How about The Parasol Protectorate series by Gail Carriger? It's a mix of steam punk and paranormal romance and is also pretty funny. The first book is called Soulless. I'm on my phone and am not sure how to do a link yet so I'll just paste it and hope for the best. Edit: Ooo it worked. And I just noticed you wanted a stand alone. These are really quick reads and aren't very long so they might work for you.

Sorry...got carried away. I read a lot and couldn't pick just one to recommend. What are some of your favorite books?
haha I do the same thing! I'm actually overdue for reading the Merry series again.
My friend and I have actually resorted to comparing people we are dating to people in Anita's harem. I'm looking for a Micah, Richard (in early books), Jean-Claude hybrid. It's basically impossible.
If you haven't already, you should check out The Parasol Protectorate series. Her writing is very similar to LKH and the characters are just as fun. It's like a steampunk version of Anita Blake in a way (which is amazing considering how much I love steampunk).
>The story involves magic and the mages being hunted.
sounds similar to the parasol protectorate, a series of magic-vs-steampunky types.
Read a bunch, figure out what works for you, ask specific questions about what you're looking for (see corrupt reverend's query).
If you'd like to mix some more advanced tech with steampunk-y themes, google dieselpunk.
I want someone who fights with an umbrella and can steal magic!
we should be friends, I haven't met anyone else who has read that book
