't care.

Preferred type: Clip-on

Preferred music: Video game soundtracks, post-rock, instrumental

I love these clip ons. I don't like the fit of buds, even the ones with ear clips. these are great because they clip on firmly, but you can still hear the outside noises.

Budget - Around $100-$150 range.
Source - My laptop, and I'm going to get an RCA-to-headphone adapter and use them for console games at night, too.
Isolation - I'm kind of undecided, here. Other people hearing my music won't be a problem. The problem is that, on one hand I have misophonia, while on the other hand, I do like to be aware of my surroundings. So blocking outside interference is both a blessing and a curse.
Preferred Type of Headphone - Full-sized, don't really know if I want open or closed.
Preferred Tonal Balance - I don't know. I have no idea what I'm doing.
Past Headphones - Sony MDRQ22LP ear clip headphones
Preferred Music - I listen to a wide range of music, but I do tend towards metal/rock, with some pop and the occasional hip-hop or country in there, if the mood takes me.
Location - U.S.

I'll try not to ramble, too much.

A major concern of mine is comfort. I love my Sony ear-clips, because they fit comfortably over my ears, they're light, and there's no headband to deal with. The only real problem I have with them is that they tend to collect hair inside, which causes a buzzing vibration when certain sounds play that can only be rectified by digging every last piece out with tweezers and compressed air.

So my story is that my dad got me some Beats Solo HDs for Christmas. Which I do kind of like, in the sense that just putting them on without plugging them into anything and quieting the world a little is very relaxing. The sound quality is nicer than what I have already, though I don't like the balance. And I hate the headband. I don't know if it's the pad on it or the weight or both or what, but it presses into my head and hurts. I've tried folding a sock in half and putting it between the headband and my head, which does help, but I can still feel pressure through it. Also... the sock itches :I

My ears feel a little pressurized inside too, like when you change elevation, but I could possibly get used to that over time.

I can't return them, but I could probably sell them on eBay for around $100. And I could spend that plus maybe a little extra out of pocket on a new pair. Mobility isn't a huge issue here, as I'll just use my old Sonys for travel. In fact, I would just continue using them and spend the hundred on whatever else, but I'd like to connect some headphones to my video games' RCA cables so that I can hear them better at night without waking the house. And I might want some higher quality sound for that. And then I'll naturally wind up using them for music / let's plays / laptop games, as well.

So that's about where I'm at. Worse comes to worse, I can always just sell the Beats, continue using my old headphones, and get something else with the cash. But I'm weighing my options, right now.
