No problem! A few things to keep in mind:

  • Video and Audio programs can be a bit hard to learn at first because they seem very scary. There's a whole bunch of features and tools to use that you don't know what any of them do and they all have obscure names. Once you figure a few of them out it gets way easier and you'll breeze through it. so if it looks hard now, keep that in mind :D

  • Most video editing software works in a similar way. You get layers of videos and the top layer will print over the bottom layer. Therefore if you put some text on the top layer it will print over the video. If you put the video on the top layer and the text below it then you won;t see the text. Windows Movie Maker does not have this capability, and is the reason why people switch away from it pretty quickly. If you can afford it, something like Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12 is a great probram to use to do video editing and is only $34.

  • This will take a lot of practice and research. As you make more videos you will learn about video editing more and your videos will gradually improve. Don't fret if you don't get it now, just keep producing content and you will slowly learn to use your program. YouTube is a long game. if you think you will jump into it and be amazing right off the bat then you are gonna have a bad time :d Take it slow :D

Hope this helps! If you have any specific questions (about features, process, why I did something, etc) please feel free to let me know! :D

Premiere is king, but it is a bit expensive, unless you pay monthly. I mean, over time it gets expensive, but IMO it's the best suite you can get for video editing.

Cost is important, especially for just getting started. No one wants to drop big money on something they don't have experience with. On my personal youtube channel I edit all my videos with Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12. There is a new one out there, but you can get the Movie Studio for like $30 on Amazon.

There are free ones out there as well that aren't half bad, but nothing compares to paid ones like Premiere, Vegas Video, Final Cut, Movie Stuido, etc.

Edit: As a matter of fact, here is the version I use for $32: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Movie-Studio-Platinum-Suite/dp/B008MIMIY8/ref=sr_1_2?s=software&ie=UTF8&qid=1412179175&sr=1-2&keywords=sony+premium+software

Cheaper(that's the first time I've seen it as high as 60 bucks) and you more than likely will not use the features introduced into SMS 13 that 12 doesn't have.

It's essentially Sony Vegas(so you can use Vegas tutorials) that just doesn't have the high-end professional features.

Sorry. I understand. I open the GH3's .MOV (QT wrapped h.264) files in [Sony Vegas Platinum 12] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008MIMIY8/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B008MIMIY8&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20).

It opens the files seamlessly, with no transcoding and no stuttering on playback.

It even opens ProRes .MOV files from my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera with no problems.

When I try to edit AVCHD .MTS files, however, playback is choppy - and it sometimes crashes the machine. As I said, I avoid AVCHD whenever possible.

My machine is an old [Gateway NV53A82U AMD Phenom II Dual-Core N660 3.0GHz, 4GB DDR3, 320GB HDD, DVDRW, ATI Radeon HD 4250, 15.6" Display, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (Blue)] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005NXAFAE/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B005NXAFAE&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) I bought off Amazon 2 and a half years ago.

Cheers,

Bill

We use Sony Movie Studio Platinum Suite 12, and it does the job well. I think it's the "lite" version of Sony Vegas, though it sounds like the effects and stuff that we're missing out on are way more advanced that anything we actually need. It always seems to be on a good sale on Amazon too.

Would you say that Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12 ($33 shipped) is adequate for someone starting out? Or is it a 'go big or go home' kind of situation?
