It's a nice camera but I think that for the same price as it you could probably buy another mirrorless camera with a more modern sensor and perhaps better features.

The 5N on amazon at least goes for around $200 used... http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Compact-Interchangeable-Touchscreen-18-55mm/dp/B005IHAIHA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1450186396&sr=8-2&keywords=nex+5

A bit more gets you an Olympus EPL5 which has the same sensor as the OM-D E-M5 which was voted in various places as the camera of the year. It was the user-voted camera of the year on dpreview.com and for a fraction of its cost you get the same image quality.

If you want a cheap, compact used mirrorless camera the Olympus EPL5 is one of the best offers on the market today IMO.

If you want a more compact lens than the one that comes with that camera, that camera system has one of the best and sharpest lenses you can get and it's fairly affordable if you buy one used: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Panasonic-Lumix-20mm-F-1-7-Aspherical-AF-G-Lens-/181961117843?hash=item2a5dba5093:g:AAcAAOSwfZ1WbiQ2

That camera and lens combined are less than a third of what I paid for the exact same image quality three years ago.

On a second note, if you intend on following that camera purchase with upgrades later down the line, perhaps buy better lenses as well... well the APS-C lenses of Sony's system as not as high of a priority for Sony right now since they're busy trying to fill the holes that their full-frame A7 lens lineup has and my guess would be that Sony will be focusing much less on that system as time goes on, whereas Olympus, Panasonic and other companies continue to grow their lens lineup.

Here's Sony's rumored lens lineup for Full-frame lenses: http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr3-sony-to-announce-a-new-update-fe-lens-roadmap-soon/
TLDR of that link: 6 lenses.

Here's their rumored lineup for APS-C lenses: http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr2-possible-e-mount-aps-c-lens-roadmap-for-2015/
TLDR of that link: 3 lenses.

Whereas M4/3 cameras have more or less consistently seen 6 first-party lenses being released each year, sometimes one more or less and isn't showing any signs of slowing down. In fact, next year a lot of exciting lenses are all-but confirmed: http://www.43rumors.com/ft5-confirmed-via-multiple-sources-many-f1-2-mft-lenses-from-olympus/

I am leaving to go to Zambia for the Peace Corps in February and have narrowed my camera choices down to 3. Any suggestions or pros/cons for each camera would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think you understand what I am saying at all. Never did I say that "I pay more, therefore you give me bigger camera!", I said for the quality of picture and the size of the camera, you can get a entry level dslr that has better specs that produces a better image.

Now, if portability is the main feature, why the hell would s/he pick up one of the bigger m4/3s camera when there are smaller more affordable alternatives that give a quality image that is very comparable to the OMD.

And I don't know why you keep going on about weather sealing like a drop of liquid ruins cameras. I have taken the 5n out in the rain many times with an umbrella and it has been great.

For price perspective, Sony NEX 5n is around 700$ while the OMD is around $1300.

It is pretty clear that when it comes down to it, it is about the picture the camera (and the photographer) takes. Paying the extra 600 dollars is not worth it to me and I thought it might not be to the op. If it is, then I really don't care because you're right, the OMD is a great camera. However, just because I suggest a different camera, doesn't mean it is the wrong choice.

> The 2010s will be known for their 0.2MP selfies or 2MP blurred photos, with instagram or Snapchat filters. Or you have a 1000$ canon because you're rich and your photos are artsy.

Ok this is some disinformation I need to immediately squash. I bought a Canon Rebel XTi in like 2007 with a lens for like $700. Even today you can get old APS-C size sensor cameras for extremely cheap. Some examples
